@@premierguitar Ahh that will explain it. No idea what it was like in person but I imagine it would have sounded a little more natural if you mic'ed it instead as dry patches are made to incorporate room noise but you would probably emulate that on direct patches for recording otherwise it sounds a little ... unnatural.

@hkguitar1984

Well stated Doc. To choose one or the other would limit creativity. Myself, for the last 46 years of playing I've been a analog-guy, that said, I'm totally open to these newer digital rigs. My only complaint, I've been playing through the same Fender Twin Reverb I purchased new back in 1976, I just can't imagine these modern processors lasting that long without totally failing. Again, that just goes to my age and mind-set, newer products are not designed to last very long as regular updating of equipment is now the norm. Phones, computers and even vehicles are no longer designed to last very long as they'll be left behind due to technology advancements. And that is my crux, I have a difficult time spending what some would consider a significant investment for a product designed to be replaced within 5 to 10 years. All that being said, the flexibility and creative possibilities are amazing, not to mention that Twin Reverb of mine isn't getting any lighter to carry!

The timing of this Rundown couldn’t be better, just the other day I’d just been Googling what rig Guthrie had been running on this latest run of Aristocrats shows after spotting there was no traditional guitar cab behind him. Guthrie could play anything and make it sound incredible but the dichotomy of his modern fully digital and compact setup on one side of the stage and Bryan’s utterly old school mega stack of doom is pretty cool!

I played a modeler straight to PA with a symphony in Puerto Rico ... and what Guthrie says about the sound guys and stage volume is bang on. You just have to remember to use the high and low cuts otherwise you're going to get a lot of foul looks from the sound police. The hardest part of the gig was knowing full well that what I was hearing through my in ears was NOT what the audience was hearing. That was a little alienating, but if you're a "pro", you'll ride it out and concentrate on playing the right notes with the right picking dynamics. That's what really matters.

I used to be opposed to digital modelers until someone reframed my thinking on them. They’re not supposed to sound like a live rig; they’re supposed to sound like a mic’d up rig through your monitors. That being said, digital is so versatile and simple, it really makes sense for any situation where you’re playing through a decent sound system.

Time to step up the game for Rig Rundowns when modelers are involved. For example, an AxeFx can be (and often is) the whole artist's rig, similarly to this case. Even though it is contained in a single unit, conceptually it is still a signal out of a guitar and into a rig made of pedals, amps, cabs, microphones, just like a real one. Artist : "I'm using an AxeFx (or any other modeler)" PG: Q1 "what amps/models are you using, what for?" Q2 "Are you trying to reproduce the rigs/tones used on X album or do you have a different approach?" Q3 "Stock IR cabs, Third party, custom made by yourself, what cabs and speakers?" Q4 "For rhythm/lead/clean work, do you switch patches/amps or keep the same one but turn on/off pedals, boosters etc, or do you use mainly your guitar volume to control saturation?" Pretty much the same as a physical rig. Considering how much time Guthrie spent toying with this unit during lockdown, his unique and varied experience, the way he plays, and how articulate he is when explaining what he does, this could have been a goldmine of information (and also huge advertisement for Fractal Audio :D ).

No matter how many times you hear it, it never gets old. It's the player 1st. then the gear. So many guitarist think they sound great by letting you know what vintage pedals they got but you have to be able to play, then play well to know the sound you want in your head. You watch everyone switch to digital now that Guthrie's done it. 😆

Well to be fair, Fractal already is used in countless Arena and Stadium rigs around the world (Metallica, Deff Leppard, Journey). It's hard to beat honestly. Every amp and effect in the world at your disposal, and they are 100% consistent in sound nightly with zero maintenance. And for small tours like the Aristocrats, you can't top the convenience of being able to carry your whole guitar rig around in a backpack. Especially when most of their gigs are fly-in one nighter's or single bus tours that are hitting smaller venues.

