What if everything you were taught to believe about neuroatypical brains was wrong? People with neurological disorders, including autism spectrum disorder, are often perceived as taxes on society, receiving charitable care and adding little in return. But what if these people could actually teach us a thing or two about how to do neurotypical life better? What if they could teach us how to do a little magic? Nariman Gathers is neuroatypical. They map their diagnosis closest to that of Autism Spectrum Disorder, and sometimes they even see sounds. They spend their time as a designer turning everyday neuroatypical strategies into steps that help neurotypical folks do community better. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thank you too. I'd like to try that talking over someone and counting the amount of times to kind of make it proportionately equal. I rarely finish sentences, because interruptions are so common. I just figure that people just aren't interested and don't value my input or what I have to say and I usually leave it at that.

Thank you for sharing the secret of this magic. This says so much so clearly. I have spent the last couple years re-learning my life as a network of details, intentionally setting out to learn how they work. Most of the people I interacted with were unaware of a lot of the effects they had and I struggled to find a good way to explain it.

I never knew neuro(a)typical and neurotypical. Were things. I mean I completely missed the target with anything for social standards. I enjoyed the demeanor you kept. As well, I'd much rather have a conversation with you rather than many people i know. Back to the beginning. I never have been to therapy, I labeled myself the outlier and ran with it. Growing on all the aspects which others seemed hesitant to address. I'm okay, and not okay. But I strongly believe I'm more okay than a lot of people whom are "more okay" than me.

For some reason I thought that, I was the only person whom knew about looking at the bridge of people's nose. I have also found that usually people can't tell the difference of where the focus of my eyes are. Where can I get more information about neuroatypical brains? I feel like I am not of this planet. Thank you so much for this video. I relate with everything you said, except for therapy. I realize I need it.

Neuroatypical -> people that are autistic, have ADHD, dyscalculia, I think schizophrenia is in this too, all these. Neurodiversity includes everyone - neuroAtypical and neurotypical. Just like diversity in gender includes cis-men or cis-women or diversity in race includes white people. It says that all these things are human and okay in their way. Neurodiversity is often mixed up with the term Neurodivergent - which is just another term for neuroAtypical.

@@JinJinMMFM I’m autistic/adhd/ocd and I guess I don’t understand why this is a newer necessary distinct word for certain brains. I understand the concept in medical and psychological terms but I obviously struggle with the constant change in terminology to describe that my brain works differently.

Tbh kind of surprised this person went with neuroatypical instead of neurodivergent. I prefer the latter because it’s easy to tell the difference between that and neurotypical, both in text and speech. :Bb

Can any of these people make anything of value? Things like food, tools, useful household products, or anything else people have a legitimate need for? Of course not. Can they provide any useful services that people require without continually creating disturbances and conflicts, stopping periodically for no reason and staring into space, or making random and inappropriate outbursts? Of course not. Sink or swim, and carry your own weight. The rest of us are tired of carrying you and providing the things you need for nothing in return. No one cares about your twisted feelings. If your relatives want to take care of you, let them. The rest of us owe you nothing.
