It's great to hear a fellow NI man doing videos about lawn maintenance. I've been working on my own lawn recently, mostly removing a lot of moss and thatch to reseed and fill in bald and thin spots so these videos have been a good reference. I don't have the 'fancy' equipment and tools you have but I think I'm getting the job done. I'm very tempted to buy a mechanical scarifier and aerator but I'll see how things turn out with the tools I've used. Cheers for the videos!

I borrowed my neighbours electric scarifier , WOW ! what a difference, you wouldn’t believe how much moss and thatch you remove ! I then used a lawn rake , and that picked up most of the waste , and then if you use an electric mower after , this will act as a vacuum cleaner and pick up all of the smaller stuff , works brilliantly and doesn’t blow all the waste about.

Just commenting to help you out. Nobody in the states does a job like you do and if you were here you’d be my dude. Seeding has to be the most frustrating thing I do. 2 plots side by side. One flourishes. One looks like my mother in law. Just random success. I do not scarify but try to aerate. I don’t roll the turf but try to walk and pound with the side of a metal groundskeeper rake. Do you try to cover the seed with anything? I’ve tried light peat moss, light compost, fine topsoil. Not any noticeable differences. I truly believe it boils down to luck. That perfect storm of moisture, temperature, and sun. If we make it to Northern Ireland I want to treat you to a beer

Good job I've watched your other videos so I know contact with the soil is important and top dressing with compost helps keep the moisture in. Your lawn certainly didn't look too short.

Hi Robbie. Just wanted to drop you a quick line to say thanks. Really enjoy your videos. This year I followed your advice and bought myself a proper scarifier. I also made a DIY dragmat as per your instructions. On the first weekend in September I scarified the lawn and took out so much thatch it was unbelievable (my lawn is 25 metres by 15 roughly). I overseeded then top dressed with top soil and overseeded again for good measure. The game changer this year was the dragmat. If anyone hasn't made one yet then they should do as this has helped enormously. So much so that 3-4 weeks later I have really good growth and after it's first light cut it looks fantastic. Thanks again !

great video. not sure what the typical soil is in Ireland, but I live in northeastern U.S.A. and we have a lot of class soil, which is terrible for growing a nice lawn. in that case, amending the soil with gypsum (calcium), greensand (if you can find it), and lots of compost will do the trick, but you will want aerate the solid before hand. aerators are very expensive so yo'll likely either rent one or pay a landscape business to do it for you, but it will allow those amendments to get into the soil & for water to as well.

I think the biggest mistake would be not dethatching / scarifying. I was using a dethatching blade on my lawn mower, and just this year I bought a scarifier. Seems like it'll be a huge difference, because I got twice as much material out! Also, after over-seeding, I covered the thinnest spots with some peat moss. I'd like to do the whole lawn with compost but I'm in a bit of a time constraint... I will start leveling with compost every month or so once I've got the new seeds established... if that's a good idea... I assume I can't go over 2cm at a time, and I would think about 1 month of growth might allow me to do another application???

Worst mistake? Over seeding too early? Not enough water? Letting the birds eat it? Just chucking it on the lawn?? Arrrh contact with soil. This is so helpful I am gonna get a mat harrow.

When I'm over seeding even with a broadcast spreader set at around 15/20 my lawn eats through grass seed. I thought a 20kg bag of grass seed would be plenty. My lawn is around 300m2. does that seem normal? Thanks @@Premier_lawns_official

I think the big mistake is that you mentioned aerating the lawn with a fork but you didn't actually do any areating, although, some say that using a scarifier is a form of aeration as the blades cut slits into the soil. I also think that it is worthwhile top dressing the lawn after over- seeding and before matting-in as it would improve seed-to-soil contact, prevent the seed being eaten by the birds or blown away by wind or washed away by rain.

I have just (sort of) inherited a very large hotel lawn (I was asked if I could mow it etc as the Gardener had left) It was lush and green, fed with weed and feed routinely. However it's unlevel and springy to walk on (looks arent everything) Cutting a long story short after I inspected it (you would seriously tear your hair out if you could have seen it?) I had to scalp it. Finally got them to purchase a scarifier. Scarified it 5 times over 2 days (large lawn and just me) could probably done with an other couple of passes. Looks horrendious, over seeded it last week, clay soil that wont drain. OMG nightmare guess I will have to do the same proccess in the spring? Anyway your videos are invaluable. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the very informative info and spoken in laymans terms.

