I compared and reviewed the RunningSnail MD-088, Raynic CR1009 Pro, and the Midland ER310 emergency radios. I also compared how well they charge with solar and hand crank. I learned something after testing the radios that surprised me. Finally, I demonstrated using the weather alert warning button during an actual severe thunderstorm.
NOTE: After the testing and posting the video, I decided to see how well they charge my cell phone. After charging up the radios to 100%, I charged my phone with them until the radios stop charging...
Raynic charged 47% of my phone until the radio battery went dead. This radio has a 5,000 mAh battery and it used all of it.
RunningSnail charged 19% of my phone, but the radio continued to work.
Midland charged only 7%. I tested it twice, and the radio continued to work.

Another very good radio is the Eton - Sidekick. The nice thing about this radio is it has the S.A.M.E. Technology which allows you to narrow down the alert area, but it is expensive, and I don't care for the tuning dials. It also tips over a little easier than my other radios. I think it lists for over $120.00, and last time I checked it was $90.00 on Amazon.

This video was helpful in a realistic way. Thank you for running the test like you did. The other day there was a severe enough storm to lose power for 4 hours. And when I grabbed my emergency solar lanterns, my kids had them. Nearly dead. My phone was low battery at the time too. We lost power for 3 days a few years back so I was prepped with matches and candles. Thank god!

Upgraded from my ancient Dynamo & solar Radio and got the Midland 310. I like the ability to power from three sources (sun, crank, & battery), large display and built-in clock. The ability to easily replace the lithium ion battery and to use alkaline batteries means more options for powering the radio. Nice to have in our mountain community that is prone to storm outages.

Nice to see the testing. I would still take the Raynic because of its SW ability. If an EMP happend most likely all domestic radio stations would be gone and only news from other countries may be all that's available. I had recently purchased two of the Midland radios (smaller version) I think it was the E50. It did have the 18650 rechargeable battery so I was glad I found them on sale at Walmart (22$), but I couldn't get a decent AM signal on them inside the house even near a set of large windows. I had purchased a couple radios from a Ross clothing store a year ago and it is also rechargeable and a solar panel, but has multiple Short Wave bands and the AM reception is way better than the Midlands.....was shocked and disappointed so I returned those Midlands. I think the other radios are QFX brand. I put those both in my faraday box.

Thanks for the hand crank test data. That's what I've been looking for. Unfortunately today's "emergency" radios are battery-dependent whereas 20 years ago you could get a mainspring crank radio, cranked up much in the way you wind an old manual watch. Cranking was more efficient, but more importantly the radio would function with no battery involvement. I have a 25 yr old mainspring crank radio that still works, from a company called Freeplay (which is still in business, but which I believe now uses batteries). Apparently mainspring crank radios are no longer made. So much for risk mitigation eh?

The Midland, sadly, is the only one with a replaceable recharging battery, rather than a built in one that would likely be difficult to replace. For that alone, it gets my vote for stay-at-home. LIke you I have the Rainsnail (with a different name) in my go bag due to it being lightweight.

Would be very interested in a radio with the Midland's features PLUS shortwave. Suggestions? Also, they ARE radios. Any comparison on reception? Speaker quality/clarity of signal? Possibly compare same day reception quality on near and far away radio stations on the three radios? Battery life doesn't mean much if the radio can't adequately capture the signal and play it back without distortion and static. New subscriber. Thanks!

I finally stumbled on to your KZfaq evaluation of three different weather, alert, radios fortunately, for me I had already bought the Midland, but all your information was so useful in reassuring me in my purchase. The only downside was that I never had heard a weather alert, radio alarm, and when it went off on three different occasions in the middle of the night, I was clueless, there was no bad weather other than temperatures below freezing. In my deep deep sleep, I thought it was my security alarm so I began troubleshooting The security alarm system to the point of buying new entry door sensors even though the alarms sound nothing alike. Watching your KZfaq video led me to another Midland video that actuated the alarm and there I could hear what a real weather radio alarm sounds like. Mystery solved, and I will finally get a good nights sleep without being interrupted by the alarm why the alarm went off, I don’t know, but going forward I will only turn it on when there are thunderstorms working out there, Thank you so much for your video. I am convinced after watching yours that I made the right purchase
@LoneStarPrepping

Thank you for you comment, but in my video, I did show what the alarm sounds like. You might look into the WR120 NOAA Weather Alert Radio. This has, like many similar radios, S.A.M.E. You can set it up for local alerts only and the kind of weather alert you want. That way you can leave it on all the time.

I've got a GREAT idea for all these Emergency radios: one of the radio bands should be TV audio so while you're sitting there powerless, at least you can listen to your favorite TV shows. EZ to design into these radios and worth every penny while you're sitting there doing nothing IMHO.

@lonestarprepping Thanks so much for taking the time to create this video. I may have missed it, but do you normally leave one of your radios on WX 24/7 so that it will alert you if you are otherwise not monitoring the weather any other way? Or do you rely on your cell phone to alert you and only then turn on your WX radio to get the details? I figured when I get one of these I would plug it into the wall and leave it on (Wx mode) all the time.. Is there anything wrong with that? Thanks!
@LoneStarPrepping

Actually, we have the Midland Weather Alert Radio for monitoring 24/7. It has S.A.M.E., and we have it set for this zip code and tornado only. We are already aware of other weather events from news etc... We bring out the other Midland red radio on WX for other events near us as well, and we listen to AM on it for more weather news. I will be doing a review on that radio as well soon. I have examples of it alerting the recent tornado in Tx.

The 210 doesnt use AA batteries, no dog whistle, and the rechargable battery is smaller ie. 2,000 mAh instead of 2,600 mAh. The ULTRASONIC DOG WHISTLE is used to assist search and rescue teams in locating individuals during an emergency situation.

