And just like that, it's 2024! And that means we get to do some predictions for Sony and the PlayStation business. This should be an exciting year for PS5 with pressure continually mounting on the company to start making moves. We should be expecting big reveals from PS Studios, new PS5 Pro hardware, PS Plus updates, a new SIE President & CEO, and some spicy acquisitions. So here's what I think is gonna go down. And don't worry, I didn't forget my report card from last year. Looks like I'm going to Summer School with these marks. Ugghhhh. kicks dirt

We were extremely lucky during the ps3 era, we used to get trilogies of sony’s main IPs. The Resistance and Killzone trilogies, Infamous 1&2 + Festival of Blood, 4 main entries of Ratchet & Clank, the Uncharted Trilogy.

Not having PSVR2 in stores for a while really hurt it. People that aren't in the know about playstation do not know/are not willing to use ps direct.

But yeah they do need to sell these things in regular stores, I don't get why they don't... Are they making that much profit by selling them themselves??? I wonder if they'd sell them for 550 to stores who'd distribute them for around 600 like on ps direct, and if that'd hurt the PSVR2 production, because I can hardly believe that either so I don't get why they don't sell them in regular stores...

A lot of people that like games have heard about the VR2 but are too lazy to look up what it's all about, or have heard VR overal is bad from the early adopters of early headsets like PSVR1 and don't want to try. But man PSVR2 is so good it's a game changer, it's just that the headset for me needed some counterweights on the back to prevent the headset from slipping down at the front. I love the PS4 Pro like graphics, it's obvious you won't get the same quality as full screen games but the quality has improved so damn much from the PSVR1 it's worth the buy this time imo, and couldn't say that for PSVR1

Definitely feels like the first wave of releases has all come out, without a further wave of announcement, which is killing the momentum. Hopefully they're just cautious with announcements instead of being at risk of a dry spell, 2024 is looking like the quietest year yet for first party, especially their flagship singleplayer experiences.

Surprised Ryan didn't mention the possibility of Twisted Metal from Firesprite launching later this year. It was supposed to launch in 2023 but the project got rebooted. As for what gets revealed from PS Studios this year here's my picks: 1) Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement 2)New game from either Team Asobi/ Bluepoint 3) Twisted Metal Still too early for Santa Monica , Bend, Housemarque to reveal their games imo.

Really hoping the Twisted Metal sells physical copies and has a classic single player tournament style, with multiple characters, levels and ending movies. Kinda like Black or Head On. The fact that nothing's been revealed about TM still makes me worried that it's just gonna be a rushed PSN download, similar to the PS3 version.

I hope Sony's first party studios are able to release some stuff this year, I haven't really been excited by a Sony first party game since Returnal (which wasn't even a first party studio when it released). There's plenty of third party stuff to play, but I would really like to see something from studios like Sucker Punch and Bluepoint.

It not being 1st party matters because PS was known for dropping banger after banger and they've only had a handful (if that, I only cared for 3 and 1 was a remake[DemonSouls]) decent games this gen and we're 3 years in plus add on that there's nothing good confirmed for the next 2 years... Buying a studio AFTER they release a banger doesn't give them the credit of making said banger but just owning it 😂😂

The whole point of the PS4 pro model was because 4k TVs were starting to become more affordable in 2016. I doubt Sony will put out a PS5 pro when 8k TVs are still expensive and there are not that many games for the PS5 itself.

Naughty dog should be close to ready as far as we know they have been working on their new IP and factions simultaneously since 2020 and they were able to do that because they didn't work on another Uncharted, Housemarque is probably not ready but it depends on how big their next game is.

@@user-hq6kn5vp2q I really wouldn't get your hopes up on Naughty Dog. They pumped money and that means staff time at Factions. They also did a remake and a remaster in house. A studio that takes 5/6 years to make one game with 100% of it's staff cannot have gotten that far with less than 50% of it's staff in 3 years. I think a new single player game from Naughty Dog is a good 3 or 4 years away.

I agree, most PS studios already have years of development of their unannounced games. I would also add Sucker Punch to your list, Ghost 2 could be a 2025 game. Bend could announce its game, their last one was 2019, no? So it will be 5 years now.

@@alexporto5669 Ryan mentioned Sucker Punch on his video and was the main reason I didn't put it on my comment. Depending on how massive Ghost 2 is, it could be 2025/2026. Bend started working on their new IP in 2021 and highly doubt they'll be ready to be announced considering they're a small studio

Sony needs to prioritize a new Little Big Planet game by Media Molecules and make its online a live service. That game was revolutionary that Nintendo themselves copied it with Mario Maker. That IP has a huge potential.

in my opinion they need to go back partially to the philosophy they had before in pushing more exclusive content and IPs as unique as possible in an era where most open world titles feel like the same game just re-skined to this day one of my top 3 ps5 titles is Returnal and Demons Souls remake, one of them being a release title.

