President Carter speaks to Americans about the "crisis of confidence" in American government, values, and way of life, as the public expresses doubt in a better future for their own children. Carter challenges citizens to unite and address the problems in America by first addressing the energy shortage.

Just read that he has decided to forego further treatment and has decided on in-home hospice care. When I was 12 years old I got to shake his hand in Los Angeles. I’ll never forget it. He is a decent man. It’s good to see his face, and hear his voice. These are such difficult times in which we live. Life seems to have been so much simpler back then. But perhaps I’m idealizing the past, as one is prone to do.

This was the last time an American President leveled with his people, talking to them as real adults, not just little children. Carter decided to tell the truth even if it risked losing him a 2nd term, and I respect him for that. Everything he said was true. I don't care if he didn't sugarcoat things the way the American people insist their Presidents do.

@@brianskinner5212 now ignore that line and look at the truths of when he was speaking of American values. Where American values switched from hard work, and unity of purpose to search for a greater future, to becoming a self-indulgent and consumption obsessed culture. He was stating renew the spirit of American values and create of purpose of unity to work together a combat these issues. People were distancing themselves from government which was posing a threat to our republic democracy. And how self-indulgence will never satisfy our longing for meaning. This was his response to the media and Americans losing confidence for the future. The confidence is what created America. The confidence in searching for a greater future for our children was lost along with the unity of purpose. America was built on the sole foundation of people who had a unity of purpose to search for something greater, aka freedom and worked together to combat the issue . So instead of doubting about the future, Shift that energy into creating a unity of purpose to work hard and search for a greater future for our children. But people didn’t want to hear that because it was true, society was built on consumption, human identity was defined and valued by what we own, not what we do. That is why there was a loss of unity of purpose to search for a greater future. They didn’t want to hear the criticism of how self indulgence and overconsumption had led people to value their lives by what they own rather than whAt they do for society and what purpose they serve so the people continue to doubt the future rather put their value and purpose in searching for a greater future. But people were just separating themselves further from government rather than creating a unity of purpose to combat these issues and create a better future. Now he was one of the worst presidents but he provides some truths about American society needing to change in order to progress.

I agree! I studied his presidency very intensely, and he was more naive than anything else. Another problem was his two closest advisors (Vance and Breszinsky) wanted him to pursue polar opposites in terms of policy relating to energy, the economy and foreign policy. He would often accept alternate suggestions from them, which made his policy-making seem indecisive and contradictory. He meant well, but was not cut out for the presidency.

While I don't agree with President Carter's religious views (*I'm an atheist*), I admire him for actually striving to be like Jesus Christ. Unlike so many Southern evangelicals today, Carter has actually been Christ-like by treating everybody, no matter their race, sex, sexual orientation, religion (or lack thereof), etc., with love, tolerance, and respect. Unfortunately, a lot of today's Southern evangelicals thrive on hatred and disgust for anyone not exactly like them. Carter was and is a man ahead of his time, and he will certainly be missed and remembered for generations as one of the greatest ex-presidents and one of the greatest humanitarians of all time long after he's gone.

He was honest? The dude is saying that we should all just put up with the mess he made. We just shouldn't be so materialistic and be angry that he made Americans more poor. We should just walk more because gas is so expensive. Thankfully Reagan FIXED all of those problems, so Americans didn't have to be poor, cold, and walk to work.
@zxbc1
@zxbc1 2 жыл бұрын
@@marissashantez6051 Actually what you said is patently untrue. US consumer prices kept on rising during all of Reagan's years at about the same speed as they did during Carter years, despite oil price crashing. Real wages stagnated even as productivity and GDP rose dramatically (a result of aggressive QE). Reagan fixed nothing, but rather started a new school of economics and politics that would create the following disasters that rippled through American society for the next 40 years and counting: 1) weakened unions and labor laws, making US workforce dramatically less competitive in the world, 2) made the American public dumber through cuts to public education, 3) made Americans sicker through subsidies to big pharma and the insurance industries, 4) severely crippled corporate regulations and resulted in the monopolization of virtually all major industrial sectors and media and entertainment, 5) ushered in the Christian evangelical movements and made a clear violation to the separation of church and state, fostered the form of religious fundamentalism that fueled today's most regressive social attitudes, 6) committed nonstop atrocities all over the world by funding insurgent militant groups to assassinate and disappear prominent nationalist movement leaders everywhere, toppling democratically elected governments and supported dictators that are pro-US, 7) started "war on drugs" that turned the US into a police state and the prison labor industrial complex into a de facto modern slave economy, 8) funded religious fundamentalism in the middle east and Asia where it suits US short term interests (such as opposing USSR), resulting in major blowback in the form of Islamist terrorism that killed thousands of American civilians and soldiers, 9) despised the rule of law and the constitution, administered over a government that was knee deep in multiple major scandals in American history that resulted in over 130 officials criminally indicted, charged or sentenced, and nearly all of which commuted or pardoned or have sentences shortened or eliminated at the end of his crony successor, and 10) started the "deficit spending" culture that saw US debt double by the end of his term, and nearly quadruple near his successor's term. Yeah Reagan really fixed everything, if fixing means destroying. We're still reeling from Reaganomics 40 some years later and some damages might be permanent. In popular cultures now he is remembered as the destroyer of USSR, but in the history books years down the line he might very well be remembered as the destroyer of USA.

This guy was right on the money back then about what was going on and how we had to do something. And as for those who criticize him I say this: The upturn in the economy had its roots in programs Carter already had implement at the end of his presidency but Reagan got the praise for them when they came into effect. And let's not forget that Reagan's "steroid injection" economy led to the infamous 1987 Black Monday stock market crash. As for the Iranian hostage crisis. Was he supposed to do what the masses wanted? Start a large scale invasion of Iran? Did people forget Vietnam that fast?? And to start a war right in the middle of an economic recession? To do what? Installing another vassal king like the Shah who nobody liked anymore in Iran? To all those who claim:"Reagan ended the Soviet Union. False. The Soviet Union ended the Soviet Union. It was already in serious economic trouble by the mid 70's and economic experts in 1979 predicted it would last another 10 years before it would collapse. It was going down with or without Reagan. The whole system was rotten to the core simply couldn't sustain itself. Gorbachev's reforms were simply "too little, too late". History will record that those years were a crossroads for America and they choose the sign reading "the easy path".

@Srd1126 Under Reagan, the stock market boomed, the real economy, wages, unemployment, that kind of thing was not going well. What boom there was was fueled by massive borrowing, the "spend but don't tax" and "deficits don't matter" approach, for which we are paying for today. And the Soviet Union collapsed under the weight of its own system, exacerbated by Afghanistan, Chernobyl and a suicidal arms race that it was having with the US.
