Years ago, when I would need to take my husband into a nearby metro area for medical care, I would pack a cooler with food and beverages. One day I took a good look at it, laughed, and said that there was enough for two or three days. In hindsight, it seems like a really good idea.

Definitely a good idea! Especially now with fast food prices so high and cities almost inaccessible with crime. I grew up near NYC and we would take a cooler and snacks in on trips every time, saved us a lot of time and aggravation.

Those are great tips for vehicle trips. Would be especially useful for short-notice evacuations if you had to camp a night or two in your vehicle in a parking lot. When I go camping in the desert, I pay attention to the weather predictions. I would never camp in a dry wash or on a dry lakebed in the desert, especially if heavy rainfall is predicted. And I would not camp in the desert during summer when temperatures are uncomfortably high. Better to go further north or to a higher altitude where the summer temperatures are not so high. Desert camping is great in the winter when temps are mild and the rattlesnakes and scorpions are hibernating. I suspect the many of the people attending Burning Man are not really campers but instead are artists and hedonists who are used to the city life and want a vacation without rules where they can "express" themselves. Such as roaming around naked wearing only body paint and a pair of roller skates. This year it was too cold, wet and muddy for much of that nonsense.

I carry a get home bag in my car with water, food, glowsticks, a flashlight, mylar and wool blanket, rain poncho, hat, bandana, spare socks, comfortable clothes and shoes. If you have ever had to walk a few miles in the rain in dress clothes in the dark you'd understand. Then of course I always carry my boots, basic tools and a first aid kit in my car. I cannot tell you how many times in the last 50 years I've used my tools but it's been alot, for me and others.

Also a fold up knife.l and/or Swiss knife, a small flashlight, matches/lighter, and a candle. Thank you for this great video! Alaska Granny, the Burners are preppers too. Friends of mine put together a camp for 180-200 people at BM every year. Lots of RVs in their group, their camp had huge generators, composting toilets, lots of water and food. If you get a chance to read any of the blogs about the shelter in place weather event the Burners were not stressed out or short of supplies. They are extremely self reliant. The one thing I read over and over is that many Burners had planned on going out to the art installation on the weekend and the weather put a halt to that idea. They say the exodus from BM always looks like the photo we see and it takes hours to get from the event to the highway. I have not read any complaints or heard any horror stories with the exception of how tired their legs got after carrying caked mud around on their shoes. When asked what they would bring more of next year, socks and wipes were the most in demand. As usual the media overdramatizes everything. After loving quiet sports all my life and 30 years in Alaska I have to agree with you. I don’t ever want to go to BM but I love reading what participants have written, especially the people who return year after year.

Once had to evacuate a desert camping trip due to flash floods warning in middle of night. The sand when wet was slippery than Snot!! No way would I be where there is no shade and 70,000 humans!. Teddy is soooo sweet wanting a snuggle hug with his Mom. I love your window car covering. When I travel with my bulldog, I put pillowcase on the inside window to give him shade from East/West sunshine. Great suggestions.

My family went camping when I was a child, and a huge storm came in the night. The campground flooded. A tree fell on a tent and killed a family. Luckily, we left, and had enough money to stay in a hotel. I remember driving back to collect our belongings and little frogs were jumping all over the road, it seemed like millions of them. Thanks for sparking that memory.

I am now ready with the new Nature Valley Savory 'bars'. They don't hold together well, but they are in a sturdy packet. They are not ovely sweet. All I have found are the cheddar and 'everything bagel' flavors, plus cheese and peanut butter crackers. I keep a roll of paper towels in my trun., an umbrella, extra jackets, and a loud safety-colored boonie hat from Dollar Tree, so we can be seen if we need to be out of the car in bad weather or at night. I keep an old tablecloth and a blanket for sitting on the ground.I also have a small throw blanket in a bag in the back seat. Those came in handy when there was flash flooding and our son and his date got stuck in a stream and the unexpected storm drenched the woman. We wrapped her in a blanket. I had ordered a male/female urinal to have at our home just in case someone was unwell, (I already had a bedpan). When looking on Amazon, I found disposable urine bags that can be used by women as well as men and laid those in as well. I put some in my emergency bag, which I take in and out because the heat has been terrible this summer. I always keep an extra pair of shoes in my car. Burning Man? NEVER.

