Hi , just wanted to know how long does it take and does it really take only 5-10 minutes to cure ?and does they same happen with epoxy resin as well?

I just got some starter supplies...mainly as a way to kill some time bc ive always been somewhat interested in this....if it turns into a full blown hobby where could i get a pressure pot? did i hear harbor freight?

I bought a 5 pound pressure pot that’s altered for resin. I’m curious if I could create wooden pieces to stack on top of each other so I can get more resin into the pressure pot? This would also help with moving and removing the art.

Yes, you can do that.

Hi, I pressure cast fishing lures that have a 15/20% microbubble component, I cast at 80 psi ( the pot is not homemade) but I still find when I sand parts near the spue etc there are bubbles I need to drill and fill. The bubbles sre always at the top too, is this due to the thickness of the mix? I try and keep the environment moisture free too.

Barry, what do you mean when you say "the bubbles are always at the top"? How fast is the kick time on your resin?

I have had a problem with my task 4 urethane casting, I have cast at 60 psi in a pressure tank and I have obtained an imprint, with a sticky and shiny layer, as inhibited, but in the same casting, in different molds, I got cast good.

Smooth-On brand resins in general are kinda testy. If the mixing ratio is off by just a little bit, it can produce weird, inconsistent results in the final casting.

How is Urethane different from epoxy? Thanks for the upload!

There are many different variations of each. However if you are referencing casting resins the main things we notice is urethanes are more moisture sensitive than epoxies and epoxies are more brittle than urethanes and epoxies smell worse than urethanes. Since controlling moisture is no big deal for us we prefer urethanes because they make more durable castings. Also we are able to get urethanes in faster setting options which allows us a quicker turnaround time on castings. Both work well for their intended purposes and we will use whichever fits the desired specs for the job.

Could you perhaps tell me what is the difference between pressure casting compared to vacuum casting of small parts? To me pressure casting looks way more simple..?

I tried pressure casting but i had a problem, the mould distorted under pressure, 40 psi the resin copy was a bit contorted not its usual shape. Was i using the wrong type of silicone, too flexible, too soft , did the pressure distorted the soft mould or do i use a harder silicone mould. What best silicone to pressurise. Can i pressure silicone when i am making the mould.

Did you vacuum the silicone when you made the mold? What shore hardness was your silicone?

I didn't vacuum, but i might have a go at pressuring the mould when i make a new one, just as an experiment. The shore strength is 28 i believe soft. I think the soft mould contorts under pressure.

You can try pressure casting the mold but we have not had very good success with that. Some silicones may not cure properly. Normally you would vacuum the mold and pressure cast the resin. We use 30A silicone so the 28 is not the problem.

Thanks for your reply, i will try some 30A, just a matter of experimentation.