Just started my overseeding for the year Robbie! Bought the Greenworks dethacher and it worked like a charm. Just rented an aerator for the day and it was amazing! Worth the money (at least this time)! Tomorrow spreading the seed. In the past I’ve put down some compost, then the seeds and gently mixed them together with back of rake. Seemed to work well... unless u have another suggestion? The excitement begins!

@@Premier_lawns_official I’m not sure if I’ve done my lawn in the right order.. I cut and scarified, few days later raked in some compost then aerated with a fork the next day. I over seeded plus a bit of fertiliser, raked that in with topsoil over everywhere, and then rolled with a duel cylinder and make sure it’s watered. Have I done any of this wrong? Thanks

I used wayyy too much seed when I created a new lawn last year. Rather than getting a measuring tape out, I tried to eye-ball it - that was a mistake! Initially it looked awesome! But by summer, it got way too thick and then suffered for months from heat stress (I guess down to overcrowding, and too much competition for water!). Now in Autumn, I'm going to scarify, topdress and overseed, in the hope that next year I can try again! Essentially my laziness to measure correctly led to a bad lawn that I couldn't do much about for 6 months! We have long summers around 40C, with little to no rain whatsoever, so you just can't scarify in those conditions.

I've a feeling once I scarify my lawn I'm going to be left with quite a few patchy areas due to excessive moss. Just wondering if I should put topsoil down too? Thanks!

My wife and I did so.e substantial work on our lawn around March 12. We scarified and overseeded the lawn. I watered regularly but on the 17th the rains came. The rain has been rather consistent which in not the norm here. I told me wife "it looks like St. Patrick's Day brought some Irish weather with it." After my in-laws retired from the military they purchased this house in 1993. We inherited it 11 years ago. My wife told me she sees grass growing places in the yard that it never grew before, lol. Thank you for the knowledge. (I used to watch golf on tv for the scenery. The putting greens always amazed me. It's like the low pile high traffic carpet but alive.)

It took me 2 months in spring to get germination. This month it took a few days for seeds to germinate. Autumn overseeding is so much better. Also in spring there are tonnes of weeds popping in to the lawn

Did the seed survive 2 months in the ground and then germinate?
@manjot1
@manjot1 Жыл бұрын
@@stevenbelcher5658 i overseeded twice. Second time I got top dressed it I think that's the one that germinated but even that was really slow. The spring season was really cold this year. I was reading and watching a lot of videos of people who also had really slow or no progress

Here in Finland we had very dry spring. I fixed bumpy loan, but due to heat and no rain - no germination. I overseeded again in fall, and germination is going well.

I was at a seminar this week at the K club in Dublin, they tore out most of their fairways in the spring and re-seeded in March, it took 3 weeks for the seed to germinate.

Hi four weeks ago I completely prepared and reseeded my back garden, the lawn that has grown I am really pleased with and I have mown it on a high setting, but there are some weeds also showing amongst it, is there anything I can do at this early stage to kill off the weeds?
@Premier_lawns_official
@Premier_lawns_official Жыл бұрын
Mike, 100 per cent leave the weed killing until next year. By all means, pull them out by hand. There are professional products that you can use 10 weeks after the seed has germinated but even at that I would recommend not spraying and let the lawn establish first. You will have a better lawn in the long term

Great video! Can you please give tips what to do in early spring, after we receeded in fall? Can you also tell does putting some calcium helps the grass? Here in Finland one of the tips professional give is every 3-5 years spred some calcium wich is sold in granules. Thanks
@Premier_lawns_official
@Premier_lawns_official Жыл бұрын
Adding calcium usually comes in the form of lime, we generally don't do that in the UK as it encourages weeds. also once you apply something to your soil you cant take it off again

what are your thoughts on covering the grass with a light layer of miracle grow container compost or similar? we have a lot of pigeons down here and they tend to eat the grass seed. saw you use fleece in one of your videos so I guess I could use this as an alternative to compost to keep the pigeons off the seed

I'm deep into the m18 fuel platform and been contemplating replacing my 200hp mower with it, is it worth the money in your opinion? Seed under the soil is going to be the best, sometimes I put it into the roller just to show that you can do that too as not everyone has a spreader