So in my every day car supplies I keep water because I love the desert. And I have some hiking boots in there and a blanket. But I don’t keep everything because there’s too many break-ins but when I am traveling to faraway location, I have a lot more with me. But just to go here in town which can still be whatever to walk, I have to be careful here with the heat you need water people say the water is hot. And I said hot water is better than no water here in the desert. I trade it out periodically. And I have started leaving my hiking boots in there, even though I don’t like these days, but they will broken to my feet. Never buy used boots or shoes.

@@AlaskaGranny well don’t go to San Francisco or LA or any other big towns in California and some of the big cities they’ll break into your trunk. It’s kind of a sad thing what our country is becoming. When I lived in California but I left in 1992. when I lived there $400 was a felony. Now it’s $950 to be a felony otherwise everything’s a misdemeanor and nobody does anything to do anything to help people. Please note when my sister had her window broke. She had a trunk. It was nothing in the trunk. There was nothing in the car but they thought they might be so they broke her window. She was really happy that she was able to get a new window put in the next day hard to fine for her Toyota. Because the very next day it poured for three days. And she’s 50 miles east of LA but it’s everywhere in California.

Those are all great tips, but since Burning Man is typically a nine day event, the overwhelming majority of people there were bringing RVs, vans and trailers and were likely prepped for a week. In other words, they probably had all the things you demonstrated, but didn't anticipate a worst-case scenario. My wife and I each have a get-home bag in our vehicles, supplied for 3 days (and have a lot of the things you showed). Our 6x10 trailer, however, is designed for longer off-grid capability (solar, water, potty, fans, refrigerator, heater). Even so, we are typically only stocked for a week if we had to bug out in an emergency. If we were planning ahead to go to a place (like Burning Man, etc.) we'd of course grab a lot more food and water from our prep supply. Again, not taking away from how helpful your presentation is for those who want to be generally ready for the unexpected. I just think the lessons learned from the Burning Man incident had more to do with not planning well for the longer duration. Such things as paying close attention to the weather forecasts, having little-to-no plan in case roads are impassable (sand, mud, snow), no buffer of food/water supplies (or be good at foraging...which wouldn't have worked at Burning Man), redundant power supplies or fuel. Ultimately, there are the things we plan for (e.g., an intentional trip) and there are the things that come upon us (natural disaster). Although there's overlap, they are essentially two different preps for two different reactions: "I have time" vs "I had no time". Your presentation was geared more toward the latter, and should be viewed by most as preps that enable you to turn a "I had no time" situation into a "this buys me time".

Actually, a lot of people attend for only a few days, and travel in cars with tents, then pay to join groups. If you look at the traffic leaving, nearly all cars, the RV's were too big for the mud.

Lots of good tips! I car camp a lot with a national women’s camping group and use a variation of almost all these ideas! I have a really nice 12v compressor fridge that I just love. A Bluetti solar power station, folding solar panels. A CB is a good thing to have while traveling. I’m too shy to talk on it but you can listen to truckers talk about traffic situations. They went out of fashion for a while but seem to be making a comeback. Possibly more dependable than a cellphone?

We use to have a CB in one of our cars years ago, while traveling, and it was great. We could hear the truckers warning other truckers about the locals, smokey, 4x4 on side of the road, etc. But, we didn't have a handle, so never talked on it. I miss those days of traveling. Not as much traffic on the roads as now, and people were politer in those day.

