If you've been doing this for awhile, I think it's a good idea to go back through your stuff, organize, and make sure everything is still good. I know that some dates are malleable, but why not refresh your stockpile while you can so your foods are fresh? Take advantage of what's currently available to you.

I’ve been dehydrating like a mad woman for the past couple of weeks. I just finished orange and lemon slices. I love to drop one of the slices and a cup of tea. But I saved all of the orange and lemon peel and I’m making citrus vinegar right now to use for cleaning. I’ve never tried it before but I found the “recipe“ on Mary’s nest and I thought it was worth a shot. I mean, what could go wrong?

I maintain a little "Out-dates" book - a little notebook - the top of each page is titled by month, 12 such pages for each year, (and repeated to last available page in notebook - so depending on the number of pages in the notebook this could be a log covering several years). When I am putting new groceries away I look for the item's BB/Expiry date and turn to that page in the notebook and write the name of that item there. I do this for each item going into storage. To review what I have on hand and ideally should be using sooner rather than later, I look at the page(s) for the current ( or soon coming) month(s) and try to plan my meal-making around those item listed there. Also helps me know what I should be planning to replace soon. I cross off the items I remove or use and eventually I can tear the finished page out of the notebook (once both sides done). I hope I haven't made this sound too complicated. Easier to show than describe. Based on a way of tracking medications and perishable supplies in a clinic I worked in years ago. Computer-free, pencil-and-paper technology. 😄

Black eye peas are great, my favorite bean and so easy to cook! Sure wish I could buy them in bulk. Many beans are more digestible when cooked in a pressure cooker. It destroys the lectins in the beans which is usually what causes the problem. Eden canned beans are cooked this way, but they are very expensive.

In the last 12 years, I lost two cans of dollar store strawberries, they ate through the can and leaked onto the shelf. I left them in the back for too long. That and one pound of brown rice that was given to me, that I lost on the shelf because I don't eat it - it disintegrated right in the bag...turned to powder. I won't be keeping any of that again.

@@elleemann I have boullion about 10 years old just in the plastic jar and have used it recently. It was fine. Boullion is almost pure salt so that must help. I thought because it had fats in it that it would go rancid but hasn't happened yet. As for hardening, just add some of the boiling liquid to it, let it sit awhile and it will break apart easily.

I use a spreadsheet workbook to track my preps. Living in a fairly small apartment (600 sf) with limited storage and periodic inspections, I have to be creative with storage, so a column for location is crucial. As I use, purchase, rotate, relocate or add preps, I update both my computer spreadsheets and the printouts. I update the electronic spreadsheets to a flash drive regularly and reprint about every two months. The hard copies are pretty messy by then! 🙃 I do a physical inventory about every six months, just to keep everything aligned. Unless I have to do a major reorganization in the interim, which occurred frequently during the past two years as I learned what did or did not work for me. Seems to have settled down for now. I'm not much help with food preps. Between personal pickiness, allergies and a body that does not handle some foods well, my choices can be very different than general recommendations. I have introduced some foods my body dislikes as well some I dislike into my diet on a limited basis. Rice and beans make my body very unhappy, but it is handling small, intermittent amounts. I despise oatmeal and cereals in general, but began eating small amounts of oatmeal several times weekly last winter. Still dislike the stuff, but I can eat it! 🙃 Although, since summer has arrived, it's going to be a battle beginning in June when our overnight low temps will zip up to the 90 degrees range! Non-food preps are easier in some ways, more difficult for bulky items. For the most part, I buy things on sale and fill in with DT products when they make sense. Love the Reynolds Wraps (very thin sheets of aluminum foil), DT parchment paper (scorches more easily than Reynolds, so be careful. Works well for about 90% of my needs.), antibiotic ointment, hydrocortisone cream, fabric adhesive bandages. Have not had good results with the sheer or plastic bandages; adhesive does not adhere! I'm sure there are uses for the anti-itch cream, but I found it to be a greasy mess that did nothing. 乁( •_• )ㄏ ...Teale 🏜️

The organization of one’s pantry in on going. I have a shelf area for my need to use first items. I’ll also put a star ⭐️ with my sharpie to give me an extra reminder. I think a selection of vinegar is important too. I keep cleaning vinegar. Canning vinegar in both white and apple cider (stable acidity) Plus my cooking /salad vinegars, red, balsamic, rice, malt, and herb infused that I make. I also am sure to have LIVE CULTURE apple cider vinegar(not for canning, but everything else) I must have at least 7 types of salt 🤷🏼‍♀️ Several types of oils and solid fats in house All in the rotation…..👍🏻 All my basics are in good stead. Being a retired chef, I admit to being heavy in things I truly enjoy. Plus lots of seasonings 👍🏻

My Aunt Mary, now deceased... when she was a little girl, was sent to the corner Piggly Wiggly to get a can of deviled ham for the family. Wouldn't you know she tripped and forgot the exact phrase. By the time she got there, all she could think of to ask for was "hell's beef" .

