Still trying to understand how audio dynamic compressors work? Here are instructions on how to set up the Scope in Studio One so you can SEE what the compressor is doing to, for example, a bass drum beat. This helped me understand the relationship between the original signal and different compressor attack/release times.

This is great! First video I’ve seen of yours: Would have loved this 10-15 years ago before I wasted I don’t know how much time watching KZfaq videos and rearing forums back in the day everyone would just tell you, “Use your ears!”. Lol. I’ve actually thought about developing a compressor plug-in that had a visualizer that really showed you where and how your signal was behind affected at each transient, but just never set aside the time. Nowadays, I’m pretty familiar with the ends and outs of it, although especially with some of these plugins modeled after old analog gear that don’t have a great UI or clear indicator ranges on the settings, I still can second guess myself if something feels off. Haha. So even now, this type of thing is very useful. Good job.

Thank you. Yeah, something about compressors is intimidating, or seems harder than it is. Part of it is poor explanations, which initially resulted in me thinking attack and release where how long it took the compressor to turn full on or full off after passing a threshold; whereas, really it's a more of a slope between full on and full off. And you're right, the classic "Use your ears" doesn't help when you're not sure what you're hearing or supposed to be listening for. First you have to understand WHAT you're hearing THEN you can use your ears. Thanks again.

I'm so impressed with the idea of using a Scope with a Compressor. I didn't know that I could use a Sidechain on Scope. If you don't mind, can I make a video about this technique on my channel and post it? I want to make Korean version of this video. Of course I will note the source of the idea and include a link... Thank you.!

You probably should use your hearing in relation to compression

You're right, your ears should always be the final judge. The purpose of this video is to help beginners get beyond the mystery and intimidation of compressors. Even though many beginners may understand what threshold, attack & release are, the challenge is in understanding what a 10ms attack vs. a 20ms setting do in relation to, for example, a snare hit. My hope is that this video encourages new users to play with their DAW in general, and in particular play with a compressor and use their eyes to help them understand what they are hearing as they experiment with different settings. Then, when mixing using their ears only, they'll have a better sense of what to listen for when adjusting a compressor.
