Excellent advice. You are so good to keep the basics coming for those who are just waking up, and to keep the rest of us on target. I see too many new preppers putting themselves online as experts and they just stock boxes of convenience foods on shelves. Thanks for all you do.

Great tips AG. One lady mentioned that she goes to the grocery store with her “list”, however if items are on sale (seasonal), and foods they eat, she won’t buy just one of those items, she’ll buy multiples. She said she quickly added to her pantry at an affordable price.

Another good set of reminders. I don’t recall hearing this discussed…If you store flour to make bread, you need to stock up on baking powder, baking soda, and yeast. Costco sells a vacuum-sealed ‘brick’ of yeast. I transfer the yeast to an air-tight container, and keep it in the freezer. This greatly extends the life of the yeast. FYI, a packet of yeast contains 2 1/4 teaspoons of product. Also, be careful of the water temperature. Adding water (or whatever liquid the recipe calls for) that is too hot will kill your yeast, and your dough will not rise (ask me how I know…🙄). Best to go with warm temperatures in a recipe. Happy baking, everyone!

When I first started watching you, you had a video on putting meal items together so you could easily make a meal without searching for ingredients. With the pasta you mentioned here, it's a good idea to keep a can or bottle of sauce with it. If all is well, you can doctor it up from what's in the kitchen. If there's an emergency, at least you know you've got sauce for the pasta, if nothing else. 😄A lot of the sauces have chunky veg or other items in them, so they're not so bad if that's all you've got.

Hi Granny ! I remember when covid hit, being compromised health wise, I didn’t want to venture out to the store. I would place an order at Walmart (I have 3 to choose from) and go pick it up. Sam’s on occasion too. You could NOT find flour ! Out of stock…. That’s all I heard. So now I have a LOT of flour and wheat berries. We aren’t going to starve if I can help it. I keep forgetting I have a bread machine too, exactly like yours. I need to use it more often. Great tips and reminders in this video ! Love you Granny !! Stay safe and well ❤️

How great to be so well prepared!! I don’t know if Alaska Granny mentioned this, but just a reminder for newcomers out there…if you store wheat berries, you need a special grinder to grind them into flour. Wheat berries will destroy a domestic food processor.

5 years ago we moved from southwest Florida to southwest GA...just for a change, FL natives... When my dad passed a year ago, we needed to move back..mama is 86 and alone... all of our preps went into storage while we waited for a home to be finished for us...hurrican Ian did NOT help the situation...Finally, last week, our house is semi done (enough to move into) I drug over alllll the preps we have bought in the last 9 months (and this is a HUGE kitchen pantry house) ..and then remembered, we have three times as much at the storage unit...was kind of a relaxing feeling. This week husband will be finishing chicken run and duck pen at new place (literally across the street from mama) and starting my new raised beds... We have been dabbling in prep since 2004...it wasnt until 2016 that we went rogue... I hear so many that are worried, that literally let fear keep them down...and can only promise, once you know you have...even a months worth.. stockpiled, your stress level goes down...We are in our 60s and doing it...anyone can ...

We don't really eat rice but once in awhile, but I did buy some extra to put back. Our grocery store has a bulk section and sometimes its cheaper to get the rice in that section. I would buy 1-2 pounds at a time, the same with pinto beans and lentils. I go to a couple of other grocery stores for their weekly deals and depending on price, I will try to buy the limit to stock up. These are all items that we either basically use or will eat.

My husband and I took a five gallon bucket lined with a Mylar bag, filled it with rice and another one with pinto beans. Placed oxygen absorbers in each one then sealed the bags with gorilla tape. Placed the gasketed lids on and then sealed and dated the buckets. We call it our “Last Food” buckets.

The solemn understanding was that the next time we open those buckets, we’ll know that there’s nothing left after it’s gone. The end. We hope we never have to open those buckets! I have lots of good prepper foods stored up, stuff I rotate through and cook with. But those buckets will hopefully be found unopened by our children someday, and they’ll never know what they signified.

