I wrap my pump in a sock and it helps A LOT
@chaosindustries2506
@chaosindustries2506 4 жыл бұрын
wrapping in socks and sponges are great also but buy one that turns down get the sweet spot and have big bubbles without the stone in it they move water better through the top tube especially if they fill to the edges of the up tube that will move max fluid through the sponges, just basic fluid dynamics. but putting the pumps in sponges and sock and wrapping it tight to muffle pump sound, is actually a big fire hazard so put that stuff in a fire bin like a big metal can or something just in case.

You can also run a sponge filter off a powerhead, just attach the uplift tube over the powerhead intake. My dad used this set up. Powerhead sponge on one side of the tank and a only air sponge filter . One thing I have noticed is how hard it is to actually find sponge filters in stores now. You won't see them in big box stores, because they aren't designed to have you constantly replacing or buying filter parts or cartridges. Sponge filter the industry standard for generations. They are simple and easy and that is why they will always be a staple of the aquarium industry..

Breaking up bubbles inside a sponge filter also increases the surface area of the air that creates the Venturi effect... Increasing fluid flow...
@3dbrink409
@3dbrink409 4 жыл бұрын
Nope, same flow rate from your air pump. Just smaller bubbles instead of bigger bubbles = same surface area and actually less flow because of back pressure.

Great vid as always. If a sponge filter is in a tank primarily for biological filration and air, on average how often should you clean it? In your linked vid you mention cleaning about once a week with no problems. But if it was only for biological would it be good to wait longer? Also I think you should do a test with a few of your tanks that have sponge filters primarily for biological filtration. Try not using a sponge filter at all! Maybe the degree to which they help biological filtration in many of your tanks is negligible.
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 5 жыл бұрын
Very good questions. I clean them once per week because that helps them do a decent job of mechanical filtration. You are correct, in some of my lightly stocked tanks, once they are properly cycled, the need to even a sponge filter is reduced. I've had a couple small tanks with no traditional filtration, just air, and they are working out fine. Both are planted, lightly stocked and have been up for over a year before I stopped worrying about traditional filtration.

This video was so very helpful I've been into the aqurium hobby for a yr and a half, I have: Molly's, platys, balloon Molly's, Cory catfish, dwarf sucker catfish. So I was going through so many hang on filters was at a loss my snail shells from a snail infestation were sucking into the filter and destroying it also our power goes out often, so I researched more and came across this, it's been almost a month of using the sponge filter u recommended for the shorter tanks and my tank has never looked better, my fish look way nicer and overall presentation is amazing I just sinse the sponge weekly as recommended and do weekly water changes and it's been great thanks for ur recommendation on sponge filters! Hi Jason, I thought this was a fantastic video. This was perhaps the most thorough video I have seen on sponge filters. I personally use the Hydro Pro 3 and 4 in my tanks with Never Clog Air Stones and check valves. I’m setting up another 20L that I want to put some more Shell Dwellers; I find the Multies to be fascinating. The same two in my tank now spawned again in the same shell with their older brothers and sisters. Now I have two groups in the same shell with the same female. The male stands guard close by also. Anyways, I am going to share your video in my group if you don’t mind. Thanks very much for sharing.

Bro thank you so much my guy, I have 2, 10 gallon tanks that I'm planning to have betta in. The tanks themselves are cycling right now. I have HOB filters currently but I'm making my switch to the sponge filter. Thank you for your video
