Entering the world of 21st Century gypsy and traveller weddings, where ancient traditions meet modern fashions in an ostentatious culture clash, this film follows four gypsy and traveller families on their wedding day.
Considered ‘on the shelf’ at 20, in gypsy and traveller communities many girls get married soon after their 16th birthday with the support of their family.
The weddings are visual spectacles: brides and their families compete to have the most flamboyant dresses; girls parade into church in enormous dresses that sometimes weigh more than the bride herself.
Although the women look sexually provocative there is a tradition of premarital chastity that is increasingly unusual in Britain today.

Agreed. It’s almost like someone getting into a relationship after constantly being hurt or fucked over. It isn’t that current bf or gf’s fault for all that, but people sometimes can’t help but not be able to trust these new people or be scared to open up. It doesn’t make it right that they just have trust issues from others and not them but they also shouldn’t take it out in them yk? That’s the best way I can explain it. They also shouldn’t uphold their reputation proudly when every person or business doesnt want anything to do w them. just like one can’t blame all men/women for one or a few bad ones.

He's a lazy, arrogant good for nothing . In all my 35 years married to my late husband of 10 years passed away, he not only looked after our kids but me to after endless surgery. He washed, ironed, cooked and cleaned, and went to work leaving relatives with me who worked without word of complaint to care for and the boys we took our vows seriously.for me as stated in sickness and in health. Called love and respect. When we found out he had stage 4 cancer I brought him home from hospital and nursed him myself despite being seriously I'll myself with a bad Crohn's flare up, he was more Important. he died a week and a half after leaving hospital with me his brother and our middle son and Marie Curie Nurse. Our other sons' were, our were away, one at work conference in Scotland and youngest working in London, both arrived home next day as it was after 10pm at night when he died and last trains had already left. None of us new he would die that night, he was given month, he told the. To go to work as normal, he had plenty of time so he thought. The ladies should have told her husband to get off his backside and cook his own tea. I'd have hit him with a cast iron skillet and put him in hospita wlhile I packed and left him.A REAL man would have prepared me a meal and fed our kids and, not send me out for food. I never married again or dated after be died, still married to him until I die and join him in Heaven, at 65 I expect it will be in next 20 years all being well. All women I our female family members lived to late 90.s, tough ladies.

This is the reason why a lot of dressmakers and venues, etc. do not want to deal with travelers or gypsies etc. because of issues like this. For every event that I’ve seen, they literally destroy peoples property and cause people like dressmakers and venue owners millions and millions of dollars in repairs, etc . Everyone is saying that they are a headache.

I feel like it’s lost on the traveling community that the reason they get “shunned” from society isn’t because people are prejudiced against gypsies. It’s because the community actively commits human rights violations on a regular basis. Pulling children out of school to get married at 14, looking the other way when women get raped or abused, so many terrible instances. That’s why they aren’t “accepted” and it’s wild that they re so blind to it. The whole thing is very sad.

Definition of bigotry - obstinate or unreasonable attachment to a belief, opinion, or faction; in particular, prejudice against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group. @@megansarat I’m not being funny but it’s true. I’ve had many Gypsies come into our towns every year and I’ve had nothing but bad experiences with them. All the things said above are true. It’s absolutely a fact that they take girls out of education at 11, if not younger, that’s not only illegal but extremely sexist, leading to girls having to rely on the men in their lives as they have no independence. Any other group who have done this in the past have been penalized and written in the history books as the bad guys, it’s worth thinking about that when u try and stick up for them. There has to be a reason why places don’t want to associate with travellers, and it’s not just that they’re travellers. My guess is it’s because they’re disrespectful and destructive. Why else would a venue not want them there. They just said that a large number of them were arrested at the horse fair the previous year and now friends of the bride were kicked out of a hotel due to their behaviour. They’re not innocent victims of ridicule at all. They have a reputation and unfortunately they got it on their own. Now they have to live with the repercussions and consequences.

The next morning I went to collect my things and the candy cart had been smashed up, the centre pieces all stolen and the white linen all ruined. Don't get me started on my husband. He runs an electric gate company and has ALWAYS done work for travellers... however over the last few years he's had to stop due to non payments, threats, them purposefully breaking the motors etc to get out of paying. Treat people with respect. It works both ways. Each side is responsible for half of the relationship. Each side is 100% responsible for their own 50%. What do the Travellers bring to the table? Nothing! They demand, expect, and play the victim. Do they go around and pick up garbage in the communities the stop in? No. They use the roads, yet do not pay taxes. They seem so focused on what is being done to them. But do not take any responsibility. They were kicked out a hotel because other paying guests were being bothered. Whenever we’d go on school trips we were expressly told that we had to be absolutely perfect the entire trip. Because we were kids, and people are judgemental of kids, we needed to be extra careful of our behaviour. They act as though they are innocent but where there is smoke, there is fire. Take some effing responsibility people and stop being the victim!!