I think PSVR2 numbers are higher than expected. PSVR1 launched at the holiday season in 2016, whereas PSVR2 outsold it during a spring launch. PSVR2's decreases in sales in the following months may be attributed to a historically slower summer selling season. But its sales will invariably have picked up during 2023's holiday season. I don't know if 2.5M units is realistic, but I would be surprised if it failed to breach 1M units at the very least.

@@pepegaleoI hope it sees more hybrid releases like GT7, RE8, RE4, NMS, etc. It would be nice if this where a trend -- developers releasing games flatscreen and VR. I would also like to see some PSVR1 ports, like an Astrobot Rescue Mission remaster. Ryan speculates an Astrobot hybrid game which would be INCREDIBLE.

I genuinely don't understand why there is a need for a hardware upgrade for the PS5. It really doesn't need an upgrade at all. If u tell me it's for 8k gaming please go check how much 8k screens go for today and how much 4k screens were back when the PS4 Pro was a thing. 8k screens are just not nearly as affordable as 4k screens were. Not to mention bro it's a freakin console, 4k is already an insane resolution. Remember, the average console user sits about 2 meters away from a display when gaming so u barely notice a difference between 1080p and 4k, u think u'll notice anything going from 4k to 8k? I sincerely doubt it. The only reason why PS4 and Xbox One had a mid gen upgrade is because both had laughably weak hardware and really needed the upgrade. I don't see that at all with PS5 or the Xbox Series. And if it actually gets priced at 600$ that would be absolute robbery. It was bad enough that the slim model (digital version) got more expensive but the pro going for even more than that is insane. Remember guys that we still have not seen any price cuts at all with the PS5 while when the PS4 slim released it was 100$ cheaper (300$) than the launch price AND the Pro was the same price as the launch price (which was 400$) not more expensive. Sony is absolutely crazy for pulling these price tags over a console that, may I remind u, still requires an online subscription that also got a 30% price increase to play online on. The fact that we all allowed online play to be a subscription in the first place still boggles my mind. Microsoft tried pulling that shit on PC years ago and there was an outrage, so much so that Microsoft backed off and retracted it but kept it for Xbox.

PSVR2 desperately needs a price cut. I still can't believe they thought they could get away with pricing it higher than the PS5. I was ready to buy one, and the double whammy of no backwards compatibility and the price made me decide to wait. I still haven't bought one, and I'm the exact customer they should've easily had by now.

Sony needs to make a Japanese acquisition to strengthen their presence there. Their best bet realistically: Level-5 Studios: Ni No Kuni live service brings in revenue and popular JRPG's like Dark Cloud or Ni No Kuni. Big potential. Cygames: If Grandblue Fantasy scores high and gets popular, this would make a great get. KadoKawa: Strengthen anime, manga and streaming services. FromSoftware get too.

FromSoftware never revisits their old projects and is always onto the next thing, so if there is any chance in hell of Bloodborne getting a new port, it would have to be between them finally releasing Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, and their revealing of what their next project is

My two main wishes for PS in 2024 are 1) a Steam Deck equivalent for true portable, offline PS gaming, and 2) that they put their money where their mouth is when they claimed the PS+ price hikes were to "deliver better experiences" and, yknow, actually do that. I don't need or want day 1 games, but it's honestly so weak that we barely have PS2 or even PS1 games to play on Premium, no DLC offerings (seriously, why am I the only one asking for this??), game trials and movie/anime streaming are all but useless, there's just zero creativity to the service besides offering a "pretty good" library of PS4-5 games. PS Plus should be a celebration of the greatest brand in gaming, not a digital bargain bin

PC sales have been trash. Sony was expecting to get at least 50% of the numbers they get on console and they’re getting 10% or a whole lot less.

It's really all the wrong sort of games. As evident not only by the sales, but also complete absence from the top of the Steam charts. Even if not all ports were attached to as insignificant numbers as R&C, they would probably even have been better off to continue their live service plans as the sole dual platform efforts.

If that's true, then part of me is happy they're failing. It's diluting the value of the brand to Xbox levels, in a console generation that is already struggling to justify itself with its own games compared to the PS4, PS3, PS2, and even PS1. They need to keep as much shit on their own box right now or there will be very little reason to own the PS5 console Doesn't really make much sense anyway for PC audiences to be starting on the 4th (or like 7th technically) God of War game or the like 10th or 12th Ratchet & Clank game, or Uncharted 4 (the finale of the whole series they never played). Port the old games first. But of course, we are dealing with today's Sony, who does not care at all about their legacy games and only cares about what blew up real big and popular right NOW. Just another trend chaser now

Sony will finish around $6,000,000,000 in profits for the year, give or take $100 million. Down from $9 billion last year. Sony's year ends March 31, 2024. The cost of game development is an issue. Spider-Man 2 cost $315 million.