Good overview. I've begun to store wheat berries in addition to flour. Stores better and longer than flour. With that I also need to get a hand operated flour mill. I want to have more than one way of adapting. That said, I'm so glad to have a large stockpile foundation of precooked canned meats, seafoods, soups, veggies, fruits, chili, beans, etc. It's taken a while but I've gotten comfortable with the understanding that they are safe to eat well/way beyond their expiration dates (provided the container's seal & seams aren't suspected of damage and they have been stored at reasonably consistent moderate temperatures). It makes building an emergency pantry pretty quickly, pretty simple and pretty affordable ... as long as supplies last. The party just might be coming to an end and continuing to expect to be instantly gratified, on demand, on short notice, a luxury that's no longer available. If you can afford it stock up even if only for the short run then build from there when you can.

With your rice and beans and other things what do you use oxygen obsorbers for and what do you not have to worry about using them for? Also with flour and rice I've heard to put in the freezer for 24 to 48 hours and let come back to room temperature before storing. Do you recommend this as well?

Yes, I have found that with the plastic bags that some things come in, especially with the more maleable, softer/ not-crinkly plastic. I had put away some parboiled-rice, icing sugar & other staples in their original bags (because I was too unwell to do much more at that time), and put everything in a new galvanized garbage can to keep things dark, dry, cool & bug free (I had FIRST wiped clean each bag AND the new garbage can with a bleach solution, and let everything air-dry fully before use) . When I thought to check on the stuff a couple of weeks ago, the overwhelming smell was of the plastic bags when I took the lid of the can off. Haven't tried airing or cooking with anything, but HOPE I don't have to throw those things out. So, warning on that. Cheers!

My husband thinks the seals blew outward because of the cans behind bumped or dropped. We don't feel the product is bad, but it is discouraging to order something that expensive and have it arrive with the seal not obviously sealed down. The better insulated things are, the longer they will last. I have an old fridge that is not plugged in for my garage. It houses beans and rice. I rotate through those things, so I doubt anything will be out there for more than five years. Provident Prepper recently had a video about beans stored in different environments long term.

My family likes corned beef that's sold in a can. We like Walmart's brand and the ones we have been buying have a "use before date" of 2026. We use it to make sandwiches, Reuben loaf, corned beef hash.

Is there a way to store the Nido to make it last a bit longer? I can't finish the big can before it spoils. Maybe smaller containers in the fridge or freezer? Powdered buttermilk says to store in the fridge after opening.

I put what I need for immediate use in snack size baggies (they’re cheap) and if I’m not going to be using it for a few weeks, I’ll put it in larger bags with an oxygen absorber.

I have a vacuum sealer with a Pulse function. It's used for liquids in bags; when the air is out of the bag I stop pulsing then push the Seal button and the item is sealed. Nido can be placed in a brown paper bag then vacuum sealed. Doing it that way avoids the vacuum sealer from making powder fly into the sealer and clog the machine.

So... for the milk. I found a recipe for adding fat to non fat milk. I didn't want the Nido because of the soy. My son is 5 and it's not good for him to have such soy rich staples. I found some sunflower lecithin to act as an emulsifier. Nido uses soy. And then refined organic canola oil. I haven't tried it yet but I think that'll work. I drop or two of vanilla can help it along. For a cup start with 6oz of water to make your milk and mix in your 1tsp of sunflower lecithin. Agitate. Then add your vegetable/canola oil. Agitate. Then finish topping it off. Agitate. You can shake the sweet Jesus out of it with a protein powder shaker bottle or blend it up. Let it chill overnight, then mix it again in the morning and it should be good to go.

If you pull out a drawer, there is space all around and behind the drawer. Any space in your fridge or freezer can be used for dry goods as well. You may have a cabinet full but there is still space over those items so always build up until that space is filled or add an additional shelf. Also you can lay flat packages between the mattress and the box springs like pasta sealed in baggies, etc. Worth a try.

And if they are still not really soft after an hour of cooking, simply add baking soda to the water and it will take effect after a few minutes. This is how I outwitted white beans that were 15+ years old. Also works with tough boiled meat, it becomes buttery tender.

I've heard about the whole powdered milk you use and i almost picked it up today but the best use by date for the large can did not seem like something I should buy right now. Can you tell me if this can is un opened does it last longer than the best use by date? How long can I use it after the best use by date? Will it last longer if I refrigerate it? Or if I store it in a better container than the one that it comes in (which I think is very good packaging). I've been prepping for over a year and I'm finding you to be invaluable for the level I'm at and where I'm at in building my supply. Thanks for being here for us. With love, Michigan.
