You have a great point, but people forget what the #1 problem really is! DEMOCRATS believe in gov't and trying to make gov't work well and improve people's lives. REPUBLICANS believe gov't is the problem and should get out of the way. When democrats are in control of the gov't, they place people in charge that want things to work correctly, improve the system, and help people. When republicans are in charge of gov't, they place people in charge that has actively worked against gov't, worked for private companies that profit off gov't, or people that only qualifications are they are rich. The United States used to conduct studies and research on everything, but the republican party decided to kill gov't because of their position of protecting the 1%'ers. (SIDE NOTE: remember when MITCH was holding up legislature on COVID payment to the American people until he got immunity for businesses for people getting sick on their jobs due to the jobs not taking precautions) The republicans have killed all studies and research that was conducted in any agencies (EPA, FDA, FAA, medical, VA: ever wonder how you can walk into any drugstore and see hundreds of different types of pills on the shelves, but when you read the bottle, it says NOT approved by the FDA, especially all those health supplements)

As someone who went through med school, do you believe there should be some time dedicated specifically to the causes and conditions that veterans suffer as they are clearly a population with unique conditions often obtained in uncommon ways? I imagine if the medical community spent more time looking at these conditions specifically it wouldn't be so difficult for individuals to prove their 'burden of proof'

I would argue that this is actually MORE serious than the Daily Show ever was. As brilliant as his commentary was, that's all it was - commentary. This time though, he's doing a lot more than just commentary. He's actually sitting people down, talking about the problem, and trying to figure out a solution.

@@DinoJake I completely agree! However, even in his comedic commentary he and his team did proper journalism, ask the right questions and spot in conclusions. To see him activated in this “serious” capacity is just amazing.

I don’t think he really set out to be a journalist. The daily show used to be more about the punchlines, but more people started to get their news there so they had to tighten up and fact check more and more. But once you have those facts and see how insane the whole thing is, and while he’s a comedian at heart, at a point you just want answers.

I dont think he ever planned for the show and his voice to become so important and yes - over time they chose to respect the audience and elevate the show to what ot became eventually. This is something Colbert never did. John Oliver however definitely continued on the JS’s theme.

I'm an Iranian and can't agree with you more. I was 2 when the war started and between Iraq and Iran & it lasted for 8 Fucking years. To this date we still have veterans that are suffering from PTSD, Lunge cancer because of chemical weapons. Many of may friends will get craze rashes after a simple thunder storm because it reminds them of the bombing still can't stand loud alarms because it immediately brings me back to war alarms during the war. That feeling in your stomach never goes away. Most of my generation are having hundreds of different mental problems because of that. I can't appreciate Srg. James enough for his words. Please stop this madness. Almost 22 years in Afghanistan, almost 20 years in Iraq, Syria, Libya, South American countries and all of these just for Industrial military complex. As you can see they can't even pass a simple law inside US to protect children from being massacred because of weapon industry. I mean for god sake do something about it. I sometimes feel I'm living in different universe or something. Please stop for the sake of Americans, Iranian, Iraqis, Yemenis, Palestinians, Syrians, South Americans. Sadly, if money can be made off war, wars will continue to happen. That's the disturbing truth. Of course, anybody with a thinking brain and anybody with an ounce of compassion knows that there is no such thing as a just war. But we know the X factor - money/profit. So, logically... we need to establish a new system that doesn't prioritize money/profit over people. Put people first: Medicare For All, Housing For All, UBI. That is a path forward. Almost anything else will just continue to be a frustrating spinning of wheels.

