(1 Oct 1956) President Somoza of Nicaragua, (who was recently host to the US Vice President, Nixon) was the victim of a would-be assassin's bullets. The assailant was killed on the spot. President Somoza was gravely wounded.

Steve Jefferson of course is not a Nicaraguan, I'm a Nicaraguan, I'm a descendant of Captain Alonso Diaz of Mayorga one of the founders of the nation. My grand father was born in 1906 and used to tell me stories of the sad way the country was during the conservative governments; the discrimination of the poor, the lack of opportunities for them, the bad educational system, communication roads, etc. General Somoza Garcia worked to change the country brought progress, peace, work to the people, education and opportunities for all.

Somoza was a puppet for the US and did NOTHING good for Nicaragua.

Somoza was a puppet for the US. He brought imperialism into Nicaragua. Instead of democratic elections, he opted for a full dictatorship only to create an eco system for him and his family yet kept thousands of Nicaraguans illiterate without any access to medicines or basic human needs in the campos.

The SOmoza era reminds of death, pestilence, assasination, millioneires travelling to Miami for holidays, extreme poverty, shanty towns,no electricity, no water, no services, I remember seen the newspapers with pictures of people killed by the National Guard which also was in charge of bribery and prostitution, I remember my dad with no employment, days of hunger. The Oligarch very rich and the rest of the population in the street...very sad

Steve Jefferson read too much La Prensa the newspaper of the Chamorros the Oligarchy of Nicaragua enemies of the Somoza family. The first president of the country was Fruto Chamorro this man stablished an authoritarian political culture that still persist, racism, social discrimination, corruption and opportunism. In the second half of XIX century President Pedro Joaquin Chamorro Alfaro confiscated their ancestral land to the Matagalpa indigenous people just to give it to German immigrants, the indigenous protested, Chamorro massacred them with the army. General and President Emiliano Chamorro this mas gave a coup in 1926 to President Carlos Jose Solorzano elected by the people of Nicaragua. In 1959 Pedro Joaquin Chamorro launched an intent of revolution against president Luis Somoza Debayle elected by the people in democratic elections, Chamorro asked for help to Fidel Castro the Cuban despot helped with some rifles, the people of Nicaragua reacted against Chamorro who ended in jail and later got a pardon from president Luis Somoza. The Somoza Family has given the best of them selves to the people of Nicaragua, we still remember.

@ When Somoza was president Nicaragua was a safe country. The economy was good, people worked and lived a comfortable safe life. Nicaragua was doing great!! As soon as the thug of ortega became president. The economy collapsed, the poverty rate increased. During these past 40 yrs the thug of ortega has been in power. ALL YOU SEE IS POVERTY ALL AROUND YOU! HEARTBREAKING to see. If you took a trip to Nicaragua today, you see children as young as 2,3,4 yrs old in the streets begging for food or money. Families are homeless sleeping in the streets because they can't find jobs. The moment you leave the airport poverty surrounds you. Today's Nicaragua looks sad, heartbreaking, and horrible all because of a thug and his family!!! TRUE STORY GO SEE FOR YOURSELF!!!