I have owned the Running snail version, not to be rude, but it sucked really really bad. I ended up buying the Craftsman version, unfortunately they quit selling them. Because of the bad luck I had with the running snail, I would probably go for the midland, because I don't recognize the third brand, to me Midland just has better quality all together. I agree folks should have one of these! Scientific or not, this test makes sense to me. 73 and God Bless.

I agree it is not the best radio out there, but for $15.00, it aint bad, especially if it just going to sit in a bug out bag. If you see my review on them, you will see what I mean. I like it for the price. It also out performs my midland 310 in charging my phone. I talk about that under the description. Curious... how did it "suck" for you? 73
@edwinklaver
@edwinklaver 8 ай бұрын
Mostly because, something was always wrong with it, either the battery wouldn't hold a charge, It wouldn't receive NOAA, too long ago to remember exactly. I bought at least four of these, before giving up on the version, they looked exactly like this one. The final one, I ended up replacing the built in rechargable, with a 18650 and a single battery BMS, but had to remove the solar panel, so that the I would have a place to mount the 18650. Never had a battery problem again! lol. After I bought the Craftsman version, I gave the other one to my Grandson who was just amazed with it. I did watch your review, I was just pointed out my opinion on that one. Yes I know my opinion may seem a little strong on this, but I had a very bad experience with it, and would never put any trust in it again. @@LoneStarPrepping

Pretty sure the Raynic has a single screw battery door on the very bottom that houses the 18650 rechargeable battery for replacement.

Not to mention, the ability to have access to shortwave transmissions could be vital to survival in a bugout scenario. Love the Midland minus that HUGE factor.

I have a couple of emergency radios. One at home and one in the Land Rover. It charges via solar, had a hand crank and can be run off it's built in battery 2000Mah) or AAA. Had an SOS feature, torch and reading lamp , can also be used to part charge a phone. Key with these is to use them now and again if only to cycle the batteries. The one kept at home sits on the windowsill and stays topped up via solar for the most part. For charging from dead the solar panels are a bit of a gimmick but will add some charge over a few days. One other note, if you see the larger 10000mah or 20000mah battery banks with single solar panels on sale don't bother.. they are total crap and will take weeks to charge them.

I think the solar on those radios are mainly for topping off the battery. Example would be leaving in window when using to keep topped off. You are right about using here and there...

@@LoneStarPrepping I am well versed in solar and batteries so know when something is a gimmick or I can at least understand its capability before buying. My old man is based in Texas ( I am UK based) and I have sorted him out with these radios and other battery options for charging kit.

This is Hilarious. I was watching this video and brief mild storm passed over 10 min later I was blacked out (along with over 500,000 other homes) for almost 12hrs. Strange one of the big power stations went off line at the same time and came back online at the same time power came back according to media reports totally unrelated (if you believe that). I live in Australia they are shutting down coal powered Power Stations, Gas has been banned for domestic use in new houses. In Australia we don't need to prep for an attack from a foreign country, civil unrest or a natural disaster, our socialist Greens controlled government is our biggest threat.

The current administration is trying to do the same thing here in the United States. We moved to a home with natural gas from an all electric home and glad we did! I just uploaded a video where we turned the power off for 24 hours. It was so easy to deal with with portable power station and natural gas. We were even able to run our furnace and gas tankless water heater.

someone gave me a crank radio very much like the RunningSnail (and in fact mine was an Eton "Microlink 160"). It was terrible from day 1. The solar charger never worked. The USB connector never worked. Cranking for 3 minutes would get you almost a minute of radio play time. The switch to turn on the radio has become dirty, and it will no longer reliably turn the radio on. I will never consider purchasing a hand crank radio. They are a waste of money.

Sorry to hear you had problems, but 11,400 people, at least, rated the cheapest one a 4.5 on average. For you to conclude that because your one radio had problems, you would never buy ANY crank radio again, after seeing my tests, is a little short sided. If not a crank radio, what radio would you buy for emergencies?

@@LoneStarPrepping The August 2020 derecho in Iowa sealed the fate of a handcrank 'emergency radio' in my eyes. I was without power for 11 days. I didn't touch that crank radio. While internet over cell phone was almost non-existant, we did have sporadic cell phone service. The car radio (even in my tree damaged SUV) was still operable (even though many local radio stations were off the air or on reduced power due to damage to towers, communication lines, lack of backup power, etc. Oddly, my landline telephone was still in operation even though the neighbors to each side of me had no landline telephone. In my opinion, keeping a couple of spare (and charged) batteries around (with the ability to recharge a cell phone or jumpstart a car) is a good idea. A hand crank will only generate a tiny amount of power (and I wonder how long those solar panels will take to recharge a standard 5000mAh cell phone battery? How many cranks of that generator?). In the aftermath of that storm, there were enough resources available to keep the batteries topped off. Finding an open gas station selling fuel was more of a challenge (often involving a 30 minute drive to wait in a line nearly 90 minutes. Every car had not only the car's fuel tank, but also at least one or two extra fuel containers for generators and chainsaws, as a hand crank generator will not supply enough power.). And as for the NWS broadcasts, I often find them to be too late. The bad stuff has already gone down by the time the NWS puts out a warning. Look at a good radar through a mobile app, THAT will help you more. Yup, that storm changed my perspective.

Im not trying to talk you into a crank radio, even though it is a good idea. You do what you think is best, and after an emp hits, I will take my crank radio out of my faraday cage and be able to use it whereas you will have nothing. Good luck with that.

There is no "best" radio for that, but I think the midland radio may be helpful. The weather part is just one feature. However, I think the best is some kind of ham radio. I have videos on this. Keep them in a faraday cage.
