This album, when it came out in 1982--two years prior to Purple Rain--was THE album that turned me into a hardcore convert to Prince's music, so it has a special place in my heart. But I love all his albums. 1999 was Prince's first 'cross-over' album where as an African American artist he was able to break through the glass ceiling and enter the mainstream (predominantly White) music radio stations and charts. This album was actually very successful, with I think two top-15 Billboard hits ("1999" and "Delirious") and a top-10 hit with "Little Red Corvette" (#6 on Billboards chart). So Prince was already becoming a household name across the U.S. with this record. Then with Purple Rain he became a phenomenal success, taking the world by storm. I'm so glad you are reviewing the album to get a more rounded view of who Prince was at the time, and his versatility. Plus you are hearing the full album versions of three of his most well-known hits that established him as a music star, and these were the versions that radio stations played all the time back in the day. But this current generation tends to learn about Prince through his videos--which I absolutely recommend you do after reviewing the album, as he was a great performer and entertainer in addition to his other skills) and the videos are usually done to the radio edited versions that cut the song off a minute or two before the ending. Prince was an incredible singer, musician and songwriter with a style that back in the '80s was very distinctive, bold, and electrifying. I hope you continue to do reactions to his music. Enjoy the ride! 💜

I am LOVING your Prince journey. 1999 was my introduction to Prince. I was 11 when it came out and became obsessed immediately and have loved Prince ever since. My father actually took the cassette so he could listen to it. I just knew he was going to confiscate it from me. Instead, he gave it back and told me not to let my younger siblings hear it. Looks like I’m going to have to join you on Patreon so I can see the full reaction and get early access to your P reactions. Congrats on going the KZfaq route full time. That is awesome!!! Looking forward to your deeper dive into Prince! 💜💜💜

Little red corvette is Prince’s first mega hit on the pop charts. Which until this song was mainly on the R&B charts(I wanna be your lover was number 12 on pop charts ; LRC reached number 6 on the pop charts.)

It's fun watching your reaction to Prince. 1999 is my number one, favorite album. Sign of the Times by Prince is my number 2. 1999 was his 5th studio album so maybe check out his earlier work. For You is his 1st album, 1978.

Good prince shows to check out: Houston 1981 "Making of the rain" prince debuting purple rain material in front of a live audience. When u hear purple rain on this show, thats the version that ends up on the album, he added the orchestra later. Lovesexy 88 germany, high energy show, does all bis hits in medley form. All on you tube, if you react to any if them, u can probably get four-five songs in a ten min video. Most songs were 2-4min All his shows were high energy.

This is the b side to the 1999 single. Live sounds better, when u hear the actual song, it's just him and the piano. "How come u don't call me, anymore?" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nOCbm8uC3LirkYk.htmlsi=ict1z-TUO0LZw32H This is how a prince show looked in that era: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5ymd9ucppiqpXU.htmlsi=3RHqEDuS2SuW7H_n This tour was prince, vanity 6 and the time, called triple threat. This clip is just prince s show, but this tour was also based on purple rain movie and what was going on. It was battle of the bands, literally. Prince vs the time. Prince would give them the music, they d be rehearsing, he d come in w a tape and say "play this" "When did u work on this?" The time would ask, he d say "I finished it 3am this morning. The Time were hood guys, and they were being all the brothers to the shows. Got to the point where the time was blowing prince out every night, so much so he either gave them less time to get dressed, as they played for vanity 6, unseen or he just left them off the shows in major markets, New York, Chicago, maybe Detroit. Prince and Morris day were frienemies

Cool reaction. "little red Corvette" was talking about her va Jay Jay. It was also the song, along w Billie jean to break the color barrier on mtv as prince and Michael were the first to be played in heavy rotation. When you get a chance, check out a prince concert from 1982/83, he does a combo of "controversy and 1999 material. Another song from that era that didn't make the album was "purple music" u might dig that too

Ahhh, thanks for the thoughts on that one Marcus, and for watching with me! 😋 I have reacted to his Glam Slam concert, which is on Patreon - is that what you mean? And will check out the 'purple music' - my next Prince reaction though will likely go riiiiight back to the beginning and his first ever album! 😜

@@Room2703Reacts glam slam concert was probably after 1994, that's around the time he opened glam slam clubs. 1999 tour w songs from this album was 1982/83 featured prince, the time, and vanity 6. B side of 1999 was "how come you don't call me, anymore?" A classic bluesy number, just him and the piano. Once u hear that song, then it sounds ever better live on that 1999 tour. Going back to the beginning "for you' and "prince" , first two albums has prince playing every instrument, singing every part. He wasn't touring then, once he started touring, he got the band together. Songs from "for you" 1977 era that didn't make the album were "we can work it out", "wouldn't you love to love me" and "making it through the storm" "Prince" the second album, the recording engineer said he just watched prince play every instrument, count himself in, all he did was hit record. Usually the way prince made a record was he d record the drums first, then bass, then guitar, then he d add the vocals at the end

Just subbed to your channel. As a massive Prince fan I'm afraid I have to agree with you on the synth part of Delirious, it's so 80's cheese. Probably the worst song on 1999, even though its still catchy.
