Reverb addict Mark Speer and badass bassist Laura Lee met with Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger before their ultra-hip, sold-out show at Nashville’s Basement East. Speer and Lee took the crew through their non-conventional approach to nuevo-vintage tones.
Mark Speer tours with a single guitar: his 2001 Fender Classic Series ’70s Stratocaster. Speer hot-rodded the Strat with DiMarzio Cruiser pickups in the neck and bridge as well as extra-large frets and a TUSQ saddle and string trees. This Strat stays strung with D’Addario Chrome flatwound (.042-.032-.024-.016-.012-.010) strings. Amazingly, Speer has played the same (almost) round Jim Dunlop Green (.73 mm) Tortex pick for years.
Laura Lee’s main axe is her 2009 SX Custom Handmade J-style bass that’s been upgraded with DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickups and strung with D’Addario Chrome flatwound strings.

It took me weeks to get it.. The key moment is at 11:58 where Marc says about the DS1: "No distorsion, NO TONE". That's where his "Wurlitzer" kinda tone comes from: HIGH tone from the wha, into the LOW tone of the dist. Magic. (sorry my wife, doesn't give a damn about it so I had to tell you guys...)

For those going for this tone at home, very important to consider: 1. His pick ups are actually dimarzio pro tracks (DP-188s), not cruisers. He personally clarified this on a Reddit AMA some time after this was recorded. 2. The always-on toe-down wah will be wayyy too bright with regular round wound strings. Flats are darker which offset the trebly wah. The pick ups are darker as well, so they play a key role here too. Amp at V4, T5, B8 3. His DS-1 knob settings (0-0-10) are actually genius. Too many guitarists use so much dirt (drive/dist) and don’t rely enough on volume (level) to hit that speaker hard to get a nice break-up. Experienced players you know & love with great tone are using much less DRIVE than you think and are using more VOLUME. So try this 0-0-10 method out with your OD pedal(s) and go from there. 4. Don’t overlook his compressor settings. Notice how he has output all the way up and sensitivity all the way down. This wasn’t mentioned in the video, but this allows him to achieve incredible dynamic range and sensitivity with the attack of his right hand and adjusting his volume knob. Play lightly, sounds soft and nice. Dig in, and you get that full loud crunchy tone. Try this with your comp pedal if it’s a similar type, where you’ve got two knobs: one basically for volume and the other for blend.

Story of the wigs: Mark and Laura Lee were already well known musically, in their hometown of Houston, when they started out as Khruangbin with DJ. They saw Khruangbin as a new start, in a sense, in their music careers. They decided to wear wigs as a diguise, so people wouldn't recognize them easily. They've kept the wigs, as it's a part of who they are as a band. Plus, it'd be odd if they abruptly stopped wearing them. They look quite different without them. I've also read in a forum that the wigs aid in their getting to the merchandise table easier- they can simply pop the wigs off, walk through the crowd, and get to where they need to be. I saw them in Asheville and Laura Lee was sitting outside without her wig. The wigs are a part of their style, but also gives them some freedom, in my opinion.

@RocknJazzer
@RocknJazzer 2 жыл бұрын
@@tradingstuff2120 semantics aside, I meant while he and the band have a nice style as I love the orig 70s sound so appreciate them bringing aspects of that back to greater attention in the last 5ish years, bands that gain attention from a throwback sound usually have their moment as a trend, but as non originators are usually not mentioned in the future when discussing said style/genre/era, so I doubt few internet musicologists will speak of him/them in the same sentence as curtis mayfield etc when talking about 60s 70s instrumental soul psych jam music or whatever you want to call it (thai funk, etc) except as a footnote like "the style had a brief revival in interest the late 2010's early 2020's by bands such as Khruangbin etc". I dig Mark+the band and everything about them for taking the chance and working hard to bring back my beloved 70s crossover style music, but going fwds a decade or more I doubt they will be but a footnote, and thats fine, thats how genres and eras and trends work, doesnt negate at all how great he and they are, just is what it is. Yeah I take this stuff pretty seriously as a 70s music geek and musician similarly playing retro styles long before they were cool, when they were cool, and after they were cool. Basically I dont care about if any older styles of music are cool or not at any given time, I will keep listening and playing and supporting said music and bands at all times as I have done the past 3-4 decades, and back then it was the peak of being uncool...so uncool it was actually cool long after the fact, lol etc etc.

That bass is a late 1960s Hofner copy made by Fujigen Gakki in Japan. There is a picture of an old Greco catalogue page, 1969, with exactly that bass in the book "History of Japanese Electric Guitars" by Frank Meyers. Greco being a brand of Kanda Shokai who had the guitars produced by Fujigen.

Ahhhh...what a pleasure...laying on my bench in the garden on a lazy german holiday afternoon. Watching a RigRundown with Mr. John, who has german roots i bet, is always a joy to watch. He still does the best RR's for me. Seeing an SX bass and a guitarist with only ONE guitar is so refreshing in times where other artists bragging with gear. I don't know why Sister Tharpe comes in my mind now, maybe because she made great music with just a guitar... Thank you Mr. Bohlinger, keep going.
