This video talks about the process of creating a reference computer to use for system imaging. It demonstrates how to use Sysprep to generalize the system and discusses why it is important before capturing a system image. The use of the Default and Public user profiles are also discussed.

Hello, I remained on my hunger. I wish you had setup an image with some software to use on another machine with different hardware. And to see where the image is and what kind of image is it? And how do you install it on the other computer. Also, can the image be used by software like AOMEI Backupper, O&O Disk Image, MiniTool Partition Wizard, Macrium Reflect, Acronis True Image, Paragon Software Hard Disk Manager, etc.? Thank you for sharing.

Great video David. I have a question. Would it save all Microsoft settings as well? Like I have UAC off, security messages off, etc. Would it also save apps that are pinned on the taskbar too?

Yes. The only thing that it removes is the machine specific information.

Hello, nice video but didn't really understand one thing. I bought a new computer and got a windows key from the store but this sysprep window pops up every time i start the computer. I installed all drivers and programs I want. Is there something i have to/should do as a private user now. I am the administrator of my computer but it says "controlled by the organisation" or something like that. Or can I just make this window stop popping up every time i start my computer?

I don't think they sold you a brand new unused computer. If you intend keeping it, you just have to clean install Windows.

do you have to be in audit mode to sysprep a system ? can you uninstall microsoft apps and software ? can you run windows update before ? thanks for answering my questions
@ddaltonyvcc
@ddaltonyvcc 6 ай бұрын
No, you do not have to be in audit mode to sysprep a system. I will usually make all of the changes I want, including the ones you suggested above, while in normal mode and then sysprep. The idea of audit mode is to let you get back into the system to check it out without having it begin building the machine specific information again.

Will this affect the current computer? Like if the clone doesn’t work on the new computer, will it make the current computer not work correctly?
@ddaltonyvcc
@ddaltonyvcc 3 ай бұрын
No. Once the image has be captured, nothing will affect the source computer.

Does it also work for a computer that has been MDM enrolled?
@ddaltonyvcc

That is a great question, I have never used it in that circumstance before. My guess would be that since you are creating a completely new machine identifier when the newly images system boots back up that it probably would not.

So does sysprep create an iso file or something? What does it leave you with?
@ddaltonyvcc
@ddaltonyvcc 8 ай бұрын
No, it does not. After you sysprep the system you will want to boot to an external boot device and then use DISM (or some other tool) to create an image file that can be applied to other systems.

Where can I find the image file, once system is restarted?
@ddaltonyvcc
@ddaltonyvcc 3 жыл бұрын
Sysprep will not create the image. It only preps the system to be imaged. I will typically have the system shutdown once sysprep is finished. That way I can walk away from it and come back to it later. When I come back to it, I will boot the system using a different boot device (DVD or flash drive) with the imaging tool that I want to use. You can use tools from Microsoft like dism or imagex or you can use a third party tool to capture the image. Sysprep is used to make sure that machine specific information isn't included in the image so each new machine deployed with the image will be unique.

@@ddaltonyvcc Thanks for the response David. Do you use DISM right from the sysprep PC after turning it back on - or do you still boot from a different boot device and then run dism tools from the boot device?
@ddaltonyvcc
@ddaltonyvcc 2 жыл бұрын
@@bobray342 Boot from a different device. One common approach is to create a bootable USB and make sure DISM is on it. Then you can run DISM to create an image of the hdd.

After installing everything, Before you do sysprep, install acronis, enable boot option, do sysprep. Shut down. On boot, press f10 ( acronis boot option) Create backup iso. Now you can use this iso.

What is reference image?
@ddaltonyvcc
@ddaltonyvcc 2 жыл бұрын
A reference system is a system that you install and configure to deploy the image to other systems. Let's say you need to install 100 identical computers. You could install each of them individually; install and configure Windows, install required additional software, etc. The problem with this approach is that it is time consuming and error prone. The alternative is to install and configure one computer and then image that and deploy that image on all of the other computers. The problem with this approach is that each Windows install includes some machine specific information and you cannot have two computers with the same machine specific information on the same network. That is where SYSPREP comes in. You build your first computer, run SYSPREP to remove machine specific information, capture an image of the installation, and then deploy that image to the rest of the computes. When they are put in place and turned on, Windows finishes its install to generate the machine specific information each of them needs and they they are all ready to go with the exact same configuration.

He only showed step 1. Step 2 is creating an image. Step 3 is backing up device drivers on the machine you want to set up. Step 4 is restoring the image to that machine.

He really should address that. Because this video ends before many additional steps. He's really assuming people know what's going on. Seems like the video ended prematurely
