Hi everyone in this video I am preparing for an upcoming art show.
Instead of framing my paintings like I usually do I am instead mounting them to home-made cradled panels and then sealing with cold-wax.
This isn't meant to be a tutorial as I am still trying to work out the kinks of this process but I can create one later or an update video.
Also, this is not a guide on how to safely use power tools, read the safety guidelines on your tools before using them.
Here are some videos on KZfaq and some articles online that go over this process. Most videos I found on the subject use similar processes/materials.
• Mounting and Sealing E...
• How to mount a waterco...
www.insidewatercolor.com/wax-...
Some materials used
1/4 inch plywood
Poplar Wood
Woodglue
nails
staples
Sandpaper
Gesso
Mod Podge (make sure to get the acid free kind)
Gel Medium can also be used instead of Mod Podge, I found that it dried too fast. but I was also working in a super hot garage at the time
Plastic spreader for the glue
Microfiber rags
Dorland's Cold Wax Medium
If you build your Cradled panels yourself you may need access to a table saw, chop saw, nail gun and staple gun

This is so amazing. It looks cool. I never knew we can prepare final watercolor artworks in this way. Great way to display paintings.

this solves the problem of non-glass framed watercolors, very helpful!

Thank you! As always your artwork is beautiful, and I so appreciate your sharing of a way to present your work. The do- it - yourself process was great to watch. You present much info in an amazingly efficient, matter of fact, humble manner! I love watching you and admire your artistry so much.

Love your paintings. I want to do watercolor and your tutorials are so helpful. I hope you will continue to share. I paint with oils, acrylic and have done a couple of water colors but not your style which I like. 💕

Nice work! I do the same thing, but I use Golden Acrylic Medium (regular gel, translucent heavy body) to glue the watercolor paper to the panel instead of Modge Podge. I wax the sides of the panels as well. Good luck at your show!

Yep that was recommended a lot. I tried using an acrylic medium and a gel medium but they dried way too fast but I think it's because it's too hot in my garage. I will try it again in the fall/winter or when I work indoors. Thank you

As always, beautiful paintings! I enjoyed this video showing the process you have developed. I have a question though, since the back of the paper is essentially sealed and not able to “breathe” did you find the paint to react differently? Finally a tip is there is a product by a company called HangZ that allows canvases or panels to lie flat against a wall. Good luck with your show!
@paintedwing

Hmm. No, I didn't find the paint to react much differently, but I have to keep testing things out. Thank you, for your suggestion!

Beautiful paintings, esp in the detailed eyes. Curious why you use both gesso and glue on the boards, and I assume the was is for protecting the art, yes? Is the wax something that must be maintained?
@paintedwing
@paintedwing 7 ай бұрын
I used gesso because it is an acid-free material that I wanted to coat the plywood with in case it contains acids.. the glue itself is also acid-free and might have been enough to prevent future discoloration of the paper but I wanted to be extra careful. I don't think you would need to maintain the wax, it wouldn't hurt to apply more coats in the future, but I don't think it's necessary.

Would you also paint the painting first and then attach it to the prepared board?
@heatherwalton9501

I wondered that too. What happens if the painting doesn’t turn out the way you wanted. Can you remove it easily?
@paintedwing
@paintedwing 11 ай бұрын
Yes, you can. For my larger paintings, I want them to be mounted first because I like how they stretch the paper.
@paintedwing
@paintedwing 11 ай бұрын
I don't think the paper would remove easily. I wouldn't recommend attaching the paper first if you are worried about it not turning out.
