Premier Guitar invaded Rival Sons’ soundcheck for a Rundown of Scott Holiday’s offsets, Oranges, and three boards worth of tone treats.
Holiday wanted a guitar that fit the sound and image of Rival Sons. He went with “Bluebird,” a 1999 Gibson Custom Historic 1965 Firebird VII Reissue. It’s totally stock and strung with Cleartone (.011-.050) strings.
When Holiday wants to get low and rumbly, he goes with this 2015 Kauer Baritone Banshee Custom, strung with Cleartone (.016-.071) strings.
For something hollow-ish, Holiday plays “Ol' Bess,” his 2014 Fano Alt de Facto Custom GF6.

That was without a doubt one of the best Rig Rundown episodes I've ever seen. Of course I'm a big Scott Holiday and Rival Son's fan. That being said, the fact that he did it himself, he talked a lot and had great stories, and he was super down-to-earth and appreciative of PG just was amazing! Thanks Premier Guitar and Scott!

I am not even into Rival Sons (not that I don't like them - I just haven't listened to them much yet) and I totally agree with you, this is one of the best rig rundowns ever.

Don't forget that this is a rig rundown that doesn't promote amp sims (nothing against them) It's nice to enjoy simple old school guys using amps and pedals

I’d never heard of Rival Sons before this rundown, but you can bet your ass I’ve listened to them constantly after! Love it love the board and love the guitars, and he seems like such a cool guy and I love it man

I read an interview with Steve Miller years ago where he said he used a firebird exclusively in the studio to record Fly Like an Eagle and Book of Dreams.

Great point this guy makes about purists looking down upon those that use a lot of gear. As long as you got your chops down, it really shouldn't matter how little or how much gear you use!

This may be my favorite pedal set up of all time. He has Almost everyone of my favorite pedals on there. From the Caroline to the Fuzz pedals to the envelope filters to the Dallas Rangemaster clone.....he’s got it all! The wave cannon is great pedal. Bro you need to Hawaiian Pizza!

Been kind of wanting to travel down this road of fuzz a bit, never realized just how much went into those tones. One of the best rundowns I've ever watched by one of my favorite guitarists for one of my favorite bands. Really enjoyed it.

The slide is a JetSlide by Gary Romero. Pros and cons: you can play in normal tuning and alternate chords and slide by keeping it on your finger. It avoids from picking up a slide and putting it away when playing chords. Once you get used to it, it's quite a nice gizmo, the 2 main things to know is that you have to measure it right (Gary offers several sizes) and not to wear a ring on the finger you use it on, as it interferes with your playing. Outside from that, it's a great invention, quite underrated, it's easy to use and it sounds right. \m/

So glad you're a guitar nerd - It made for a spectacular show in Carrboro, NC last night. I've seen a lot of shows and have to say that this one was truly EPIC!! Rival Sons is the hardest working band I've ever seen! Will be there every time I can from now on!

While I don't care much for their music, I loved this video! Scott's pure joy and excitement about his gear is inspiring. Would love to hear more in-depth information about his pedals though. Surprised he's not using a Quartermaster switcher (or some type of pedal switcher). These Rig Rundowns should be at least 2 hours! Need to hear some amp/guitar tones!

One of the best rundowns out there. Serious respect for Scott and tho it took me a while, I'm way into Rival Sons these days. Only point of contention - Hendrix said "Watch out for your ears" before playing Sgt Pepper's at a matinee setup to celebrate the album being released like three days before (maybe four days?) He was talking to a bunch of kids in the audience, but he was also talking to the Beatles, so he simultaneously blew their minds with that while blowing their damn heads off with those Marshalls. Had to point that out but seriously, you're the goddamn man, Scott

I just came across these guys after watching Greeta Von Fleet vids. These guys are awsum. amazing guitar player and all the rest of the band. Not even really my sort of music but they just sounded really good. The drummer is off the meat rack.
