I think this loopback test should be implemented built-in as a simple dedicated button in the DAW. The fact so many people don't know this is reason enough that a DAW maker should guide the user to make this adjustment as part of a midi track or audio setup. Make it as easy as possible next to the input and outputs of a track. Show the delay compensation number and allow the user to disable it if needed but make it standard. The DAW would just send a predetermined pulse to a known input and output then show a suggested delay compensation value. Place it next to the input and output of the track. No digging through menus. No setting up of separate tracks and no separate plugins. Just a dedicated button. You press it, the DAW asks what's your in and what's your out? Go

For anyone who references this video or similar by MH. I messed with these procedures today. I had a hard time getting the interface loop enabled but figured it out and set the Record Offset. On to the Midi Offset, it took me a head scratch or two but upon turning Input Quantize OFF I was able to successfully add a working Midi Offset. Just sharing, maybe save someone else a bit of time/ frustration.

Don't forget that if you change the device block size in Audio Setup > Audio Device this operation should be done again. But Studio one unlike other daws I used in the past, doesn't necessarily need to have its device block size to be tweaked depending on the session...

I do like this video very much, I just wish you would have went over this entirely with your audio interface step by step, also what instrument you use on that loopback channel. Details like that were left out and for me it's to much info missing for me to completely understand and demo this work... @@bertgonz5649 this comment is from Michael Cirillo 2 months ago Loopback Test (Audio) Download the Loopback test file here (can’t put link in here you can find it on the presonus.com site under the descriptions for this tutorial). Take a cable and connect a free output on your Audio Interface to a free input. Make sure you add this input and output in your Audio I/O Setup as well (found in the menu Song -> Song Setup). Open up the Track Inspector (F4 key) and select Track 1 (“Test Sine”). Assign the Interface output you’ve connected with the cable as the Channel Output. Select Track 2 (“Loopback”) and assign the Interface input you’ve connected with the jack as the Channel Input. Ensure that monitoring (the blue speaker symbol) is off on both channels and enable recording (the red button next to monitoring) for Track 2 (“Loopback”). Start recording by clicking the Record Button in the Transport Bar. Set your Transport Bar’s timeline from bars to samples (with right click) and measure the difference between the first Transient on Track 1 and Track 2 by using the tab key. Go to Studio One -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Audio and enter the difference amount in the Record Offset field. IMPORTANT: Unlike in most DAWs, you only have to do this test once in Studio One, because you should never need to adjust your Audio Device block size. You only increase your Dropout Protection block size if the CPU runs out of power, which doesn’t affect the Record Offset.

Amazing... just a few quick tips on this after going through it: I would go in and manage your song inputs and outputs in Studio One on this test file to simplify your routing. There's a bunch of fluff in there. Also, be careful about feedback as I had auto-monitor on and accidentally blasted my ears w/ a feedback loop as I was getting things set up. Fantastic guide though! Thanks Gregor. Interesting! However, this did not work for me . I have a Volt 2, did the loop back . My reading as follows 88200 (Test) 88268 (Recording), So my recorded wave was later by -68 sample? Actually no! I thought I was going nuts, but the actual audio offset ended up as -114 samples and its now bang on. This exercise put me in the right direction, but I'm somewhat confused at the required offset. Also found the tab to transient feature was not working as should for me. I have to be honest I've stuck with S1 18 months now, but Im starting to tire of these constant issues. Its great having new features but lets get the core things sorted. If you use the car analogy. No one wants a vehicle that breaks down every 5 minutes, irrespective of its billed features.

No wav playback even though I can hear it through the headphone output just fine.

Thank you. I should add that you probably should watch the gain on the input. I couldn't get it to work until i lowered the gain. If it's too loud it's like no sound is made (for some reason). I would also note that the sample difference seems to change with the gain level, and whether or not the line or monitoring buttons are pressed.

Here are detailed instructions for setting up Duet from Admin (Apogee Electronics) Dec 30, 3:28 PM PST Hi, Make sure Duet isn't connected to speakers and then if you follow these steps in order, it should work: 1. Connect Duet and launch Apogee Maestro. 2. In Apogee Maestro's 'Output' tab, click the dropdown menu by the main output level knob (speaker icon) and select 'Output 3-4' or 'Line 3-4' (I can't remember what it's called). 3. Turn the main output up all the way to 0. 4. In Maestro's 'Input' tab, set the Analog Level of input 1 to 'Mic' and turn the gain down to 0. 5. Connect a balanced TRS 1/4" to Male XLR cable from the Left output connect of your Duet's breakout cable to the XLR connector of Input 1 on the breakout cable. 6. Set the 1st track in Studio One (the one with the pulse already on it) so it's output is going to 'Output 3' or 'Line 3' (whatever it's called). If it's a stereo track, set it to 'Output 3-4' and then just hard-pan it all the way left. 7. Set the 2nd track in Studio One (the one you're going to re-record the pulse) to Input 1 (or 'Mic 1'- whatever it's called). Make sure it's output is either going nowhere or at least NOT going to Output 3-4. 8. Loop the section of the session that has the pulse and look at the meters on Duet- the meter for Input 1 should be showing a similar level as the meter for Output 3. If it's considerably lower in level, then go to the Output tab in Maestro and double-check that you turned up the main output all the way to 0. If it's still too low, go to the Input tab and gradually raise the gain for Input 1 until the level matches that of Output 3. 9. Once your levels are close, record the pulse onto the new track and then compare to the original pulse on track 1. Best Regards, Team Apogee Support

