What's the difference between Great Britain and United Kingdom?

People often use the terms "Great Britain" and "United Kingdom" to mean the same thing, but there is a difference between the two.
Great Britain is an island off the northwest coast of Europe. It is made up of three countries: England, Scotland, and Wales. Great Britain is the largest of the British Isles, and people often just call it "Britain."
On the other hand, the United Kingdom is a country made up of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom is a sovereign state that includes Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The United Kingdom is a country and is independent of Europe, while Great Britain is an island.

My apologies!!! The information is partially incorrect. Isle of Man and Channel Islands are crown dependencies and not part of the UK. If you’re still a bit confused over the differences, here’s a quick summary: The UK - a sovereign state that includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great Britain - an island situated off the north west coast of Europe. British Isles - a collection of over 6,000 islands, of which Great Britain is the largest. England - a country within the UK.

True, I can add the following and you welcome to think about it !! When Great Britain was formed in 1707 by merging the kingdoms of Scotland and England, it already has the territory of Canada and North America and tens of British isles under the British Crown and continued to expand to include Australia and New Zealand. Therefore, Great Britain includes England, Wales, Scotland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and so on. Northern Ireland was part of the Kingdom of Ireland which was independent from Great Britain until 1801. that’s why it’s said in the Canadian and Australian and NZ constitutions Great Britain and Ireland and after 1922 it becomes Great Britain and N Ireland and since Canada and Australia and New Zealand are still under the British Crown, it’s plausible to continue to use Great Britain as before to include these nations regardless whether they have confideral parliaments or not.

Uk is in the continent of Europe always has been, the European Union which the UK called Common Market in the 1960s and 1970s, was originally meant to make things easier for businesses to trade without red tape but by the 1980s it transformed into a corrupt political organisation, it is the EU that UK came out off not the continent and I still remember people here in UK worrying that the UK won't be in the Eurovision anymore which was rather silly of them considering the UK was in the Eurovision over a decade before conservative prime minister Ted Heath took UK into the common market in the early 1970s

Its like the difference between the USA and North America. The collective name for all the group of islands is "British Isles". The biggest island with the group of islands is called "Great Britiain" (not because it is a wonderful place, but because it just happens to be the biggest. But the naming of islands is separate from the countries (ie who's in charge). The two biggest countries are the United Kingdom and the Republic of Island. You are correct! My apologies, the information was partially incorrect. The UK - a sovereign state that includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great Britain - an island situated off the north west coast of Europe. British Isles - a collection of over 6,000 islands, of which Great Britain is the largest. England - a country within the UK.

I beg to differ. The geographical name, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is a group made up of two nations, England and Scotland, a Principality which is Wales and a Province which is Northern Ireland. Great Britain is therefore two nations and one Principality. The term, United Kingdom is a political grouping, not a geographical one and it is so often mis-used by map makers.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island often gets called England by mistake (to the ire of the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish) when, of course, England Is only part of it. The abbreviations UK, Britain and GB are all terms that include Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is no wonder the non British get confused. I think the fact that the seat of power for the UK monarchy is in England compounds the confusion.

This is partially incorrect. Great Britain is the largest island in the archipelago of islands and doesn't include any other island i.e. Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, etc. The island of Great Britain contains the Capital Cities of England, Scotland and Wales. However, there are smaller islands off the coast that are not part of Great Britain, but are still in the territories of England (eg Isle of Wight), Wales (eg Anglesea) and Scotland (eg Isle of Skye). The United Kingdom is, as stated, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and all the islands belonging to those countries. It's flag is the Union Jack. The United Kindom does not include the Isle of Man or the Channel Isles - these are Crown Dependencies outside of the UK and not part of the four Nations of the UK. The British Isles is the outdated name, inherited from Roman times, given to ALL of the islands in the archipelago, including the island of Great Britain and the island of Ireland (which, given the political tensions in Ireland, is why it is outdated). It includes the Isle of Man (which sits between England and Ireland), but not the Channel Islands (which is closer to France). Modern terms for the British Isles inlcude the "Atlantic Archipelago" or the "Anglo-Celtic Isles" - which I kinda like. The term "British" is a loose term (sort of like Roman) and is a bit of a hangover from the days of Empire. It is often used to describe people from the United Kingdom - although many people from the four Nations would wince at the term... and that includes English people. On the flip side, there are people from the British Overseas Territories (i.e. Fawklands, Gibraltar) who very proudly refer to themselves as British. Cheers!

@@overwatch17 False. Ireland was called Hibernia by Ptolemy's maps. The term British Isles is a title of empire. It hasn't been around 1000 years or anything close to that. It's been around since the time of British empire and it ended being a correct term 100 years ago when most of the island of Ireland gained independence and went back to what it was for the vast majority of recorded history... i.e. Not a British isle.