Did you know that you can use an iron or hair straightener to seal the Mylar bags? To use the iron you just lay a 2x4 or a wooden cutting board over the bucket and lay the open edge over the wood. Iron the edge quickly and stop when you see it melting together.

Thank you for your video. Since I tend to over prep, .. I'm still trying to rotate through my older home canned goods. I also try to focus rotate with a case of one thing at a time. But that's impossible. I always need something else. As soon as I empty a dozen pints it seems I fill them again. I have ten dozen "in reserve" in case the grid goes down long term and that way I'll have no problem canning up everything in the freezers. By then we'll be going through a lot more pints of preps I bet you. It's great to have options too. I took up a pint of chicken, pork, and meatballs for Mum to choose from and we went with the chicken. I just took three boxes of Ginger Snap Cookies I'm sure are rancid out of storage. So much for rotating those suckers. I'll toss them to the chickens and magically turn them into eggs. Now that's what I call rotation. Yep, rancid. I don't know what gave me the idea they would store well. BUT! It is cookie time again where a take a pack of cookies out of this case of cookies I have and try them, if they are good, they stay, if not, they're eggs. I do believe this is the third year they passed the taste test. They are a brand name that came wrapped in Mylar and I'm pretty surprised. Lets pray the Oolong Tea isn't the same! I've never had Oolong Tea before so how would I know? Well Tea doesn't go rancid thank god, and as far as I know, it's tastes just fine, a little weak maybe. I bought a bunch of 100 bag boxes of this Tea from the discount bin for $1 a piece and vacuumed them up, except for two boxes to try. Now I'm trying, .... Lets just say I'm glad I only paid a dollar a box. 1 cents a teabag, ... Oh, I see the problem, they are only "one cup" tea bags, .. not those fine two cup tea bags I'm used to putting in my two cup mug. I may have used too much water and drowned the poor cup of tea. I'll double up with the next cup but to tell the truth, the Oolong tea gets a little stronger with a good soak. I wouldn't complain too loud if it was all I had to drink. My Flour fell out of rotation for lack of use and I lost 20kg, about $24 "old dollars" eh?"... If I was still doing the baking I was doing back during the Plannedemic Attack, it would have been used up long ago, .. but those days are over it seems and I can't "compete" with this store bought crap that keeps showing up. I tried feeding some of this "off flour" to the chicken but they were not impressed. No problem, they are still selling Flour in the stores and I bet it's "fresh" too! At only double the price! It's a steal! Man, it's been so long since I've bought Flour, .... And it's not a waste to me, as long as I can keep piling it into the front of the pile, whatever the cost, I don't mind losing a little off the back. Does that make sense to anyone other than myself? Besides, I already lost a 10 kg bag of flour a couple of years ago so this time doesn't hurt so bad. This gives me an excuse to open a gallon jar of flour I prepped four years ago with the hopes of getting a five year shelf life out of it, ... well now we'll see. It will either make biscuits, or compost. Well, we lost our internet again and a long as I stay on his page I can write, ... aren't you lucky? I may never be able to comment! You're doubly blessed! Can you imagine? *POOF* Just like that, no internet. Withdrawal is real people. OK, time for a gallon of Flour, ... I may have to "blend" it up some because I really hammered it into those jars I tell you. I was using oxygen absorbers and glass before I was using Mylar bags so who knows? Maybe it worked. And if it was a fail? It was a lesson learned from my pre-Mylar days and beginner prepper desperation. Now I put the Flour into five Gallon Mylar bags and plastic buckets and forget about it. But I'm not getting into that Flour until I can't buy it in the stores anymore. .... right? That's "long term". It's just too bad that "long term" seems to be getting closer every day. The first four jars are full of Rolled Oats, Instant Mashed Potatoes, and Powdered Skim Milk and the first jar after that was dated 6-19, is full of Flour and the vacuum good, ... AAAANNNNDDDD!!!!.... I can't get the lid off, it's like it's welded to the freaking Jar so here goes the boiling hot dishcloth trick. And the boiling dishcloth trick doesn't work, ... welded I tell you welded. I don't want to ruin such a good lid by prying on the thing or hammering on it like "some people" tend to do. What's that saying? Second time is a charm? This time I'll leave it steam a little longer, ... But really, it's nice to see one part of the old prep work. At least I got the seal right. All right, times up! It's obvious that god doesn't want me to open that jar of flour so off I go down to the deep dark for jar number two with the same date of 6-19 and with some effort manage to pop the top and she made the pop too. Another great seal and so far it's passed the sniff test. Now to see how "hard" it is. Not hard at all as I give it a stir in order to pour it into the measuring cup. I hover over the oven. The Biscuits don't look impressive through the stained glass of the oven door. OK, smothered in Butter, here goes nothing, ... Nothing wrong with those biscuits. Well, the Baking Powder could have been a little fresher I suppose. A little stronger. Mum likes her Biscuits to rise so fast and so hard they threaten to tip over. "You know they are good when they do that", she says. Mine hardly did that, but they are edible. IMHO. And I'm the only one I have to please eh? Still no internet but I'm "secure" they tell me,... yeah, secure. Day two with no "internet service" and I still can't post a comment, ... but I can write. Imagine, this could be the last comment I write that never gets posted. I might as well make it a good one eh? The Biscuits made with the flour that was stored in the one gallon jar with oxygen absorbers for over four years are even tastier this morning with Butter and Blueberry jam. Looks like my five year shelf life for Flour worked and that's always a good thing. I now have faith in that Flour I put up in five gallon Mylar Bags and stashed in Buckets. I was "hoping" for a ten year shelf life with that stuff. Who knows? Holy crap, there's the internet. I better post before it's gone again, ... Imagine, two freaking days for one little tiny post, ... Have a great one and good luck.