I finally got a line 6 pod go to simplify. I have two half stack tube amps in stereo with a stereo pedal rack with a midi foot controller. I soldered all the cables and wired it up myself. To jam I have to switch on the rack, switch on rack units, pull out two drawers and turn on pedals, toggle the midi controller to another preset and back to initialize all the hardware midi, switch on amp 1, switch on amp 2, again toggle presets to initialize the amp head midi, switch amp 1 off standby, switch amp 2 off standby... then I'm ready to jam and put hours on the tubes that eventually have to be replaced. The Pod Go is a single switch to turn it on, because it's plugged into a powered 12" speaker that is always on. It sounds great, my only gripe is I can't get feedback out of it like a real amp. But feedback swell is something I only do for like one song

I’m an old dude who has been doing the tube amp/conventional pedalboard thing for decades. I read up on, and see the demos of these digital units all the time, and I know that the tide is turning. I have often tinkered with the idea of getting one of these units to try out, but being an old dude I am intimidated by the technology ie: menus, programming and whatnot. I also find myself “gig less” right now so…….. But I was recently down in Nashville and I saw a lot of bands. Most of the guitar players I saw had one of these types of units and was going direct. And in THAT environment I totally get it. Humping gear up and down Broadway, through crowds, upstairs, quick set up and breakdown, maybe a couple of times a day…..it makes sense. If I was doing that drill on a regular basis, I’d probably have one too. But having said that, I DID see a small handful of players with the conventional amp/pedalboard set up and u you can just hear and feel the difference. Everyone in the venues were all still enjoying the music and having a great time so it’s all relative. I’d still like to try one someday.

The Fractal stuff really is a cut above the rest. I highly recommend it. The feeling of moving air on stage can still be replicated in many ways, never mind the simple addition of a great set of ears, but to have the ability to carry around that much variety in a backpack now is kind of unbeatable. To each his/her own, but the years of having to drag around a heavy and finicky tube amp or half/full stack are thankfully behind us.

It has nothing to do with how busy or technical the music is. It's all just a matter of how good the Amp modeling is now. And Fractal has nailed it. Guys like Neil schon from Journey, Phil Collin and Viv from Deff Leppard are all using essentially this same rig in arenas and stadiums as well. You can't beat being able to carry around this kind of versatility in tone, and you can't match the consistency with tube amps.

I've been looking at the "pod" concepts ( if that is actually applicable as I am a beginner ) and I like the idea but have still seen some reason for it not being a stand alone system. Thoughts?

He says something that basically can apply to everything. “Whatever is right for the situation.” Let the situation tell us what we need, not politics.

Interesting. All just tools in the toolbox IMO. I think if you want / need a wide range and variety of sounds, modeling is the way to go. So many options available. Not anywhere near Govan's level of playing or venues, but I currently have several rigs for different situations: 1) GT-1000 direct rig; 2) SY-1000 direct rig; 3) Versatile amp rig (Catalyst 100 + HX Effects); 4) core tone amp rig (Marshall Origin 50C + HX Effects); 5) Metal amp rig (Engl dual 100W rack rig + HX Effects). Of these, I use my SY-1000 direct rig and Marshall Origin 50C + HX Effects the most. The Catalyst 100 + HX Effects is more for clean, ambient tones. Probably going to sell the GT-1000 and Engl rigs.

3:15 since a very old Guthrie's video where he shows his "Leslie" attempt, Ive always wanted to learn this style of playing but I cannot find many examples. Can anyone help me to find more examples of this style?

I’ve been on the FM9 waiting list for quite some time- after 50 some years of gigging with a 2/12 amp and a bunch of pedals, I really want to create new sounds. More and more times, the sound man at gigs that provide pa and a sound man find my guitar just too loud and hard to control

The problem is the sound guy. And the venue. And the band. Do what i do. Stay home and play tube amps alone in the basement. Best tone of my life

Guthrie is how I think a musician should be. Takes his craft but not himself seriously. Guy is really a phenomenon. Love the aristocrats such mind numbing great musicians. I can listen to this guy talk for hours....& I’m a bass player lol.