I believe in portable potties. Actually, I had to have 1300 out houses and that would be a portable potty. But I actually do have a portable potty that I’ve been known to take with me and it sure has come in handy at little different than what you have because it’s the real thing. But if I have to go, I’m gonna pull onto the road open up both doors and put it between. But hopefully I can find a regular one but things do happen. But now that I live down in the lower 48 and there’s so much stuff going in with cars. I live in Arizona it’s not bad but depending where I might go anything they see in a car they wanna break and break a window no reason. My sister was working she lives in California nothing in the car, but they broke her window to find it was nothing in there were stealing. But then she had to get a window fixed, please note I try to stay out of California as much as possible, which is a lot possible. And I only live within less than 10 miles of the California border. But because I carry I avoid that and just stay on the back roads to get south in Arizona. But even my sister says avoid California it’s not safe here. And she is older than I and I’m surprise she still working as a security guard but it’s not that difficult she’s just more like a receptionist telling people which direction to go to which office going to the big cities they want to break in your car is anymore

A sturdy spatula to spread the peanut butter. We also carry an ice chest with sodas in it and plenty of ice. And if I remember the water bottles. I have a small backpack that I also carry when traveling now, that has a few supplies in it, for if we need them, and a couple of water bottles. I use to carry another bag, that was for potty emergencies. It contained a big empty plastic coffee container, toilet paper and disinfectant spray. BLACK ROCK CITY, Nev. - Burning Man attendees fleeing the mud have abandoned everything from stuck cars to unwanted food, junked bikes and stinking bags of trash. While attendees always leave trash and other detritus behind at what is touted as the world's largest Leave No Trace event, longtime Burners say this year appears to be the worst in memory, down to the toilet paper squished into the muck outside portable toilets and the soiled plastic bags people taped to their legs.

No, I do not want to go to something like burning man or anything like that. I love getting out to the mountains. But I don’t go in the winter because of my age and the cold. Does it mean if I drive through that area, I’m gonna be well paired with a heavy sleeping bag in the car just in case. And because of where I live, you can never have enough water with you. So I’m a Fairweather person when it comes to climate. But I do know sometimes you have to go somewhere with the climate is not what I’m used to so I do have the appropriate clothing That is with me even though I might not have it on at the moment it will be with me if I’m going to that particular area because we never know. I just like the people coming from other areas they get here where I live and they get heat, exhaustion, real easy because they don’t sweat. Because it’s so dry. The sweat dissipates so quickly they don’t know they’re sweating. And they get dehydrated immediately. So in my area you need to be very cautious. And not be out in the sun any length of time unless you’re extremely used to it. And you better dress appropriately for our kind of weather. And people need to understand you’re around our area in the heat alcohol is not a good thing. It dehydrate you and you need to be drinking water.

Especially important to prepare for bad weather if you travel. A lot of travel involves crossing mountain passes where you could become stranded or delayed.

Everything that I drive, including my backpacks all have toilet paper. You can never have enough toilet paper with you as a woman. But as far as I’m concerned, we’re going out to Camp or whatever I tell everybody bring a toilet paper. I will share my food, but I will not share my toilet paper and that’s here to.

When it first started, we lived in the sticks in Oregon, and used to see bedraggled individuals and questionable DIY camping vehicles heading down there. A few weeks later they passed through again. Tiny towns and local rangers had problems with people heading that way wanting water and gas because they weren't even prepared for the trip.

My daughter and I could hear my wife all the way out in the parking lot at a rest stop. Amazing how gross some people are.Pro tip, double bag. Bags are cheap. The only thing I can say is "do it" versus "thinking" this is a good idea. I do adjust from time to time based on weather or location. Desert, more water. Winter, more blankets. Even if you just come along an accident you will not feel as useless.

I don’t like being around big crowds of people, especially like what happen there. If someone was reading the weather and they were in a dry lake that couldn’t get lots of water. I’m glad the majority of everybody is safe and finally are getting out. I’m not sure if somebody prepared for this very well. But it was their choice not mine.

While some of that trash and cars were abandoned within the Burning Man site, torn-open garbage bags and other trash litters the side of the road most people take to get home.