It is misleading and widely untrue that people were joining together to kill each other since humans were hunter-gatherers with no concept of money. We would simply not be here to have this discussion if our early human nature was to kill each other for no good reason. There was far too few of us and far too much at stake for us to build a society on wealth accumulation, social status, power and regular conflict. We survived 99% of human history as egalitarian hunter-gatherers with no money or markets. The occasional individual disputes were there, sure, but no where even close to the complete reckless indifference we see systemic death and destruction over the last 5000 years. Now, in the technology age, we have the ability to provide everybody with a high quality of life, all the basic needs, done with automation, digital network feedback and intelligent sharing, production and distribution. Poverty, war, unnecessary suffering should be a thing of the past. Money/market economies are the underlying problem that stops us from organizing in a rational way.

He really is. Some of the best and most intense Daily Show episodes were when he was championing for health care for 9/11 first responders who were being denied and addressing the lack of jobs and housing issues for veterans. So many people are happy to scream "support the troops", but few delve into the serious issues they face the way Jon does.

I had a friend who painted ship bottoms with copper based paint for the military and others. His liver biopsy had red paint in it and it gave him liver cancer. The VA treated him with morphine until hospice took over with more morphine.

I really like this idea, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to know how it would work. Would representatives have to have a child who meets military recruitment standards to vote yes on going to war? Would the current exemptions from service also apply to those children of representatives? Would they be required to serve in active combat roles? Sorry for bringing up so many questions back-to-back, but those came to mind if we were to implement that system and I'd like to hear feedback from everybody.

Yes, the current exemptions would apply but they would need to be checked and approved by multiple neutral doctors to avoid any foul play or deception. And yes, their children would need to be in active combat. The more hawkish the politician, the more likely their child should see active combat. The brother hit it dead on the head. All to often the call to war is made by those who haven't, wouldn't, or couldn't take a life themselves. This doesn't make sense on any conceivable level. Frankly, I can't think of anything more privileged, cowardly, and despicable than consciously sending someone else's children to war as their own children go on vacay and it happens CONSTANTLY.

@@Kavala76 True, there are only two problems with that: 1) those are not institutions, so they are out of the scope of that list, and 2) that's a communist perspective, which is genuinely the best philosophy for a perfectly selfless species, and less so for an imperfectly selfish one. Because society has made it seem like going "thank you for your service" or when a vet talks it carries more weight no matter what they talk about then ignoring what they actually said is enough. This is about money the defence budget has only grown and what we actually spend in the name of defense and war has been over a trillion a year for the last 20 years at least if not longer. We hide it in the dept of energy budget we hide it in special spending bills we hide it in black projects. Instead of build and staffing for the best care the best treatment for our vets hell for our entire country. We spend brillions on nearly 4000 Abrams tanks setting in the deserts of Nevada and New Mexico with no use. Money is used on 120 "stealth" ships that then get pared down to 50 then 12 then 3 as they fail to work and never were going to as the "smart gun" the ships were built around failed in everyway the ammo costing 800k a shell. Worse then 1 ship nearly sinks under it's own gun and we retire the entire line of ships. Well we spent hundreds of billion on R&D for those ships; we don't even get 3 full ships because they were never going to work and we knew that, and the rest of the hundreds of billions in funding that was already passed in a bill a decade ago get's put into the pentagon slush fund. We get the f-35 a 1 trillion + boondoggle that still can't live up to it's promises nearly 20 years ago and the pentagon and airforce are talking about it's replacement now. Nevermind we just wasted enough money to build a cross country web of high speed rail with fiber optic internet for every man woman and child in our country on One joke of a fighter jet. Defend spending has become a taxpayer funded jobs program where the only thing we get out of it is weapons we ether can't use or don't work as the rich get richer on these contracts. Helping the sick even sick soldiers doesn't provide enough of a return of investment for the fatcats in the corporate world R&Ding a new weapon that may or may not work after 15 year does.

Well... it's the first season, in all fairness. I'm sure most of us will forgive a lot of these little things for now, because the show is good (gist-wise) and probably it's them trying out things, formats and/or segments that might work. To be honest, it's good that people are looking for improvements. That to me is constructive criticism, a good sign that people see the show as good, they're interested, and they want to see it do well.
