'Preserving Culture: the Tboli of Mindanao, Philippines,' Part 1. Videography, editing & direction by Alan C Geoghegan.

When I started to live in the Philippines, I went out to seacrh for their real culture. If you ahd listened well to Bao Baay, who is speaking at the beginning, you would have noticed. This tribe has managed to preserve their own culture, which is south east asian. Listen to their chanting, their music, this is not influenced by the Spaniards or the Americans. They have made efforts to revive their culture

Hi Ms Schloer. You mentioned in the video that you were not allowed to write down the Chant because it was too sacred. When I was in college I remember my comparative literature prof also had the same struggle. It was a dilemma to preserve the oral tradition because the elders would not allow the researchers to record or write or the chanting. Eventually, my professor's team had to use a hidden recorder.

Dear Ursula, you were a big part of the T'boli video and I am grateful for that. You are in the video and said something very profound at 2:39 from what a T'boli chanter had said to you: "When the Christians came and money was issued, it became a threat to our wealth because now we are poor!"

What? Preserve their way of living? Your ancestors also lived this way. Do you want to live as if you're in the ancient era, wearing ancient clothes, having no internet, cooking on bonfires like your ancestors? How can you be cruel to this people! They should modernize their way of living like the rest of their countrymen.

@@Republicunt5555 I’m from Mindanao. I’ve been there! They live a modern lifestyle. They have internet and they don’t always dress like that! What I mean is that they should preserve the cultural aspects that made them who they are. Their language, customs and arts. If you’re not Filipino and specifically from Mindanao? You have know idea of what I’m talking about. They’ve been fighting for the survival of their ways ever since migrants (people from Luzon and Visayas) came and claim their lands.

Dear Lydia, thank you for posting this, I miss you too. on the comment of migsluck1, what makes you say that the filipinos have full blown hate? It is true that many refer to spanish as their culture, which sounds ridiculous, but it was ingrained into them by the school system and the church. Not many know about their own culture.

I agree 100% with T'boli people...that urbanization/modernization damages ecosystem and nature. Only rich businessmen can benefit from this situation.

There's similarity of Tboli culture of Mindanao with the Igorots in the Cordilleras. Older generation of women know how to weave both using the loom and the one sitting with feeth stretch and waist is bound and is attached to the strands of thread being weaved. They weaved blankets, 'tela' to be made as 'tapis', 'bahag' or g-string, bags, vest, sweaters, wallets, and many more. Also the beads and gongs. The Igorots of Codilleras are fond of wearing beads as necklace, headress, bracelets, earings, etc. The gong is the number one musical instrument during events. Such cultures in the Philippines are various. But one thing caught my attention they all believed in One Supreme Being whom they worshipped not until the coming of the Spaniard conquistadores wherein they introduced Christianity. Sadly, that RC Christianity introduced other "gods" and idols to whom many Filipinos pray and give their devotions. Makes me teary-eyed to remember the fact that Philippines is like a paradise decades ago. I grew up in the province so i know the interviewees testimonies are true ~ the abundance of natural resources. Yet, bec. of money and greed, the Phils. natural beauty were raped, resources stolen, and the system distorted. Our brother and sisters Tbolis, please continue your advocacy on protecting the environment so that other tribes will follow. Also, continue to play your music bec. it brings a peaceful and joyous feeling to a listener like me. 😊Kudos to this channel and to the presenter!

My lolo is from benguet idk if my lolo is part of the tribe of the igorots in the northern luzon because he never open or talks about his family but i do remember that the kids in the northern luzon are kinda creepy because the alive chicken they thrown it on the bon fire then when it roasted they will eat it the inner organ was still intact and the blood my lolo told me it is normal to kids doing it also the rice wine i forgot the story but its disgusting how they prepared it. Its kinda similar the clothes and the way of living pretty much close in the norther luzon i want to know more about the tribes there.

I think they have, especially the weaving of T'nalak, the Lang Dulay weaving Center in the municipality of Lake Sebu, they teach also to their young how to use the Tribes musical instruments like heglong, kulintang, kumbing etc.
