The Perro de Presa Canario, A.K.A. the Canary Mastiff, is a large Molosser-type dog breed originally bred for working livestock. The name of the breed is Spanish, means "Canarian catch dog", and is often shortened to "Presa Canario" or simply "Presa". The breed is sometimes also called Dogo Canario, meaning "Canarian Molosser".a

A Presa is basically a multi-purpose dog: Guard-dog, Hunting-dog, Shepherd, even a fighting dog. From my personal experience with the Presa (I used to own one before it died of old age) I can tell you it was extremely loyal and noble, hell I could even sleep for hours using the dog as a pillow lol and he'd just sleep as well. They have an impressive stamina for their size, impressive strength, the guy from the video is dead on when he says this breed could take down a full ass grown sized man like he is nothing. Their pain tolerance is insane which is good in case you hit your dog with something by accident since they are unfazed by it then there is no risk of being bitten as a natural response from the dog (can't tell you how many times people get bitten by their dogs because they hit them with something by accident). Word of advice though: Be sure that at least one of the owners is around when other people are near the dog, mine was fine as long as one of us was around and if other people came around he even would let them touch him and pat him, BUT the motherfucker would get ready for business if an owner was not near enough which is fine since you don't want to own this breed so it can become fast friends with the first stranger that comes across. Also if you are with friends make sure to remind them not to make gestures which may incite the dog to attack them, so any sort of playfulness which can give the dog the impression your friend is out to get you may end very badly. Also, regardless of what idealistic people say about dogs, this particular breed has a natural tendency to be aggressive toward other dogs, even the same breed, so if you are gonna take a Presa out for a walk make sure you are able to control it, you also need to be very aware of your surroundings to minimise the risk of unwanted outcomes, remember this dog wasn't bred to become fast friends with everybody. There is one thing which I noticed in my particular case and I hope is a rare occurrence with the breed, but it should be said: I did state that as long as an owner was around, they pretty much love to be approached by other people, BUT my dog had this weird tendency to change his body language to "attack-ready"whenever he saw little kids crawling, I never understood why he did this and even a few veterinarians were baffled by this, so this is why I alway tried to keep him away from little kids, not because he didn't like little kids, but because for some bizarre reason he would get jumpy is he saw them crawling. So you also have to be able to read this breed very well to minimise the risk of accidents for yourself, your dog, other dogs and other people. You don't have to be a macho to own one, but you do have to be very aware of your environment, very aware of your dog's body language and have confidence in yourself... again, this dog was not bred to make fast friends. As for his ability to protect you and your loved ones from attacks, rest assured this dog is one tough and scary motherfucker. There aren't many breeds which can stand a chance at actually beating a Presa one on one, most dogs (even if they are the ones who start to get aggressive) will cower in fear before it even gets physical. As for an actual fight (let's hope it never comes to it) and I can tell you from experience that Presas could even take on two Rottweilers at the same time and come up on top with minimal to no damage... and no I didn't pit my Presa in fights, I actually had assholes who thought it very clever to release their dogs on my dog and I wasn't putting up with that kind of shit... thankfully there weren't many of those assholes, but it can happen, hell once an asshole who owned a Pitbull saw my dog from a distance (only his back legs from asshole was standing were visible) and thought it clever to approach to encourage his dog to attack mine, thankfully as soon as he saw my Presa he shitted his pants and turned tail, which prevented both dogs from being hurt unnecessarily. When it comes to humans, mine never had to actually take someone down (thank fuck), but whenever a stranger came into the house, he would STALK them, didn't make a sound, not even a bark, not even a whimper, not a single growl... my guess is that if it ever came down to it, he would never have alerted an intruder to his presence, they would only notice him once he had his jaw on their necks. In the streets I came across assholes without dogs, but who thought themselves either too clever or felt like super man and would taunt my dog by making moves which gave my Presa the impression that they would attack me, my Presa DID NOT like that kind of shit one bit, he would just get between me and the assholes, assume an attack-ready position and thankfully these assholes would shit their pants and cease their foolery. All in all is a lovely breed suited pretty much for every purpose, just remember that this breed can be a pet, but it NOT a toy, always give it its due respect and keep your distance when you see signs that your dog needs it. Also this breed needs large spaces to stretch its legs, so if your home does not have this space, then make sure to take them for a walk often and even if you have a big space for them at home, make sure to take them for a walk from time to time, they quite enjoy it.

