Listening for the first time with 21st century ears and and shortly after the death of the queen. I have to say, it s nice to hear such kind words about my country. You don't hear things like this very often anymore.

I remember this vaguely as a child watching it on American Tv. After having had met the Queen many years later in the UK I would had never known. Now that she has passed this document has more meaning than ever to me. Ronnie was always reading the script statesman beautifully. Whether he fulfilled anything or not, he was very professional and earnestly suave. The late Queen younger here yet older, brought strong remember the dead Postwar widow tones as usual in her speech. It had a chilling effect and one suddenly saw the spectre of a soldier and Holocaust ghost parade in the room. Indeed the late Queen enjoyed endlessly bring up the War literally working it into every public appearance with world leaders in tone. It was a real mood killer and sort of brought tears. As weird as this state visit was, the video here of the two is an utterly fascinating diplomatic document.

After watching The Crown (of course) it is a pleasure to pay attention to a moment which, while I was living in Northern California in San Jose at this time in 1983, I gave little attention to or thought much about. As a teenager, history was merely another subject which while interesting, lacked contextual perspective. Watching this now, I am struck by the warmth expressed between these two leaders, and how our relationship was not only bound by shared values and mutuality of concerns, but regard for what each country fundamentally represents and how they have influenced each other.

In his toast, Pres. Reagan refers to the opening on the UN in San Francisco. My Mom, who's still with us, participated at the opening of the UN in San Francisco in 1945. She met several world leaders including King Faisal. Along with one million other people, my Mom also celebrated VJ day on Market St. My mother is an encyclopedia of knowledge about her native city of San Francisco -- one of the most beautiful and cultured cities in the world.

@@ColdBaltBlue 180,000 from a virus that he didn't create? No where near the hate I feel when contemplating how many were murdered by Obama with his new wars in Syria and Libya, or the amount murdered by Bush during Iraq and Afghanistan, or the amount murdered by Clinton in Balkans, or the amount of people killed by Bush Sr. in Iraq and Afghanistan (he was CIA director when we supported the Afghan Mujahideen). Out of all the presidents I've lived through, he's yet to start any new wars. I like to keep things in perspective, not get all hyped 'cause the media and sheeople are easily swayed. Bush Jr. declared "Mission Accomplished" in regards to Iraq, many made fun of him, because it was far from over. Obama declared The War on Terror over, yet hardly anyone collectively spoke out against him. This nation is conditioned to view Republicans as aggressive and controlling, and the Democrats are passive and liberal, yet regardless of President, we continue down the same path of needless wars and non-sense. (NOTE: I did not vote for Trump, nor plan to, as the 12th Amendment makes our popular vote a suggestion. I just write in "Constitutional Republic, as that is the form of governance we are to be, not the Democracy we are lied to, nor the Corporate Oligarchy that we've become.)

I remember this evening well, as QEII's motorcade momentarily came to a stop before us as we stood on the sidewalk near her hotel (the St. Francis) - suddenly she was close up (4 ft. away) and staring into our eyes, poker-faced (for about 30 seconds), through the clear unsmoked glass of her halted cream-colored Rolls Royce (we were the first people she encountered after exiting the hotel's carriage entrance). The experience was wonderfully intimidating and thoroughly awesome, as you can imagine, and one of the most memorable moments of my life!

The beautiful and historic De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park was badly damaged by the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. The damage was so severe that the building was declared unsafe and was eventually demolished. It was replaced by a new copper-clad building which is quite an architectural masterpiece. For those visiting SF, be sure to take the elevator to the top of the tower at the new museum. There is a spectacular view of the City and the Golden Gate bridge.

That's Sec. of State George Schultz and his wife sitting next to the Queen and Pres. Reagan, respectively. Schultz is still going strong at age 98! He's now an active member of San Francisco society, having married Charlotte Maillard Swig who has been the City's chief of protocol for decades.

"Mr President, I raise my glass to you and to Mrs Reagan...." imagine what Jack and Nelle Reagan would have thought, if they could have seen this moment when the Queen of England toasted their son, back when Dutch was a boy.

Sir, you are a class act and you remarks are very astute. President Reagan must be thrilled that his mistakes and but yet his legacy is being carried on by our beloved POTUS who learned from Reagan's ideas and is correcting his mistake of trusting Democrats to close the border if he let the illegals stay.

I'm sure the toasts are accompanied by wonderful California sparkling wine. Pres. Reagan always made sure to have CA wines on special occasions. Pres. Reagan toasted Mikhail Gorbachev with Iron Horse sparkling wine (champagne) at Reykjavik. To this day, Iron Horse winery (Sonoma County) has a Russian cuvee to commemorate the occasion.** ** On 11 October 1986, Gorbachev and Reagan met at Höfði house in Reykjavík, Iceland, to discuss reducing intermediate-range nuclear weapons in Europe. To the immense surprise of both men's advisers, the two agreed in principle to removing INF systems from Europe and to equal global limits of 100 INF missile warheads. They also essentially agreed in principle to eliminate all nuclear weapons in 10 years (by 1996), instead of by the year 2000 as in Gorbachev's original outline.

The most embarrassing moment with an American president was when Jimmy Carter kissed the Queen Mother on the lips. No one had done that, not even her own grandsons, since the death of the king decades earlier.