There will be so much waste if people don't do some long term storage. You can get bugs, it will go stale, it will go bad. Egg noodles will store much longer if properly stored. Putting sugar in plastic zip lock bags before putting in a container. Buying those white plastic food grade buckets, they can hold a lot. Put your coffee, sugar and flour in those buckets. Add a bay leaf to sugar, flour, rice, egg noddle's. Bugs hate bay leaf. Get your cereal, oats, out of cardboard boxes. Thrift stores often have lots of containers for cheap you can use for long term storage. Never throw out your glass jars, all sizes, they are excellent for storage. Put your beans in those jars. Every size will hold something you will need. Many are talking about a Great Depression. This could go on for years. Don't waste food, even if you don't like it, when you're truly hungry things you won't eat today may look good in the future. If not, you can barter with food.

Mylar bags are so easy to use in conjunction with oxygen absorbers. I do store in glass canning jars, reusing lids and vacuum sealing using either the Food Saver jar attachment or a brake vacuum tool from Harbor Freight. No bugs can hatch without oxygen. A heads up, in 2004 I opened some big Tupperware canisters with rice, sugar and beans in them. There were no bugs, but the overwhelming smell of plastic was awful! And these canisters were meant to store food! I threw out everything in the canisters because soaking, rinsing and cooking the beans and rice didn’t remove the smell.

Welcome back! I would get those meals out of the totes, use them, and replace them with fresh sets. That is something I have been doing lately, rotating my foods.

I'd like to be able to do pressure canning but it's a VERY expensive thing. You need a proper pressure cooker that reaches good temperature, you need proper jars etc etc. I would do that if I were already in a proper house that I own. The initial investment would pay off by what I'd save by buying stuff in advance. Not sure if it lasts longer than frozen, though. 🤔

I totally agree!

It will last longer than frozen when the electricity goes out. It's worth the investment; the canning jars are reusable.

How would you suggest I store spaghetti ?

I store it several ways. Break in half, fill mason canning jars. Double wrap to prevent punctures and food saver vacuum seal. I also bought a few plastic banker's boxes and filled those. Any airtight container will work. Store cool, dark, dry.

I have the one gallon jugs of water sitting on my basement floor. Is that OK for storage?

I have read that they can leach things from the concrete. I have laid down a layer of cardboard from broken down shipping boxes. Not sure if that is enough of a barrier.

Agree, put something down on the floor if it is concrete. You can use cardboard, a board, I even have a few extra floor tiles.
