As a world premier!...I remember his then fiancee (Who if im not mistaken is the chick on the video) Was talking to one of the hosts about making it before they played the video...DAMN DUDE! You want soul? You want a funky old school Rhythm and Blues vocal lick? Listen at 2:56 when Prince sings, "...if you're looking for a man that will have ten women and confuse it all with his wealth..." - at the end of that line - at 3:05 - Prince ad libs, "..listen here...". His vocal inflection on those two little words is pure "James Brown/Wilson Pickett Good God" soul singing. Somebody out there will understand what I'm talking about.

Unfortunately I only had the opportunity to see Prince live once in my life but it was unforgettable !!! He opened with 'The One' and I was nailed to the ground and breathless. I will never forget you, what a loss that you are no longer there but you will live on forever thanks to the treasures you left for us. Gracias

If I date a man, this song is a must listen...cause if the listener calls Prince 'soft' or 'corny' then he's not for me. But if the listener is nodding his head, and asking me to play it again...then we've got a chance. That's one test that cannot be failed in my book!

The version he wrote with Mayte’s name in it … is simply beautiful also…. However it’s a personal cut, never released…Mayte did a dance to it as a tribute to him last year… it was heartbreakingly gorgeous

I think you're referring to the full-length version (7 min. 5 sec.) of this song. That's where Prince sings his then-wife Mayte's name, ending the lyrics. The version heard here is missing a couple of minutes of instrumental music that's been edited out. The full-length, 7:05-minute version of "The One" was released on the New Power Soul album by The NPG in 1998. (To hear that version, search KZfaq for a video titled 'Prince & The New Power Generation - The One'. He sings Mayte's name starting at 5:08.) And I couldn't agree more: "The One" has always been such a gorgeous, sultry, sensual ballad.... Prince slayed on this. O(+>

Well, so this song is on New Power Soul, the 1998 album by The NPG (New Power Generation), the name of Prince's backing band in the 1990s. Prince is singing the lead and background vocals, and he wrote it I'm sure, probably doing some of the instruments (Rhonda Smith is smoking on that sultry bass) but my guess is you might not find this gorgeous ballad on streaming services at first because technically this is a song by The NPG, *not* Prince. (Or maybe I'm wrong and it's not on streaming under either name.)
