@Bruce Lee Guppies are by far the easiest fish to breed, keep them in a nice 10+ gallon and males and females and expect some babies! It doesn’t take any effort on your part to get them to breed other than a nice tank 👌 (I have about 150 guppies) I started off with 2.. a male and female he got her pregnant and soon he died then the female gave birth to 3 babies and she died at birth then the 3 kids over bred and now I have overstocking issues... so definitely not hard to breed guppies.

Great video again. I keep my breeding colony in a 24x12x12in on the kitchen counter. People often comment on how dirty it is, as it has a thin film of algae over most of the glass. That is by design. The shrimp seem to farm the algae. Maybe they can't strip that final thin layer, but they tend to spend most of the time on the glass grazing the algae like cattle or ants maybe. I feed mine 6 days a week, and I use the algae as a guide as to the size and frequency of the feeding. More algae on the glass, cut back on feeding, maybe fast for a day. Less algae up the food. They will eat most vegetable scraps, and any kind of fish food, they are not at all fussy. I like to throw a half an eggshell in there once a month, washed as well as I can to remove all the gooey liquid. The shrimp absolutely go nuts for it, and they seem to eat the stringy film on the inside of the shell. and I guess they eat the shell as well, because I never fish it out. I figure it will supply them with the minerals they need to construct their own shells....and it certainly hasn't done the shrimp any harm. The tank has been spitting out shrimp for 3 years now, and has been a nice little earner. Those shrimp breed prolifically, to the point I have to cull some occasionally (they outbreed the market), and have inadvertently created a colony of shrimp in my peacock tank.....you never see them but they are definitely living in the rockwork and the plants I have recently introduced should provide some additional habitat. And I guess the shrimp will provide both entertainment and some light snacks for the fish. I intentionally introduced a colony to my 3ft community tank, with guppies, kuhli loaches and bristlenose. It's a heavily planted tank, and the shrimp are thriving. I'm sure some get picked off, but they are definitely producing more shrimp than are being eaten. I often see babies picking over the substrate, totally exposed and they seem to be left alone for the most part. The bristlenose do an exceptional job of cleaning the algae from the glass on this tank, so you don't see the same grazing behavior on the glass of that tank. I also keep a backup colony in a 5 gal, and they breed in there as well. So they aren't too picky about the size of the house they are in. That said, they don't breed prolifically in the 5 gal, and that colony sustains a relatively stable number of shrimp without me having to intervene, so I would suggest a larger tank if you want to actually produce excess shrimp to sell. Anyway, keep up the excellent work Jason!

I had three very small guppies in my aquarium with my shrimp and assumed everything would be fine because they were too small to eat the shrimp, but they were large enough to harass females in an effort to peck away the eggs they carried. The moral of the story is "No fish is too small to be a threat to your shrimp."

It really is luck of the draw. My male coi Nemo betta lives in harmony with a colony of cherry shrimp, and three mystery snails. They do have lots of rocks, plants and leaf litter to hide in(20 long) BUT my hellboy betta male killed all the cherry shrimp living with him in a similar set up. Also relentlessly attacked mystery snails which I moved to another tank. Am hoping their antennas will grow back. He does however live peacefully with large Amano shrimp and otos. So goodluck to anyone thinking about trying this out. Bettas have such different personalities, which is why I love them, but be prepared with another tank just in case.

It was not too long before they were everywhere. I have Frogbit as a floater and they seem to be having shrimp acrobatics on the roots, fun to watch. Tank mates 10 Boraras micros, I don't think they eat any so tiny. 4 Neon Tetras they spend all day hunting swimming at 45% looking at what is moving. Only rarely have I seen them make a successful dive. But the shrimp are breeding well.

For example, I want to start a cherry shrimp tank but I'm not sure when to introduce them to the tank because it would be brand new. @PrimeTimeAquatics

That is a great question. I tend to temperature acclimate them and just release them into the tank (without adding the bag water). However, I thought I remember seeing Rob drip acclimate his before. Funny how you were lucky enough to find a use for morning wood repashy. I tried it and all of my fish ignore it and same for shrimp even weeks later. I even seen one ride shrimp briefly ride on it then say words like "yuck! broccoli!" and it moved on cuz better things in life lol. But I have seen my shrimp go after rotifers and even chase down live moina 😅

Thanks for the tips, can you breed both shrimp and guppy in the same tank?

Usually the guppies will eat the baby shrimp because they are so tiny.

Do you guys have a pygmy corydoras care guide video? I’m a teen currently and i’ve been thinking about housing some of them in the 10 gallon I have but want to learn more about their needs before I set up the tank. Honestly, i’m kinda expecting a 10 gal tank to be too small for them, but I want to put myself to the test and try to care for one of my favorite freshwater fish.

nice info!! would shrimps do okay in a fake planted aquarium?? it does has plenty of decors and hiding spots. Also, I do have a 10 gallon that has LIVE plants in it, but it has internal filter that hangs on the back. would that suck up the shrimps? or do i need to use a different filter?? thanks...
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 4 жыл бұрын
As long they have food I think they will do fine with fake plants. I have found any filter with an intake needs to be covered with sponge to prevent shrimplets from getting sucked in.

Learned that all colored Neocaridina shrimp are just line-bred from Red Cherry Shrimp. I'm thinking about starting a 5 gallon Jade Green Shrimp Breeding Project to compliment my Clown Killifish Project.

Nice video! Great project for your children. You did forget to mention one of the best fish to keep with your Shrimps: The Dwarf Otocinclus / Otocinclus affinis Steindachner. Everyone knows them as the Otocinclus fish. They belong to the Loricaridae Family of fish. Genus is Otocinclus Cope. They grow no bigger than 1.5 inches. Very good algae eaters. Yes they have teeth, but behind their suckers. Best also school.They eat algae off of plants and glass, and basically never eat meat, or Shrimps. I’m no ichyologists, but I do read! I enjoyed watching. Thank you for sharing!

I got some platy fry in with them, will they be fine for about two months before I can move them to the big tank?
@thelifeaquaticwithrobbull2930
@thelifeaquaticwithrobbull2930 4 жыл бұрын
If the shrimp have cover (anything from a pile of rocks to dense plants like java moss) they will be fine, they have a very short reproductive cycle, and even if your platies eat a few, the colony will bounce back with remarkable speed after the predators are removed. Depending on the size of the fry they may not be capable of eating even the smallest baby shrimp, in which case you'll see no effect at all.

How long would you recommend a tank be cycled for shrimp? The current tank that I have that I’m considering keeping shrimp in is a 20 tall, but it’s been established about a week ago so I know that won’t work 😅
