The President Barry II CB Radio is a nice little radio in the sub £100 bracket. This radio can be modified to expand to 120 channel with alpha channels and retains the FM UK setting which is nice. Power output is not going to win any contests but its not always about output wattage. This is a good, solid, quality radio and well worth a look.
You will have legal obligations in your region with regards to radio transmissions, licensing and power outputs. Expanding a radio may increase its power or frequency range outside of what is legally allowed with or without a license. If you choose to modify your radio then it is done at your own risk. Remember, ignorance is no plea so stay on the right side of the law and double check before proceeding.
You can purchase this radio from various suppliers in the UK, link to Knights below:

I'd love to see a video on how to store enough power to use a burner in a SHTF situation....height is might with antennas, but not everyone has that type of ideal location and when it happens, an alternative way of using extra power when everything goes down could mean life or death. Great video on the modification. Subscribed

Hi Steve, agreed it’s a challenge re the power demands of a burner. A 50W burner plus the radio when transmitting would draw about 6 amps. A 100Ah battery should be able to last 12 hours with this draw. A 200W burner with the same battery 3 hours, 400W around 1.5 hours. The burner would only be needed when transmitting. Height is key with any HF antenna, but as you say, not everyone has this option available to them. I also think that a massive prominent antenna is a negative for preppers as it advertises that there is something of interest here. Ideally being able to hide an antenna as best you can makes most sense but dependant on the location more power may be the only option. It’s an interesting topic and one that most people provision for based on their living location. When in reality, if you live in the basement of a building at the bottom of a Vallee surrounded by other buildings with little option for mounting an antenna up high, increased power will not help a great deal. You don’t want to end up cooking the cat while trying to push enough power to escape the confines of the location and surrounding buildings. In these circumstances maybe a mobile setup would be best running more modest power but from up high when achieved on foot as needed. That is not much use if you’re sheltering from a nuke blast so it depends on the SHTF situation. Thanks for the feedback and for taking the time to comment, very much appreciated. All the best

Thanks for this excellent review and for explaining the mod. Curious that I am I already tried the jumper without cutting the white wire, this didn’t change anything. Looks like the modification requires both. I read on a Russian (used Google translate) site that when you desolder the white wire and place and solder it into the two open contact points next to it, there will be a RF power increase. Not that I am going for this. Don’t care for power. I am looking forward to your (in the near future?) reviews for Midland CB’s, since I also own a 48Pro since some time.

Hi Hans, thanks for the additional information. I did read somewhere that 20W was somehow achievable. I will take a look at the wire at some point in the future once the backlog of President radios are done. Thanks for watching. All the best MJ7NLK

Thank you for the great video!!! What happens if you don't cut the wire but set the jumper to 2-3? Does it have any effect? Thx, Thomas
@NLKMediaGroup
@NLKMediaGroup Жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas, I am not sure as the procedure is to do both. However, once both have been done moving the jumper back puts the restrictions back in place even with the wire remaining cut. It could be that the wire allows more power and the jumper unrestricts the UI but I have not confirmed this. Hope this helps and thanks for watching

Radios are essential for prepping and HF radios are the best for longer range coms in my view. If there is no internet and no working repeaters and cell towers then its old school communications and HF works so well when the propagation conditions are right for over 1K miles. Decent antenna which is well tuned, a SSB capable radio and solar / battery power covers most bases. Maybe a decent handheld like the Malahit DSP2 for scanning and locating which uses little power consumption, a President George 2, Lincoln 2+ or CRT SS6900V, and a power bank station with solar charging (EcoFlow Delta Max Solar or the Pro) would be a good start. You could go wild and look at an Icom IC-705 and mars mod it to allow 11 meter transmit, that would be the absolute best radio option but pricey. There are so many options out there and anything is better than nothing but as always it come down to budget. Thanks for watching and for commenting. Its a very interesting subject which I often think about. All the best MJ7NLK

thanks for the video, i did what I saw here on the radio.i would have a question, which is the middle of the band A, B, C? which is the band where channel 40 is 27 405 mhz
@NLKMediaGroup
@NLKMediaGroup 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Juszuf, The mid band frequencies are in EU mode (channel 20) A = 27.205, B = 27.655, C = 26.755 and in PL mode (channel 20) A=27.200, B=27.650, C=26.750. If you want channel 40 to be 27.405 then you need EU mode and band block A. In EU mode Channel 40, A=27.405. You can see the entire channel listing for all expanded modes in my other video for the "President Teddy II" and that has a on screen table with all frequencies, channels and band blocks. All the very best and thanks for watching. ps. sorry for the delay in responding, have been down with COVID but am now back and well again.

hello when i connect my cb radio to a 13.8 mains power supply it is transmitting a humming nois why can you help kind regards
@NLKMediaGroup
@NLKMediaGroup 11 ай бұрын
Hi, over vaultage can cause a humming noise but 13V should be fine. Poor earthing worth checking. Depends on the radio but should be looked into further. Make sure you have a fuse between PSU and radio just in case. If the buzzing is coming from the speaker then it could be down to a poor quality PSU. Difficult to diagnose without seeing the radio. All the best and thanks for watching.

Hi Richard, sorry for the delay in responding, am a little behind on comments. To change the frequency band mode on the radio, turn it off, press and hold the F key and turn the radio on. then release the F key and use the up and down arrows to change to U and press and hold the F key again until it flashes. Then turn the radio off and its in UK mode. I hope this helps and thanks for watching. Happy new year and all the best for 2024

Hi Dean, you can see the Wire and Jumper at 15:43 (the jumper is next to the wire). You can also see the image on screen at 15:50 with arrows showing the jumper and the position. Standard it covers 1+2 and to expand its 2+3. Please ensure you check your region on the legalities as mentioned in the video. There is also a second Barry 2 video on my channel with how to use the service menu to adjust the power settings in both standard and expanded modes. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.

Hi is doing this mod dangerous in anyway please ?
@NLKMediaGroup
@NLKMediaGroup 3 ай бұрын
The mods are built into the radios and the software. They are intended to be expanded in certain regions where its legal to do so. Just be careful in the factory services menu as you could de-tune the radio if messing around with settings but if you stick to just power adjustment then all will be well and remember to write down your factory calibrated settings just in case you need to revert. All the best and thanks for watching. MJ7NLK