I believe that the gypsy community go through a viscous cycle. Kids leave school at 11 and many times with a very low level of education (e.g not knowing the alphabet) due to the constant moving/lack of importance to education. With the community being closed off to the world their community, way of living and rules are all they know. Because their education stops so young and they only socialize with people who’s education also stopped young, they’re almost frozen in time to the age they left. There’s no ability to really grow. If a “gorger” left school early, there’s still chance to grow. They live in a community thats diverse and educated, as they grow up they’ll learn from their peers, for e.g how to be mature and the options in life. Gypsies don’t have that because most of their community have the same level of education. They r taught that they don’t need education, to not mix with gorgers, the men r in charge, marry asap, have kids, woman clean and take care of the man who’s the breadwinner. As they’re so closed off from the world, they can’t compare it against other paths, and as that’s all they see, that’s how they live. They then have kids of their own and raise them the same, and the cycle begins again. This is why some commit crimes (steal, con, fight)(been taught to in their community, all they know, low level education); act immaturely; don’t want to change; think it’s okay to act how they do and think they’re wrongly treated. It’s rlly sad, they’re still humans after all who r kind souls, they where just never given the opportunity in life :( Obvs I’m not talking about every gypsy but I am talking about their general culture and traditions.

@@anthonyhassett i suppose the difference between your family and gypsie is that the aspects mentioned above are their culture and traditions, much harder to break. I believe that they are very determined to stick to their culture and traditions as it is dying out, they want to preserve it. I certainly dont propose more state assistance, if I’m being honest i think its ridiculous how they dont pay even council tax, however i do think perhaps more stricter regulations on how their schooling is managed. I assume that they take them out of school under the pretences that they are to be homeschooled, however we both know that doesn’t occur. If they were more or less forced to stay in school I would like to think that it may help. Perhaps now that social media is now so vast that even may help, help them see the outside world, communicate with people. However i simply do not know, as someone in the final year of a law degree i can only really suggest tighter laws lol

My partner is a big chap and tough but even he found it to much, also the hedges outside of the site were disgusting full of rubbish yet they are like a minutes drive from a re-cycle plant so no excuses for fly tipping. My daughter’s partner told me about two special sites they had equipped for other gypsies in the next county they abandoned them and they were never used. The other problem is they go around are area’s ear marking particularly homes or cars to steal and using certain things to mark homes where they can steal dogs either for breading or dog fighting. Show the GLORIOUS history of your culture do not accentuate the less than civil actions. Share your recipes, share the husbandry of raising those beautiful ponys and horses. Share a song, and its meaning. Im from the US and have never met a true Traveler. I have heard that there are communities in some areas here in the US. I did work at a grocery store in the late 1970's while I was in High School. The store was in Eastern Iowa and that is part of the "Corn belt" and much other types of foods are grown there. There are migrant workers who would "travel" through and I hate to say it, rob the store blind. There was also a clever "slide of hand" or a distraction like "Didnt I give you a $10 bill? etc. The workers did look different at well. Darker, almost olive colored skin, beautiful dark wild hair, and a demeanor that "ratted them out" from the quite town people. I do really enjoy "learning" about cultures from these videos. Even tho they are slightly "Slanted" to show the worst. I can pick thru that. Thanks.

In theory, yes. In practice they would have to declare tax and deal with banking. Most are at best illiterate. You also need to be of good character to either hold or apply for a liqour lisence. Then you have to apply for planning permission for a venue......locals won't allow that because of the trouble it draws. Worse than that travellers have bad credit histories. Totally undesirable in an area

He says people dread the word gypsy and he doesn’t know why,,, oh you know very well why, Thelma defends them because they’ve made her very rich, personally I would avoid like the plague and where do they get the money for these weddings, it’s not like they have the education to have a highly paid job, i don’t understand where this money comes from

You'd think that they could provide the Bride with a bench to sit on at the reception. No high back of the chair to have to deal with. Hoops of the skirt just go over the bench completely. Hope a Wedding Planner reads this. Love all these videos as I'm Irish on my father's side.