I can't believe we went through 2023 without more single-player 1st party Sony games being announced. I remember thinking before the E3 time frame, we only know about Spiderman 2 coming this year and Wolverine eventually, they've got to start showing us what else is coming from their main studios. Nope, apparently not. I'm not opposed to their live service ambitions but they cancelled TLoU, which probably had the best chance of succeeding. Marathon is interesting since it's Bungie and the CG trailer at least looked cool but that seems to be getting delayed out of 2024. Concord didn't show us anything to get excited about. Fairgames gave us an okay idea as to what it is but well, wasn't exactly promising (I'll reserve judgement until I play it but the tone they're going for didn't do anything for me).

You are probably closer to 58 million. That is true that the last three weeks of the holidays things still a lot more. My Best Buy sold about 400 PS5, 300 Switches, and about 50 Xbox X& S.

Very interesting predictions this year, Ryan! I'm curious to see if one or more of them come true. Two of them that I agree with the most are that the PS5 Pro will be $599 at launch, and we'll get the reveal of it in September with a November launch. Apart of me thinks we'll get a logo reveal for it at CES next week, like when we got the logo for the PS5 back in 2020 at CES. Also, I agree that Eric Lempel will be the new president and CEO of SIE/PlayStation mainly because Eric just looks like someone Sony would hire for that position. Someone who's more interested in SIE's bottom line and how the overall business is doing more so than being a champion for the PS player base.

PSVR2 was sunk the second they announced it wouldn't be backward compatible. I would've loved to buy into a new VR system with a built-in library of all the PSVR1 titled I've gotten through Plus over the years. Without that, VR2's value proposition craters to a potentially large group of new adopters.

Hey Ryan - Happy New Year and thanks for all the great predictions. The one thing I am disappointed about is PSVR2 sales and adoption. I got one for my family over Thanksgiving Black Friday and have so much buyers remorse that I'm thinking I'm going to return it. It was so exciting to purchase but it's been over a month and I still haven't opened it and so I don't want to lock my money into a dust collector. I still have my PS4 VR and will continue to make do with that. In any case thanks for all the great 2024 predictions. Is that the new slim PS5 behind you, and if so why did you trade in your OG PS5?

@@MichaelM28 might be, but we ps fans will be sorry if Microsoft decides to quit console business if they keep getting beaten by Sony, prices would skyrocket in no time I suspect. On the other hand, Nintendo would have a nice opening to start making big consoles again, imagine a Nintendo console with all the accessoires to be able to play all generations of Nintendo games _and_ next gen games by Nintendo, I have 0 interest in a Wii type device or handheld, wish Nintendo would make a real console again. I feel like it's important for Sony this year to reveal what their major first party studios are working on. Aside from Wolverine from Insomniac, we have little idea of what studios like Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Housemarque, and others are definitively working on. I feel like announcing upcoming games from their big studios will give players something to look forward to for the next few years.

@MichaelM28 You boys need to do some research and realise that PlayStation's big console sales and metacritic scores are not translating into major profits. PlayStation's costs are growing much quicker than their revenue. Killing profits. Most of their revenue is controlled by 3rd parties with Microsoft controlling a large chunk of that by owning COD. They've described their own business model as outdated and stated they're a long way behind their competitors in having their model where it needs to be. Jobs and projects aren't being cut for no reason. PlayStation, specifically 1st party hardware, software and services are not profitable enough. They're planning on soft-launching games for over $100 by splitting Spider-Man three in multiple $50 parts. None of this is a secret. None of this doesn't mean I don't like PlayStation or that I haven't just ploughed over 70 hours into HFW. It's just the reality of the situation that the model PlayStation used to become the big player in the console market is starting to bite them in the backside financially. They need to pivot badly, they're well aware of that in their own documents that no one else was to see and Sony cannot afford to pay them through that pivot. A sale or merger seems very likely to me. A buyout by an Apple or a merger with Epic make alot of sense.

Pretty much every studio should have one game to announce this year, those studios are all nearing the end of development cycles. Sony should acquire a handful of studios on the rise and avoid acquiring a struggling publisher.

The secret of next gen and the secret of better looking and running games is in optimization. Which is why horizon zero dawn, horizon forbidden West, infamous Second Son, and a few others, look and run better on PS4 pro than the majority of games of this next/current generation, despite being from the previous generation. I have a XSX and I switch back and forth between that and the 4 pro. In other words we really don't need a PS5 pro 😂. At least not for a while, maybe not ever. PS5 can do 4k 60 if a game is optimized. Who honestly needs more than 4k 60 lol. They could realistically double the length of this console cycle if developers were on board to continue learning how to better optimize for the hardware. I personally don't think I will ever need more than 4k 60. At some point graphics and frames are going to max out. 12k 180 fps will never be truly necessary lol even if they do go there eventually.
