If there is ever a generation that needs a lecture about vainglory, it is this current generation that grew up in the Internet age, and whose identity is so thoroughly ensconced in the fickle tastes of social media. Obviously, vainglory has, like other vices, plagued us since time immemorial. With that said, it has been amplified by Tik Tok, Instagram, etc. in a way that it never has before. There is a constant and never ending barrage of people seeking validation and others dispensing it that is unprecedent in human history. Ultimately, all of this incessant affirmation of people's worth, on the most shallow of things, is a cancer to the soul. It debases the people who are the praise givers and it enfeebles those who are addicted to this praise. Thank you, Mother Natalia, for these words of wisdom at at time when they are so desperately needed.

it's a strange cycle of always thinking youre better than everyone no matter what you do. I'm proud of my looks, oh no i should be modest. Look i'm better becuase i'm modest. It's a strange constant need of praise from oneself and others and it's bad but comes from something deeper that we're always displeased with our current self.

Mother Angelica wrote a wonderful book called "On Suffering and Burnout" it is very helpful to put us in our place in our relationship with God, especially regarding our suffering and how we judge other's sufferings. I highly suggest it ! I went from pray to have my foot healed so I could take my kids out and about and then came to believe I need really only to gets physically better so I can genuflect before our Lord in the blessed Sacrament. Define helped with my own pride and vain glory

All the fake christians that fill all the apostate churches are all filled with pride and with ignorance. This is why they have been snared into the church. There are no Christians in the church.

Haha, thanks Mother Natalia! I had to apologize as well this morning to the early Mass congregation as God publicly humbled me before the whole congregation! Thank God for always finding good ways to humble and open me to correction. And to use my humbling to show the children that everyone messes up sometimes, and that "it isn't the end of the world!" God is merciful and loving. He always brings me back to my fallibility but i hope. And He is always there. Smiling and lovingly shaking His Head. ❤😂❤😂❤😂 detatchment from ego and desired self-image. We are only clay, but we are God's clay.

I’m Coptic Orthodox and we refer to him as saint Evagrius. I think for Chalcedonians, he was condemned with Origen and Didymus the Blind (the latter also canonized in the Coptic Church) for Origenism. For the life of me, I also have great honor and respect for Origen and I think it’s a shame he is not canonized.

Regardless what I do, theres self regard and vainglory Makes me feel completely stuck , ignorant and clueless at the feet of Jesus , proclaiming I literally know nothing anymore This was a unique moment /topic of discussion and so relevant to every single moment I breathe Oh boy. *sigh 😆

Dearest Mother, show my error if i am wrong, but what keeps me in rememberance, is our LORD, who is rightously worthy of all pride and vanity, instead chose his passion, for us who are unworthy. HE chose utter poverty, disgrace, pain for us. Yet HE was able to take this worldly kingdom at any time. HE who has liscence to the only pride and vanity, declines for us. The Apostles chose the same, and every martyr. We must choose faith in, and be not afraid, of "our" spilled blood being the strength of Holy Mother Church. Pride and vanity are nothing but fearing humans mor than our LORD. Sometimes we complicate simplicity in a prideful way to seem as if we are working harder. Life is not difficult, keep it simple. On our knees, eyes ever on Calvary. Life without obedience to our KING is difficult. Practicing obedience is the anti dote to pride and vanity. GOD bless you Mother. Praised be JESUS. In this sense there's another version of pride/vainglory where one purposefully tries to inflate others to preserve a self-diminished image a.k.a. look how bad I am at XYZ or this person is so much better than me.

Do we do it for genuine love of God? And does he even require we look, feel and act out best? He requires so much more and usually those things mentioned aren’t the most important factors in serving him.

@@AA-gu4mw I'm not sure that every action or motive is in genuine love for God with anyone, but it should be. All I know is that when I'm feeling good inside and out, I'm kinder to myself and more joyful to and with others. I've spent so many years being down on myself, not liking myself, feeling awful about myself. And that feeling seeps out and permeates around me. I work hard to get better internally, externally, spiritually. I don't know. I've been pretty miserable most of my life. I just want to feel better is all. I don't, or at least I try not to neglect my religious duties. I go to mass weekly and confession and pray a lot and mostly intercede for the well being and salvation of a lot of people. I spent many years focusing on others, I'm giving myself a bit of nurturing and self love now, hopefully that's that a bad thing. Tbh, I just want to go to heaven already but too many ppl to pray for. Until then, no rest and just trying to enjoy and make the most of this wretched life.

@@immaculateheart1267 I see. I can relate. When one wasn’t properly nurtured and even abused as a child and while growing up, it’s not easy to love ourselves. For someone like you or I, we have to start over. See ourselves the way God sees us and allow ourselves to see his love for us in our day to day actions. (The other day I was watching my 18 month old eat and was overwhelmed with delight and joy at the sight. I instantly knew God feels the same of me even as a grown up and was consoled.) I think once one is really secure in Gods love, we truly begin to care less about externals but we will often fumble. And we will begin to see more clearly when we are doing things in order to please ourselves rather than because we know it pleases God that we take proper care of ourselves. I think we become more convicted on what that entails the deeper into healing we go.

LOL! Your comment reminds me of the days I was in college and was interested in Christian apologetics. I always found the ontological argument the most bewildering and unnecessarily esoteric of arguments, and the apologist who would use it to be engaging in sophistry.
