I did a little excited happy dance when you got it tuned and cut that log 😁🕺 That sounds exactly how those engines sound when running perfectly. Awesome Job! I think it was worth the time because not everyone has money to buy new things but they may have time to repair them.

I’d say if this is something you’re fixing for yourself, then it’s worth the time and effort, but if it’s for a customer it’s not worth more effort than a carb rebuild and fuel lines, unless it were a more expensive brand. You are gaining knowledge by working on things like this though, so that’s definitely worth something

I have a really long memory. Years ago, when I was attempting to fix a Polan product I attempted to get some information from their customer service. Because of the BS that I got from them I determined that I would never buy or use a Polan product again. This is what I told their representative. I've kept that promise!

I have a suggestion for you! Harbor Freight sells "airbrush cleaning brushes" which are basically a variety of tiny pipe cleaner style brushes on a key chain. Super cheap. They are GREAT for cleaning some of the passages in small engine carbs. Really old gunk can be tenacious. Thanks again for sharing these videos! I have learned a lot from you.

This one was a ton of work! Between the stuck piston, the flywheel and the carb I think it was too much for a low end machine. Yes you got it working and that’s great, however your time spent, to me, wasn’t worth it for this unit. It may run now but the next time out something else could go. If it was mine I would have parted it out and had it been for a customer I would have recommended putting their money towards a new, better quality saw. Having said that, I enjoyed this series. Your determination is inspiring. Cheers

Amateur mechanic so no carb rebuild, I am hoping I get lucky with the screw adjustments. Tried to tighten the chain yesterday but because it choked so high it threw it and now have to de-bur it ..wtf .. $700-$1000 for a stihl used where I am yet I still wonder if I should just scrap this junk and get a super reliable brand. Thank you for your work here ., you’ve given me enough to give it a shot !

i'd say that since you're a content creator, it makes sense that you did it for the education and teaching of what to do and not to do with a unit like this one. Also, to the degree it was damaged, you gave an extremely detailed look at what is entailed in fixing it, so others can do the same. Personally, i'd have put it on the curve for the trash man, lol. But, IF it were for someone that had fallen on hard times, or a very close friend i'd consider it. I hope that you had an awesome holiday, and Happy New Year, IHG! I have one of those. I runStihl Ultra @50:1 with premium non ethanol gas and stabilizer and have no problems with it. It is in storage condition in my shop, right now. I put it up last fall but even if I had not it would still crank up. My gas is stabilized for up to two years. My weed-eater cranked up this spring and I had forgotten to put it into storage condition. I just ran it’s tank almost empty and filled it up with fresh two cycle gas. My weed-eater is a Husqvarna 28 L and is about ten years old.

Great job on the fix. 6 hours is definitely more time than what I would have spent on it.

I start with 1/2 turn on the L and one turn on the idle screw. When I get it running, I adjust them back to where I want them. I usually preset new carbs to one turn on each jet and idle to about two turn out from full closure. Once running, I adjust them as needed.

Fixing older equipment is often worth it if items like carbs, chains, etc. are the issue. When you put the two poles together, does the spring loaded snap button belong in the hole provided? Thanks for the video.

Well I did an engine swap on a homelite out of necessity, if you have the time but not the money you can learn to fix everything

yes it was most surely most the 6 hours all up plus getting it working again and of course giving things a good overall cleaning to insure the jobs ahead are hassle free plus freeing up the engine is a good thing too and very good you saved it too and better than seeing it go the scrap heap etc.

Last question for2022 😂 Can you share the Craftsman Phillips head screw attachment you use on your drill? It doesn’t have the large coupler where the bit attaches and allows you to get into tighter recesses. how can I get one? I’ve looked at hundreds of craftsman images trying to match it. Great job. Not sure which # on the stihl fs55 to adjust the H speed 10000rpm or 8400rpm.

Given that you were not charging the customer for your time I think this fix was well worth the effort if only from a learning process point of view, ie never start a machine like this without the clutch assembly in place !

I might be wrong but I think you could adjust the H screw a little more since I think it was 4-stroking at full throttle?

I was wondering why the metering diaphragm link was different..ebay has original looking one unfortunately they sometimes take forever to arrive. I saved the videos as a I have this machine as whipper snippers . 👍🏾

Anytime you fix a piece of equipment that was not working, it is NEVER a waste of time. Not every project is a one hour fix. Sometimes, you have to put in a little overtime. You've often mentioned that you carry the four major styles of metering diaphragm, covering a range of shapes and button/stem heights. Could you share all 4 types...preferably with links to each type that you've found reliably provide the correct button/stem height in a 10-pack listing? Let's just say that some vendors don't exactly have an eye for detail when they upload photos and/or specs, causing unnecessary frustration! Thanks!

If you're doing it for a customer or yourself for free no,it's worth it but in the business that I started in yes it's cost prohibitive because the labour rate was $50 AUD per hour which equates to $300 AUD for 6 hours

By the way, my trimmer bogs just a little when i start it, then goes away, should i fiddle with the H screw, because it bogs a little when i squeeze the throttle?

At 13.04 you say adjusting idle speed , actually you are adjusting low speed fuel mixture jet , which does effect idle but only by the fuel mixture changing , to adjust idle speed AFTER you get the low speed fuel mixture set "" there is a small Phillips head screw that is the actual idle speed screw , it pushes against the throttle plate ! And when cleaning the carburetor always remove the jet and rocker arm and remove the filter screen with a tiny pick like tool then you can spray carburetor spray directly through the hole !

I do think 6 hours is way too long to spend on fixing one piece of equipment, but it is what it is.

I know 1 trick so that brush cutter or trimmer carb don't get jammed is when stopping the engine after your work, sqeeze the fuel line so engine don't receive fuel from tank and burn leftover fuel in carb. That way no fuel is left in carb and probably next time you try start your trimmer or brush cutter it starts in first go without any hesitation. If you shut your engine directly then oil mixed in petrol gums up in carb as petrol evaporates and you get jammed carb and probably have trouble starting engine next time or after period of time.
