Mother, I think it is fantastic that you and Father Pine both have segments on Pints with Aquinas. You two are, as far as I know enough to judge such things, great examples of the Eastern and Western traditions of the Church. We desperately need both! We need the cerebral theology of the west and the deep feeling of the heart from the East; not that the west is all head and east all heart (oversimplification). But you should rest in who God has made you and not feel self conscious at not being like another religious. I very much appreciate your messages.

Thank you, Mother Natalia, for this. I am so looking forward to a continuation of this series. The technological marvels that are such an inextricable part of our modern world only serve to amplify and make more accessible every vice that afflicts us. They act as fertilizer for the pernicious thoughts that produce such transgressions. You name the evil thought or action, the online world facilitates it in a way that is far more extreme than in any other time in our history. This is why this deep dive into the genesis of evil thoughts is desperately needed in our modern era.

Seek misery at all times. To seek after comfort for even a moment is sinful. And don't you dare be sad about it, that's a sin too.

I will assume this is a joke and therefore it is funny. I enjoyed it. I was not remotely sad. Mission accomplished.
@leoncaruthers
@leoncaruthers Ай бұрын
@@halleylujah247 Not a joke, just taking all this to it's logical conclusion. Seeking pleasure and avoiding suffering = sinful passion. Therefore you should sleep on rocks, eat unpleasant food (just enough to not starve), and never marry since you might try to have children and that's not okay. You also shouldn't seek to alleviate the suffering of others by this reasoning, because you're depriving them of an opportunity to offer it up.
@halleylujah247
@halleylujah247 Ай бұрын
@@leoncaruthers You are not taking this to its logical conclusion but over shooting the mark. I truly hope you don't think this is true. If you do that's sad. Thats not what Mother was saying and is definitely not what the Church teaches. Leisure, Joy, and Beauty are all parts of our faith.
@leoncaruthers
@leoncaruthers Ай бұрын
@@halleylujah247 She never qualifies it at all. It is sinful and subhuman to seek pleasure and avoid pain, and it thus follows that we are to seek pain and avoid pleasure, and anything less is sinful self indulgence. About which we must not be sad, because that too is a sin. Without clarifying and qualifying statements, teaching like this is perfect for inspiring scrupulosity and despair, and there are none here at all.
@halleylujah247
@halleylujah247 Ай бұрын
@@leoncaruthers How is it subhuman? I don't believe you are Catholic and this is just your theory. If so you are wrong. God is good and made us good. He gave us beauty and life so we can enjoy it. There are times of pain and suffering but just as there are seasons, it is not constant. We should not seek to make ourselves miserable. This is not why God created you. I am sorry you have taken such a pessimistic view. Please reconsider.

So sadness is evil? According to who? Sadness and grief are mentioned many times in the bible, never once that i can recall was anyone subject to God's wrath due to simply being sad. Unless this came from Jesus himself i am a little dubious about this.
@leticiavalles632
@leticiavalles632 Ай бұрын
Sadness comes from the evil one. Sadness will grow and fool us into believing our sins aren't forgivable. This prevents us from seeking salvation. That is why we as catholics can offer up our suffering to better serve Jesus. Sadness leads to losing hope; which is contrary to our theological virtues.
@Christ_Is_King34
@Christ_Is_King34 Ай бұрын
I think perhaps it is less to do with the fleeting emotion of sadness, which we will all feel from time to time and have little control over. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. If you see cruelty and injustice or suffer the loss of a loved one, that is undoubtedly going to spark a feeling of sadness but it passes and we move on in time. I feel its more about holding onto that emotion and dwelling in a pit of self pity and depression which leads to losing hope like you mentioned. Obviously this is only my opinion, but I feel like we are unlikely to be condemned for feeling a very human emotion once in a while. I can't speak for the Lord, but I believe it's more about the excess of any emotion that leads us to sin rather than expecting ourselves to somehow never feel these very human things. We can't just completely rid ourselves of emotion. It's impossible to never be sad or angry. It's more about not allowing those emotions to define who we are. Seeking the Lord when we feel burdened by strong negative emotions rather than suffering alone and letting them take over our thoughts and direct our actions towards others. We will never be perfect whilst we are still in the flesh. Emotions are unavoidable. Anything in excess is bad for us and not taking those things to lord and allowing him to shoulder that burden will only lead us to unnecessary suffering.
@leticiavalles632
@leticiavalles632 Ай бұрын
@@Christ_Is_King34 yes one feels pain and cries. We feel sadness and it's ok. The tricky part is the continued sadness will lead to hopelessness and maybe nihilism.
@misterkittyandfriends1441
@misterkittyandfriends1441 Ай бұрын
The way I would imagine it is taken is to think of "sadness" as despair / hopelessness, rather than as a rational grief or simply feeling a loss. Hope is a virtue, therefore despair is an evil - an absence of hope.

For some clarification, I'm not accusing anyone of anything, but weren't some of Evagrius Ponticus teachings deemed heretical? Just as was the case with Origen of Alexandria? I read he was accused of heresy by some other Fathers like St Jerome, although I also read his influence was still strong on later Fathers in more indirect ways.
