There is a way you can fix the flywheel. You can cut a 1.5mm deep groove where the key was, then use a piece of 3mm x 3mm steel tas a key. I've done this lots of times

Sorry for spamming comments, but the amount of pulls to get a good compression reading is really important, if it takes a lot of pulls it means the cylinder is only holding compression during the stroke for a very very small moment, before it ignites the gas. This can really mess up acceleration

first put piston stop, the rotate engine to stop, then place flywheel with sheared spot where it should be on crank, tighten and it shouldn't move, because its just position when instaling it doesn't hold anything when tight enough and wont spin

Something to be aware of when cleaning pistons, if you're cleaning the skirt, avoid metal brushes, sandpaper, etc. The sides of pistons are coated with Teflon to reduce friction. I figured that out the hard way lol

I would not worry about any coatings on a little cheap Poulan piston. Scotch Brite and fine sandpaper is commonly used to get pistons back up and running and they last just fine, even in heavy use conditions with ported cylinders. Especially on a Poulan trimmer engine that is only rated for 25-50 hours of use.

I have a cabin on the Susquehanna river and back in 2011 it flooded badly. I had a 6hp Johnson outboard from the 60s that was in my shed, and it was fully underwater for 4 or 5 days. The outside of the engine was covered completely with mud. I was able to scoop mud out of the carburetor with my pinky finger. I hooked up a fuel tank and it started first pull and just sat there idling, completely full of mud. I love that outboard. Cool video

I have tried to get one of those same flywheels working with a sheared key... I had only some success. I had my Dremel go missing so I was trying to file a new slot where the key came from. If I had the Dremel and gone and gotten a pack of woodruff keys I may have been %100 percent successful. I would cut a slot where the key was in the flywheel and see if you can find a new key or make one from something like a Briggs key or something similar. It may help to lap the flywheel to the shaft if it's tapered to help it grip the shaft when it's installed. A flywheel might be worth because that's not a trimmer which are easier to find cheap or free.

The key does not really secure the flywheel to the crank, it's just there for indexing. The actual "locking" comes from the taper on the crank and in the flywheel. You can carefully tighten the nut while keeping the flywheel in its proper location. After a full torque, you can remove the nut to check alignment (especially if you make a witness mark or two) and if it's good, rattle gun the nut back on. If you have doubts a little loctite bearing retainer will make it a semi-permanent fixture but IMHO its probably not needed. Judt good torque on it. This was a fun one!! Never seen mud in a crankcase before, personally. Considering it was full of mud and sand the compression was still great. I bet that ring will seat better with some runtime.
