A treasured (and tattered) ’67 Jazzmaster, a dismembered doubleneck, a double-dose of stereo Jazz Chorus, and a surprisingly simple stomp station colors the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots-and the rest of Wayne Coyne’s twisted Willy Wonka-esque adventures.
Over the last four decades, the courageous and creative Flaming Lips have put out 16 studio albums. Their genre is an alphabet soup that ranges from acid rock and ambient to zany psychedelia, all while pumping on a pop heartbeat. They’ve won three Grammys, written and filmed an alien colonization movie and soundtrack (Christmas on Mars), reimagined Dark Side of the Moon with Henry Rollins, had their hit “Do You Realize??” named the official rock song of Oklahoma, and of course, performed in bubbles before and during the pandemic.
As members of one of rock’s most adventurous bands, founding frontman Wayne Coyne and his longtime collaborator, multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd (who originally joined the band in 1991 as a drummer), have tried almost everything, including transforming their sensitive-smash album, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, into a Broadway musical. And Yoshimi was back in the spotlight this spring as the Lips toured for its (delayed) 20th anniversary, playing it front to back for their show dates later in the season.
Before the band delighted a sold-out crowd at the Ryman Auditorium with Yoshimi and 11 other of their greatest hits, Drozd invited PG’s Chris Kies onstage to catalog his bizarre-yet-basic setup. Steven details the origins and deterioration of his 1967 Fender Jazzmaster (and why there’s a Hot Rails in the bridge), explains the superficial reason why his doubleneck only has one fretboard, and shows off a pedalboard that’s probably smaller than yours.

I did some repair/modification work for the boys, and that guitar came in for some work. We also worked on a puke green jazzmaster, and restored a vintage Hallmark Sweptwing 12 string that looked like it was on the Titanic. They were always bringing in Moogs and weird pedals. Always a pleasure to deal with. Just don't take off any tape.

You can tell hes still really proud of all the cool stuff him and the band get to do, and he wants people to hear his music. good energy! enthusiastic 30+ years on

The Guild guitar he was trying to recall to mind at the end is the Guild Polara S-100; it's like an SG, and it has significantly longer string length behind the bridge to the tailpiece, and the pickups are sometimes pretty microphonic, which, with the thin body, lends it well to controlled feedback and a more "open" sound as far as humbucker guitars go. Kim Thayil used them as his main guitars in Soundgarden.

Steven has the neck pickup below the pickup ring to get more clarity. I set neck pickup on my Les Pauls the same way. I would say the biggest set up mistake people make on any guitar is setting the pickups too high. You get more output, but you’re sacrificing detail and harmonics. Lowering the pickup is like taking winds off the coil.

What a humble guy. I forgot all about that bubble show they did when Covid hit. At the time I thought I didn't think that much of it for some reason, but seeing it three years later, I can appreciate what an amazing feat it was. As someone who is a guitar nut, it really baffled me that he nor the interviewer knew that his double neck clearly an Epiphone. I really wanted to know more about that Epiphone Les Paul Junior Special in the back there.

I have never seen more fun shows than flaming lips shows. They played a festival in Tulsa Oklahoma once and lied to the crowd that the mayor okayed the use of marijuana for this one song. Literally everyone who had some pulled it out and started smoking and passing it around. At first police tried to stop it but then realized it was a fruitless endeavor. If I remember correctly the major was actually on stage when he said it which made it even more funny.

I was wondering about that Jazzmaster ever since I watched the music video for "Bad Days" a few months ago where Wayne was playing it in the video. I couldn't figure out for the life of me what the bridge pickup was but now I know. I didn't even recognize the guitar at first until I saw the pickup. It looked rough back then but now it looks like a different guitar 😂

Those early 90s MIK epiphones had “Gibson” embossed on the truss rod cover. I had an SG just like that as a kid. Still do (pulled all the frets off impulsively when I was 15 and I use it for slide now 😎). They have a scarf jointed neck and mine never broke despite many falls!

I have a 98' MIK ES335 DOT Epiphone that I Frankenstein'd with Grover tuners, Bigsby tremolo system, and hand wound custom pickups from a dude in Austin, TX. It sounds better than the 335's that were built in Nashville at that time for a 3rd of the price...😃

From what I can find on the internet that 12 string is a stock Epiphone maybe around late 90s early 2000 and likely not older than 2002 judging by the truss rod cover, bolt on neck, stop bar placement, and all 4 pickups having covers (there's other videos where you can see they had covers.) The truss rod cover plate use to say Gibson until around 2004. The 2003 models still said Gibson but they were slightly different in design.

The subdecay liquid sunshine is more than "just an overdrive" it's one of the finest "more" pedals I've ever found, keeps your guitar feeling natural but gives it some hair on its chest and a tom selleck mustache. There are some models that can run 18v, hard to beat. Not compressed, just thick drive tone.
@cjbcarr1
@cjbcarr1 Жыл бұрын
on all the time? i'm on the hunt for an always on "more better" pedal and remembered being intrigued by that one like ten years ago
@michaelfowler3187
@michaelfowler3187 Жыл бұрын
@@cjbcarr1 I've only heard my version which has the 24v cap inside allowing it to run 18v power, but at 9 volt I would not hesitate to use it as an always on, still - and I think any of the models probably sound very close. I would prefer it as a final stage between my other pedals and my amp, as a "more button" or an always on thing that glues my pedal sounds with the amp. It very naturally bonds your guitar and amp, it should not impart a lot of character other than some "bigger" sound, strong lows and mids, but not flabby loose lows. The brighter and grittier shades of the pedal create a nice sizzle but not harsh or fizzy. I hope that helps, definitely worth a shot and if using it earlier like a preamp or a middle of your chain gain stage i can't imagine it does anything bad, haha. It's been a long time but I recall feeling like the fulltone ocd set for lower gain and just a booster with a bit of drive and touch response - I got similar feeling from that but it's been years. The ocd gets a lot more aggressive, so I'm not trying to compare them except for the subtler "make bigger" tones I got from both. I also found that the clean preamp or whatever boost is in the Wilson effects haze vibe pedal, that's been a great always on clean stage where I can just have the level boost , but anytime I want the rate and width to start vibing it can do that. Odd choice here but had to mention it.

No, it’s a Gibson. Don’t know if you heard about the uproar in the industry a couple of years ago about displaying Gibson logos, but many famous musicians decided to just cover up the logo to not promote the brand.