MASSIVE COMMENT ABOUT A PRESA I was walking through a field once with my 5 month old German shepherd (girl) And out of the bushes runs a giant, dark presa canario with no collar. He charged right at me, and proceeded to chase my terrified German shepherd round me in circles and having his way with her. He's so big, he's just nudging her with his face and knocking her to the ground. POWERFUL dog. So I'm trying to get us away but also trying to stop this fucking thing from possibly impregnating my dog. Im a big guy, but physically couldn't do a god damn thing about it. I'm sure at this point my dogs probably going to get seriously hurt and I'm probably going to have to fight this thing off as well. So around 12 minutes after it first charges at us and me shouting for anyone to help. (In in the middle of nowhere) It just stops... Lays on the floor and starts being the most incredibly friendly dog I have ever met. He was just horny.

El Perro Presa Canario is an amazing Family fur member. They are great with Children as well , very protective of them and there owners. They are most loyal but can be very territorial. They are very active Pets with great stamina. They need there walks and exercise every day to stimulate there mind to not act out through curious intentions to do something your not going to like! It is very important to stimulate there mind. They require a special diet to not over feed them to make them get bigger in which they will not. Let them be at there ideal weight as it is important for there health. This Dogs are a great pet to have as long as the owner is a well responsible individual. Thank you for reading my post. Thank you Bully Bad Ass Tv for all your input. Until then. Love your Pets. Peace.

yes, he's right, we have a Presa, she was a rescue dog from a puppy mill. What a sweetheart, yes territorial, but she greets everyone with tail wagging and gives them the sniff test. As long as we are happy with the visitors so is she, but she can sense when we are uncomfortable and never takes her eyes off them. Good with kids and other dogs she has met.

If you have one of these breeds, suggestion: don't have any trouble with cops. The sick bastards have been known to go into the owners yard and shoot these dogs. Warrants? We don't need no stinking warrants. All it takes is for some neighbor who's an enemy to call in a complaint against the dog. The cops get away with this lawless behavior since these type of dogs have such a bad public reputation. Pits are easy prey for them - even lovable family companions. The public ignorance and prejudice against some breeds is frightening - lynch mob mentality.

I once saw a man walking down the street with his dog. The dog was huge with a large head, looked like he ate cars for lunch. They walked side by side, no leash, step for step. I knew without a doubt that dog would kill anybody that tried to attack his man. I also knew this dog was in sync with the man. I was in awe and have wondered what kinda dog it was...I think I just found out.

We have one that belongs to my son. He weights 165 lbs. My son brought him to our office when we was 8 weeks. He meets over 10 new people every day. He plays with other dogs and is not aggressive. He seems not to like some people specially if they act suspiciously. Three times a day I take him for a walk. I weigh 155 lbs. King is 2 1/2 years, weights 165 lbs. and is definitely stronger than me. He has knock me off my feet. One time he sprained my back. I was in pain for a week. Every day we get into a war. He wants to walk me. He is very intelligent and seems to know just how far he can push. At times I let him have his way. This gets me in trouble with my son. My son demands complete control. People are either afraid of him or fascinated. He look like a tiger. One time I was walking him. A black Mercedes stops. The back window opens and a nine year old girl jump out the back window runs to King and started hugging and petting him. He gets on his back with his legs up. Her father and mother roll down the front window and informed me they are from the Canary Islands and have a few Presas on their farm. King is a family member.

that's great that he meets so many people. I always thought I'd be unable to socialise one due to not being a social person, but now I have 4 nurses visit me each day, not the same 4 though it varies day to day, so I figured this was a perfect time to get a presa pup cuz it would be learning from day 1 that people coming into our home is a positive experience and those people are not a threat :)

