Great ideas. I always felt a 75 was a good size for discus. I know most people think that is to small but for say 5 fish , it would make a nice setup with proper husbandry. Thanks for great work.

Hi, love your videos. The one thing I recommend is to state what would be the max number of fish in the tank. I understand some grow more than others. It would help out on the max amount depending on the fish. Thanks for your time. Stay safe.

They are my prised fish, own lots of others too (all much smaller community fish) but dunno I just really love S/C American Cichlids and the severum has got to be my all time favorite freshwater fish! ❤️ Soon as I move house and can fit in more tanks I'll definetly be getting some Geophagus and some of the other fish suggested in this video! 8 like it and the retailee sharks are no joke for what really amounts to a suckermouthee fish. I have what I assume us a fish that related to the retail - the rainbow shark. That ole boy ruled the tank even though he was sharing tank space with oscars, a jaguar, a pike and a bunch of convicts. Those featherfins looked amazing. You had me scratching my head for a second because I have alway associated the fearherfin with the Synodontis eupterus - lol

I love the jug in the sand at the beginning. Where can I get one? I am getting ready to bring my aquariums out of storage and because I love all fish, it makes the choices so difficult. I have my tall,weirdo, tank, a 125, 90, 75, 50, 40-something hex, 30 long, 20 tall, 20, and my original 10 gallon Metaframe. Because I end up in the hospital for a week every so often, discus are out. They will need to be hardy and able to handle friend/family care once or twice a year. It is SO hard to choose!

Hi, been watching this video and the “Geophagus Jurupari” you listed, those are actually Satanoperca Leucosticta. Satanoperca Jurupari (formerly known as Geophagus Jurupari before they got their own genus in the 90s) Satanoperca Mapiritensis and Satanoperca Mapiritensis are often mislabeled. Still great fish though :) I got 7 Leucosticta and 7 Mapiritensis in my tank. They do be shy though

Hey Jason took your advice on the 55 gallon we talked about and bought a 75 just wanted some help on who to leave in 55 and who To move to the 75 cause I get a lot of fin nipping no stress just nipping and hate seeing those gorgeous fins tore up. I’m trying to adjust my predators, peacocks (only2), and mbunas and not sure who’s better off in the 75? I wish they’re better ways to distinguish the mainganos and johanni cause I really don’t know the difference on them two. I just want a happy setup and made an amateur mistake on mixing them but they get along right now. My male Dempsey is the tank boss in the 55 right now and I actually think he paired up with the female super excited about that.

I have two 80 gallons in my home office, I have had success with Dennison and featherfin barbs with a single cichlid. The other tank is hard to find the right stocking, currently it has an Oscar and a Texas cichlid with a couple of swordtails. The Oscar is a gentle giant, but the Texas is a pain, waiting for the Oscar to turn it's back before it bites then runs away. Kinda wish I tried a pair of Midas cichlids now

Hello just wanted to say thanks for all of your great and informative videos I just stumbled upon your channel and subscribed!👍👍 Quick question I just bought a 75 gallon tank(4’x18”x21”) And was wondering what you recommend for the base.sand,gravel etc. I currently have one tiger oscar roughly 4-5 inches and a convict cichlid and plan on maybe getting a couple more. I currently have black sand in my 40 gallon tank and was wondering if that sand would be ok or if you recommend getting a lighter color sand or even gravel. I’m looking for Info on maintenance.I do know when they poop and the food I need them is kind of white so it’s fairly noticeable with the black sand. Any info helps and goes along way! Thanks again and hope to here from you soon

Jason, I am a new fish keeper and have started with a 38 gallon bowfront. I was patient with my cycling, research and so on. I'm getting more comfortable everyday and my tank is doing well with 9 Tiger Barbs, a Clown Pleco and an Electric Blue Acara. I'm looking at getting a 75 gallon to be my entry into larger tanks. I love the geophagus and was wondering how mixing a few types will go. You mentioned some things about having different "types" together in that family so I want to be sure I do the right thing. Any quick advice would be so much appreciated.
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
I generally stay away from mixing them for a couple reasons. 1) I don't want them to hybridize. 2) Sometimes the weaker species get bullied by the stronger ones. That being said, it might be cool to have a male and a few females in a 75 gallon of one species like tapajos, jurupari or winemilleri. :-)

And also the amounts of each one as well?

As long as your water parameters are ok for them they would probably get along just fine. You could easily do 6 each to start.

Hey Jason, question for ya. I've got a pair of (what I was told were) Redhead Tapajos. I've had them since they were about an inch. Now they are about 4.5 inches and they have all the markings of Tapajos apart from the red heads and, most importantly, they constantly fight each other, locking lips, facing off and I never see them apart from feeding times. Could i have been sold some kinda hybrid??

Are the Geophagus tapajos able to sift the caribsea eco complete substrate? Is there another black sand or just another sand in general that you would recommend for this species? I'm kind of torn between getting those darker colors with a dark substrate once they become adults and the possibility they would exhibit more natural sand sifting behaviors on a finer substrate.

I'm brainstorming for stocking a 75/90 gallon tank. I really want the core group of a severum, 3 geophagus, a red tailed shark, and a blue lobster. I know the crayfish (lobster) and red tail shark can be too aggressive/problematic, but I would love some type of "swarm" in this tank too and was thinking of rummy nose tetras. They're typically mid/upper tank swimmers. Am I crazy? Could this work?
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
If it's a 75 gallon I might only go with the geos and not the severums (or limit it to one severum). The red tail will be hit or miss with the mix - it might work (it did for us), but it might not. I might try something a little bigger than rummy nose for the schooling fish (maybe something the size of black phantom tetras) just to make sure they don't get eaten by a full grown severum.

Can I put 6 neon tetras, 2 powder blue gouramis and one swordtail fish in a 10 gallon tank?
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 4 жыл бұрын
So, if I were setting up a 10 gallon I would probably put the neons in with a single honey gourami instead (less aggressive). You could try a single dwarf if you want, but two will usually fight - even in large tanks. The sword might be an issue, just because of their potential size - 4-5" in some cases. Believe it or not, the males can be fairly aggressive too. Probably wouldn't touch the neons, but the gourami, maybe?

What do you think? Have you kept them in a community tank? I'm told that red shiners can be a little nippy. Have you found that to be true?
