It is an awful feeling when you're filling a 12*18 with colored pencil and you're thumbs and wrists are at their wit's end... I always hope the sacrifice is worth it, or I might start having to sacrifice to the devil instead.

I have carpal tunnel in both of my wrists and I can only do minimal coloring with colored pencils at a time. It sucks!

I feel ya, I also worship colored pencils! Specifically Prisamcolor soft core. Something I stumbled upon via the internet that has worked amazingly for me personally is using oil paint thinner (sparingly) on the tip of a paper blender to fill in all the static and blend out the color without over-working the paper/burnishing the surface (much like you would use a paper blender with graphite). It also works for me with shading and blending. This isn't something I came up with, and doubt you need any tips, but I was SO happy when I found this and it worked, so I figured I'd share ❤ It saved my hand/wrist some pain!

Holding the pencil angled parallel to the paper let's you cover more space quickly; also using circular motions will help with seeing the application of the color too ( no more obvious lines). It also helps to not press hard at all and instead build up in layers. Maybe you already know this and I'm sorry if I'm saying stuff you already know ... Before I lost some of the mobility in my hands I used colored pencils a lot; I still do art but use more fluid mediums do I don't have to do those other techniques I mentioned. Your artwork and videos bring a lot of people so much joy - thank you for continuing to add to the art community ❤️

i've gotten some of those tips and i tried to impliment them in this video and i still didn't find much improvement. but i'll continue to try. maybe i'm doing something wrong. Sorry to hear about your hands, but i'm glad you still have ways to be creative! 💜💜💜

I know a tip against wrist pain when using coloured pencils: use coloured pencils in the right way lol. Layering is KEY. All pencils are made to be layered, especially coloured pencils. Pushing hard on your pencil actually flattens the fibres in the paper, which causes that shiny effect + you don't see the beautiful grain of the paper in your drawings. Try drawing with layers next time, also try layering different colours over each other. That's what they're made for.

actually it depends what effect you want. I kinda like when there's no grain and it's a bit shiny. But it does hurt your wrist when you press too hard + your pencils constantly break so it's a waste of pencil.

The final layer you can burnish to get the smooth shiny surface but if you push hard early you won’t have as nice as a blend

admittedly, that's something that takes some time and training to get seared into the muscle memory, though. if you're an intuit artist &/or haven't had your mentor/teacher give you that advice from the beginning, it might be harder to do. cripes, even if you Have been trained to, it can be hard when you're the kind of artist that "just draws" rather than plans it all out from stem to stern. the flows of one's inspiration carries one further some times than forethought can go.

One thing to always remember is to start lightly! Sketch lightly, then lay down your colours lightly and build it up. Helps with the indentations and pain

if you’re having trouble filling in spaces with colored pencil you can try coloring with small circles instead of just a back and forth line :) they work better with some brands more than others so it depends what kind they are but it’s worth a try :)

@@Anna-pj8te what i found worked the best was by just lots of layers. start with using a small amount of pressure and do a light layer then use more pressure for the following layers. oh and use circular motions instead of straight lines. hope this helps!! :))

You can actually protect your wrists from pain while/after using coloured pencils if you work in light layers and don't press down do hard while drawing. And only press down hard on the last layer, if you want that burnishing effect :)

Exactly! They are not markers, so the application and texture are different and multiple light layers are key!

I ended up drawing a butterfly with this box! I really liked layering the white over the yellow! It gave this cool glowy look, so the butterfly almost looked like stained glass by the end. I love that you still tried to draw such a cute character with such earth toned pencils! The eye came out really cool, though. I also found that the paper was curling from the pressure and OMG my wrist and hand ouch!!!

When I first started using colored pencils I was bad for pressing WAY too hard. I can be very heavy handed. I eventually got the hang of having a much lighter hand for the most part. It definitely helps the hands and wrists.

I bought a couple of old scrawler boxes when they put them on sale (£5!!!) And they were so fun! I got a watercolor one, an acrylic one, posca pencils, some watercolor art crayons, and some Pitt pen artist brushes. I really want to get more they are so fun!

When I started coloring, I also used to have pain in my wrists... Then I learned it's all.about not pressing too hard, you have to be patient and building up layers of color ❤️ now I love my colored pencils a lot

I like the different feel your 'animals in sweaters' have when done in coloured pencil. 😊 These pencils made my wrists ache too. Its funny how a minute difference in barrel width from my Polychromos pencils can make such a difference. They broke really easily on me too, but that's because the cores weren't centered on mine (I found they were already broken when I sharpened them and the point just fell out) . The 'raisin' colour seems particularly fragile and mine is nearly gone as I've sharpened it so much.

I use colored pencils alto and as a way to make it easier on the wrist I use a colorless blender to blend and spread the color

i had such a grin at the excitement in the voice at 2:19 "I could literally draw my tiger in a sweat shirrrt!!1!" there was something so pure in that moment of just apparent happiness. to have that feeling for an entire day or even a week... ah me. i'd be burnt to a crisp n worn to a frazzle from all that loose wild happy energy but it'd be worth it!

I find it looks really nice if you colour slower, with a lighter hand (I realise that's sometimes easier said than done) and instead of moving the pencil crayon up and down, do light little circles to fill in the colour. I also like to outline each part with a similar colour marker, I feel like that makes the crayon pop a bit more.

I feel you. In art class my teacher taught me that you have to at least lay down 5 layers of colored pencil to help blend them and bring out their color, and I’m over here getting blisters.

You can also mix colored pencils to get a different color using the 5 layer rule as well

Tip for not breaking the tips of your pencils: use a pencil sharpener with a less steep bevel- you may need to sharpen it a bit more often but you’ll waste way less of the pencil

Take care of your wrists, Rin. I had to have a full joint replacement at age 27 and have now had a total of 6 major surgeries over it. I apparently had a cracked lunate bone that completely died and was black on an MRI. Don't just assume it's only "hurting". You're way to sweet to have a full life of issues. Great work as usual though.

When using colouring pencils try colouring the first layer in one direction then do the second layer going in a different direction, will fill the white bits better

Yes and soft layers, no pushing into the paper.

I've been climbing since early childhood, and I also love drawing and writing, and write mainly by hand. I've always come back to the same exercises and stretches my climbing instructors give us when it comes to wrist warm up/cool down. I've had wrist injuries before and so I always kinda try to make time for that

How are you, Queen? Staying strong? Good to see you still drawing as always. It has been a journey these past few weeks, indeed. Recovering strength after drinking a whole pool of liquor, after diving in it ON PURPOSE, and then drinking a whole pool of Chlorine, ON PURPOSE, as well, can definitely drain you. But I thank Hai Haia, and the heavens for keeping me alive. I've been looking like Spongebob out of the water lately, but I will bounce back. Thank you Rin for continuing to believe in me. It keeps me going.

You're having the wrist problem with colored pencils because you're pressing way too hard on them (proof when you kep breaking the lead). And you feel like you "need" to press really hard for a nice color with colored pencils because you're doing straight strokes when you're coloring, instead of circular motions. Hope it helped :)