This is a beautiful Presa Canario! I love your knowledgeable video! My son and I were very fortunate to have acquired a rescue that was going to be put down at the vet where he came from, because he looked scary to any would be adopters! My daughters friend actually adopted Elvis to save it him from being put down! Then my daughters friend had to move and could not take Elvis with him, and my son and my took Elvis in to be our own! I wish we knew more about his history? I have a feeling that he may have come from a not so good situation because the molars on one side of his mouth were completely broken half off and it looked as though he had some scarring around his neck and forehead? I am here to say, that this is one of the best dogs I’ve ever owned, other than being stubborn, he was a gentle giant at 92 pounds! He loved all people and children! He did well other dogs, unless more than one dog started to play? He would get upset? Being that we did not know how old he was or what ever he experienced in his past, he would get very upset if people were play fighting, or if more than one dog started to play, that is when he would become upset! I believe this behavior was because he must’ve experienced something and his past that he did not like it when other dogs or people would play fight!? He wanted to be everybody’s friend and was wonderful with children! I really miss my Elvis! As he got older, I could tell that he was either developing arthritis and was beginning to slow down with his gate!? I noticed his hind end becoming weaker! Sadly I unexpectedly lost my son at age 39 who lived with me and took care of Elvis when I had to go out of town because I’m a flight attendant! I was looking for a dog sitter for Elvis for when I had to leave town. A family that I was interviewing to take care of Elvis, had four of their own dogs. Elvis got along with their dogs beautifully, except they had a Corgi, who kept jumping on Elvis and knocking him over. Elvis was having a hard time getting back up to a standing position! The next day he unfortunately, lost the use of his hind legs. I worked with him for one week hoping that he would regain the use of his legs, but he could only walk one or 2 feet and then fall over!😢 I sadly had to make the heart wrenching decision to put him to sleep!😢 I was trying to add a couple of photographs of my Elvis, but I can’t figure out how to do it?

I have owned persa canarios, American bulldogs, dogos and more. I love the breed. They were by far the best guard dogs I have owned. They are amazingly agile for their size. my 130 pound female use to out run my 70 pound female American bulldog. Her size fooled anyone who thought she was slow. But they were also dog aggressive especially my male. Also their pups when they had some. Great breed!

Presa C's and Rotties both incredible dogs. I have both. They are so calm and so dominant that things that disturb most breeds do not cause even an acknowledgement from them. However, in matters of defense of the family, the children, and the property....look out! My god they can be intimidating. As you say, not a first dog or a dog for someone who does not want to pay attention to them. Ours are exercised daily and given lots of tasks to keep their brains active. They can be almost goofy in their playfulness....they love toys. We've gone through dozens of tennis balls because they are so powerful that when they fetch the ball, they often bite it in two. Can be great fun trying to wrestle a tennis ball or anything else out of their mouths. Again, fantastic dogs for an experienced owner!

Great story! As an aside, I live in the country and have been watching dogs chase squirrels for decades. Never did I think they would actually catch them. News flash! Rotties and Presas can catch squirrels! We've had to start chastising them for chasing the squirrels because they were playing with them like a cat plays with a mouse before swallowing them, and it was horrible to watch. Not sure why Rotties and Presas can do this where even speedsters like Border Collies can't, but it's happening. I have a theory that their jaw speed is off the charts....my pups will snatch a fly out of the air as it speeds by, or grab a sandwich off the counter literally in the blink of an eye...much faster than the so-called "faster" breeds (my Rottie stole a sandwich out of my hand last week.....yes I gave him heck, although it was pretty funny).

DaveKtver Our boxer's favorite sport was chasing squirrels. He'd lay low and wait unto one was between two trees, then off he'd go. Most of the time is was game over for the squirrel. The boxer is another fantastic German dog, but they need a lot of attention and exercise or they will do stuff like destroy the inside of your car.

John Techwriter I love Boxers! And yes, that is also the technique our dogs use to nab squirrels, almost cat-like. Although the Rottie cross can also climb trees and has shocked at least one squirrel by following him up the branches. I'm trying to discourage it as a 110 pound Rottie puppy on a bouncy branch 15 feet up will give its owner a coronary.

I have a 1.5 yr old preas male and he is utterly amazing! He's 28 inches at withers and 125lbs. He's an incredibly obedient dog. I could leave a stake on the coffee table and leave for work, come home and it would still be there. One thing I kinda find odd but enjoy is his love for people. He adores anyone that comes over. When he sees a car pull in the driveway he starts barking but when they get out and make their way to the front door he starts wagging his tail. Yes hes full presa lol. I guess the only answer I can come up with as to why he trust and loves everyone is because of all the interactions he's had with lots of different people.