I give up. I cannot make a loopback test with AudioBox USB 96. I don't have Line Out like in the video, so I tried different options Main Out L -> Input 1; Headphones -> Input 1 with different knobs configurations. I'm scared of damaging a device because when I plugged it for a second I saw that there are a lot of noisy distortions (Clip diode just horribly blinking). I tried to find any information how to setup this loopback test with USB 96, but I didn't find. If you know how to do it properly, help please.

What about those of us who don’t record audio, don’t use an interface, and work strictly with VST’s? Why should we have to record an audio track to determine an offset for something we’re never going to use just to get the metronome to sync properly? I didn’t have to do this in any of my other DAW’s I use. I record strictly midi, and even if my timing is almost spot on, the midi data recorded always shows each note recorded way ahead of where it should be, and upon playback the midi doesn’t sync (audibly) as it was recorded with the metronome. My latency is fine for real-time play of my VST’s.., no issues there. Everything gets thrown out of sync when recording with the metronome or even a self generated midi click track.

Hi Gregor, what should you do if the recorded midi notes are hovering around the note? Like sometimes 4 ms late, sometimes 2 ms early, and everything in between?

For anyone who has this as well. Someone told me that if your audio interface is USB powered, this can happen because the power supply is instable. I am getting an interface that is wall plug powered and see if it helps.

Hey Gregor - great video and tutorial! is there a way in studio one (version 5) to add an input delay/latency on just one channel at a time? for example if i want to record a stereo guitar track and i want to get the dirty sound of an amp with line out and i want to blend that with just a dry instrument signal from a hi-z input on my interface, can i configure this manual latency for just one channel at a time? or is it only applicable to your entire studio one environment as a whole?

Just patch a mono jack cable from your headphones out to an input. Turn up the volume from both headphone out and input (not too loud, or you'll get feedback). Then arm the track and record the loop. It's quite easy. Mine was off 57 samples.

Any idea what to look at, if I constantly get different values for the midi offset? As an example, I have my Yamaha P-115 connected via USB to my Laptop. I've setup the loop as per the video. First time I record a midi note, I have an offset of let's say 10ms, so I enter that to compensate. I test that and now I have an offset of 3ms. So I adjust again, test again and I get some other value, let's say 4ms. Works perfectly for audio recording, but I can't get it to align for midi :-/

I did this but I have one concern with my implementation. In Gregor's example, the loopback and test wave are pretty much identical, just shifted. When I did this test, the very first peak of my loopback wave has a slightly smaller amplitude than the second peak. Any ideas why? Also, when doing the midi part, why doesn't the test wave show up in the loopback. I noticed that that track isn't muted so wouldn't it still be fed into the loopback?

I have an issue. My external midi instrument is recoding back in in time now using the above principal. but now my audio loop back is out of time. To explaiin. When sending midi to my external hardware synth and recording the audio back in the offset needed is 875 samples. When sending an audio file out to analogue gear and recording back in again the offset required is 0 samples ... Im really confused ....

Performed this recording loopback test with my tascam model 12 in audio interface mode and measured the latency at about 1300 samples. Entering this value in the Record Offset field and trying the test again doesn't seem to change anything.
@presonus
@presonus Жыл бұрын
Hi, this Loopback test is meant more for users who experience that what they're recording doesn't match the timing of what they were playing (this mostly affects users working with MIDI and virtual instruments). A latency of 1300 samples would be far too long to begin with for these purposes. You may want to try reducing your block size, if recording MIDI live is something you're interested in (e.g. with a MIDI keyboard controller). -GBY
@briandavidgregory
@briandavidgregory Жыл бұрын
@@presonus Thanks for the feedback. I think this is specific to the tascam model 12 - it has a bunch of internal routing that is hard to get correct. If I route the main back into an aux track (in software) I get a very similar result to you and can correct it the same as you, but trying to physically route the main output into one of the inputs causes a LOT of delay and I think that's just the way it is. I don't get this delay when playing live - the midi correction works exactly as you described. Love the videos!

I feel I must join in the praise for this series of videos. Excellent content, smooth, clear delivery and an extraordinary ability to make the challenge of learning such complex software a lot easier. But I downloaded the loopback test file and was told it was incompatible with my version of Studio One because it was created with Studio One 4. Mine is 3.5. Is there any chance of your providing a similar file that I can use to clean up my timing issues? Many thanks and please, please keep those videos coming. Brilliant!
