Building a Deck and Screen Porch PART 2 - Framing and Sheathing the Roof

  Рет қаралды 149,517

Premier Outdoor Living

4 жыл бұрын

In part 2 of this deck and screen porch build we are setting roof rafters and sheathing the roof! This is a huge screen porch and a pretty steep roof pitch. The main thing we want to achieve is have the roof come perfectly off the existing roof so it looks like it was always there. It was a hot day to be building a roof but we got it done and it is looking awesome so far!

Got to love both the video haters AND the lovers since you were brave and confident enough to put yourselves out there! I really liked everything you filmed, including the personal touches. It's apparent you and your peeps care about the work you do so just take note of the positive and helpful comments. Did you do a continuation video for the deck and hardscaping? I need just about the same work done and I'm not that far from NJ (mid-Hudson, NY)...looking forward to connecting.

You used a single ply LVL for my 14x20 deck like you did. A engineer told me it had to be double ply minimum. He told me to add rafter ties and collar ties. This is a disaster for me since I'm after the opened-up cathedral look. I was told I could put another structural beam underneath. Any thoughts how you would handle this?

I'm just curious of a few structural points... I didn't see any hangers on the rafters or anything so it appears you were using the LVL as a ridge board rather that a ridge beam? But also it's a vaulted ceiling? Am I missing something here?

Looking good. Except technically, code states ridge must be deeper than rafters. If you set the ridge to the bottom of the rafters and clip the tops, most code checks won’t notice.

We were planning on using 2x8 rafters but the truss roof we were coming off made us make a last minute change to 2x12 to get the height we needed. So we packer down the ridge rafter so they are sitting nice now.

Roof frame is not code in my state. Ridge beam need to be greater than rafters. Respect to the guy installing the plywood, about the messing with the nails, that is not funnnny, and didn't make me laugh, that is more westing time, and materil. I will recommend to talk more about the job, or explain more the progress of the job.
@THEpremieroutdoor

Right on! Rafters were spec’d at 2x8 which is why we have a 2x10 ridge. Last minute we had to change to 2x12 rafters to meet the height of the roof trusses on the existing house. Afterwards we packed down the ridge and the inspector was fine with it

Do you use the 21 degree nailer to build the frame as well? If so, is there any problem with deck separation? Always used screws. Slower, but never pull away. Looking good too.
@THEpremieroutdoor

We do! Screws are used on some components like the ledger and some other connection points but for the most part it is held together with nails. Never had a problem with anything like that. I think putting extra blocking and bracing helps a lot

Instead of all the kerf cuts in the fly rafter notch, just make two cuts across the rafter for the sides of the notch, roll the rafter it on its side and make one plunge cut. Time is money.

Enjoyed the video. The way ya'll are extending the gable roof is exactly what I want to do to my 12 x 16 shop (shed lol). And make it 12 x 24. Wish I could've seen how you tied it into the roof and all. Don't want any leaks. It was my first shed build and now I need more room to work in there. Also...the roofer,..what was on his hammer that held onto the nails as he hammered the roof down towards the end?
@THEpremieroutdoor
@THEpremieroutdoor 4 жыл бұрын
Some hammers come with a slot on top of the head to hold a nail while you set it! Just match your rafters on the existing structure then sheath it and peel back the shingles to tie in the new ones

Hello, not a big fan of the Pat Cam but ok... personally I like when you explain a lot about the structure of what you are building, also you never showed the fly rafters (I think that’s how you called them) Question: are those 2x10 rafters? Great videos... thank you.
@THEpremieroutdoor
@THEpremieroutdoor 4 жыл бұрын
Pat cam was very polarizing lol. The fly rafters are highlighted a bit during one of the time lapses, they are 2x12 rafters. We were planning on 2x8s but the existing structure had trusses so we had to go with something higher to match it up