My presa looks good.. He's healthy not overweight. I feed him a raw diet a few times a week. Agile. Loves to run and jump very high. Loves to swim. And NEVER EVER leave your beautiful coconut oil freshly prepared bubble bath unattended. He will jump in. He loves baths. Territorial. Must be supervised with other dogs. He has alpha male issues. I used to own rotti's. But my most beloved rotti died of old age. He shut it down for me. I couldn't get another rotti. Emotionally I could move on. But then I saw a beautiful tan presa at a park. Been hooked every since. Great breed. Although they are very serious about their jobs. These dogs has a sense of humor. They are funny with their ppl. The younger presa loves playing with children. Playing catch. Mines in particular likes to play frisbee. Down side. Stubborn. Destructive if not properly attended. And when they decide they don't like a particular person or animal its a done deal.. Leave it alone.

Whenever I see anything about this breed I think of death of Diane Whipple (January 21, 1968 - January 26, 2001) who was a lacrosse player and college coach. She was killed in a dog attack in San Francisco on January 26, 2001. The dogs involved were two Presa Canarios: a male named Bane and a female named Hera.

@NOVANATIONT2A3
@NOVANATIONT2A3 8 жыл бұрын
+Kosta Kollaras Good question, They're pro's and con's to both. It depends on what you want. I just think on pure intellegence alone the presa outweighs the cane corso. But temperament wise Its Cane Corso. Our presa has really bad dog aggression she had brother in her litter that we had for awhile that we homed temporarily with another family member we brought them back together and she went off on him funny thing is my little cousin has rabbits in the house that she protects like they're her children. We tried to do as much socializing as possible but she doesnt like other dogs. Great family pet and really smart. Out of all the dogs our family has had we never thought we love a dog as much as a rottweiler but the presa is now our favorite with the rottweiler coming in as 1B to the 1A. Cane Corsos are really great protection dogs have a really laid back personality and they can turn on there protection instincts in seconds. They can be stubborn and if you've never had a dog or are limited in training ability they'll get over on you and try to be dominant or lead the "pack" in the house but I love them as well. Not to mention i think the cane corso are just really beautiful dogs the way they are built just make them look regal or like royalty just a really good looking dog when they are "right". You find a right dog with the right temperament and that you're comfortable training socializing and everything either way you cant go wrong. When we had cane corsos they were used as herding dogs on my grandparents farms. Our Cane Corso is more of a pet, protection, house dog. Also important. They both need regular exercise. SORRY THIS IS SO LONG HAHAHA if you have any other questions i can go into more detail id def left some stuff out.

Not trying to start a flame war here but are you sure you're picking true Presa Canario lines from the extinct and wild Perro de Ganado Majorero? You didn't mention anything of that line in the pedigree and that's the sole distinguishing factor from a true Presa and the 'bred-to-look-like-a-Presa, Dogo Canario.' Dogo owners often think they're the same dog and true Presa owners know the difference. The true Presa didn't have a name and wasn't bred for size. It was bred for function and prey drive. It wasn't until the AKC and UKC came along and set an appearance standard in which created the Dogo Canario and it's breeders breeding for the 'look' to meet the set standard. Dogo Canario are often larger, more muscular, more health issues, and less prey drive and less agile because of the breeding for size and look instead of the OG Presa breeding selection for function and prey drive (which the Perro de Ganado Majorero played a major role in.) When I was looking for a true presa I only found a handful of breeders in the world that could trace their pedigree to that bloodline. All others are Dogo Canario bred from a grab bag of mastiff and molosser lines...meaning you have no idea what temperament you're going to get. Just like the 'true' Cane Corso, a true Presa is very hard to find. If you do have a true line, then your "XXL" breeding tactic is completely against the standard of how the dog was originally bred.

well said and I respect any person with a knowledgeable input on the truth of this breed. A lot of people define their dog based on AKC, UKC, and etc, but dog breeds originated in other countries don't. Try FCI people for the tue presa!

Great video and much appreciation on his honesty about this breed not being good for a first time owner. That's the type of breeder you SHOULD be purchasing off of. So many breeders out there try to make a quick buck and sell to just anyone. Inexperienced owners normally euthanize and shelter dogs. Nice to see a responsible breeder out there.
