Something that I really enjoyed that my DM did when we went through this campaign was when we fought the third prophet (who we one-shot), the prince of elemental evil was still summoned, but weakened. So we got to fight two of the princes, one nerfed, the other at full strength.

Not sure why you ONLY have 6 k subs. Your information density is very high and clear presentations make this a treat.

Been running this with my group. I feel it's a bit too open ended. As DM I've tried to sway the party to take out the surface outposts so they are of appropriate level later on but they ignored my leads and are approaching the temple of Elder Eye at level 6 when they should be 10. They have retreated to rest after each encounter in Fane of the Eye. They are still determined to plunge deeper.

I found this consistent issue for my players that the adventure is really fluffing my players pillows. A lot of the encounters that are pretty standard are nearly tpking the party. I gave them a little faster level up to 4 even then they nearly wiped halfway into the first water cult base. I also found a lot of the open ended side quests to be really bland when I ran them by the book for my players so I've been more or less heavily editing a lot of the side quests they've encountered for more entertainment. Is this campaign supposed to be this brutal on them. It's a little hard for me as a dm to grasp their struggle as well but they all almost died on 3 occasions. Basically every session.

Hello good sir. Wonderful review. I have a quick question; What tiles would be great for 5th edition(Includes Tyranny of Dragons and Elemental Evil)? I need tiles because it helps to visual aid more(for me) than 'theatre of the mind'. Thank you in advance! You gained a new sub :)

AverageCoder Thanks for subscribing. The best bet for tiles would be the D&D Essentials Tiles Master Sets. They released three of them, The Dungeon set and the Wilderness sets are both fantastic, the City set is actually not that great. You can find them on Amazon at a decent price, and local shops may still be able to order them in.

I don't understand how a module can be "reviewed" unless it's been played at the table. This is more like a summary of the story with brief commentary on what the reader finds interesting. What is a good read isn't always a good game.
@DravenSwiftbow
@DravenSwiftbow 7 жыл бұрын
Most campaign reviews I have ever watched for 5th Edition have come from people reading the adventure and providing their opinions on what they read. To play through the entire campaign could take months of time. The purpose of the review is to let people know what is in the product and then they can decide if it is something that interests them. Also reviews are primarily searched for and viewed within a few weeks of release.
@theDMLair
@theDMLair 7 жыл бұрын
That's a fair point. I have noticed that trend. I suppose my comment was aimed at "reviews" in general then. What sounds interesting reading the book varies wildly from what works at the table. For instance, it's one thing to say, "You can infiltrate and become one of the cults." or "The module allows you to completely bypass the surface cult if you roleplay it well." But what happens when the level 5 characters bypass Sacred Stone Monastery (designed for a 5th level party) and find themselves in the Temple of Black Earth (designed for a level 8 party)? It's either one hellova dungeon crawl, a TPK, or turn around and retreat. It's one thing to talk about how cool and sandboxy it is that a group could find themselves in over their heads like that. It's quite another to deal with a frustrated group of players who do the same thing twice (with different cults) and finally turn to the DM and say, "Please just tell us what order the designers made this to be played in." My point is that reviewing a product after the person has ran the module with his group allows insights into how the module would actually work at the table. And that is a "real" review, IMO.
@DravenSwiftbow
@DravenSwiftbow 7 жыл бұрын
That is a fair point, but as I said it would take months to play through the entire campaign. The players in various groups may also decide to investigate different groups, explore the Elemental Nodes in different order, so even if I did run the game my experience may vary wildly from others. RPG's are unique in that the players drive the narrative. It's not like a movie where everyone is experiencing the same thing. That said if I were to run this campaign I would post videos about my experiences, like I am doing with my Curse of Strahd campaign. Reviews can be tricky, for example people reviewing video game RPG's. Those games may have hundred' of hours of gameplay, but they won't have time to play the entire thing and sometimes have to base their review off of 6-12 hours of play. The point is to spell out the adventure as written. If that interests people, then they may decide to purchase it. If the premise doesn't interest them then they may pass.

@DravenSwiftbow
@DravenSwiftbow 8 жыл бұрын
+Ernie Street It depends on the kind of game you want to run. The Tyranny of Dragons is much more linear but over all has a more epic feel to it. Princes of the Apocalypse is more open ended but the adventure as written only has the players facing one Prince of Elemental Evil, so over all it may not feel like as much of an accomplishment as defeating a God. "Princes" is only one book with extra player options as opposed to the two books for the Dragons campaign. Out of the Abyss is also an option. This probably didn't help much, but if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

DravenSwiftbow No that helps thank you! I've been a player for years but not so much on the Dming side. I think the Dragons would be a good start for me with how it's fashioned. I'll move on to the others in time. Cheers.

The idea is that the threat spans the planes. The Elder Elemental Eye is the background threat but the adventure itself focuses on the Princes of Elemental Evil and their individual cults.

Wait if the players came from the lost mine of Phandelver at level 5 would that mean they would be level 17 by the end?
@DravenSwiftbow
@DravenSwiftbow 7 жыл бұрын
They should still be 15th once the Campaign ends. The difference in XP's from 3rd to 5th is, I believe 5600. Which is far less than the difference between 15th and 16th Level. If you use the Milestone method, then you may want to withhold giving the players Level 6 until it is appropriate for the Campaign.

It depends on the group and what they are interested in. I would personally choose Curse of Strahd. Princes of the Apocalypse is a good adventure, but does rely heavily on Dungeon Crawling which players can loose interest in. Curse of Strahd has the better story in my opinion

I played in this module for a while before the game fell apart after a near-TPK. The reason we let it go at that was that us players didn't care: at no point did we have a clear understanding of what was going on or why we should be murdering all these cultists. It did not appear as though the book gave a reason why we should be murder-hoboing our way through this adventure. Now I have not read the book, and maybe that is in there, but that was our problem.

You should be trying to rescue prisoners, from the dwarven delegation. Thats the main hook. The DM also has the option to use cult reprisals, for each chapter, to keep the impression of the cultist threat ongoing. I think that having your players aligned with one of the five major factions, is vitally important to the hook of this adventure.

How long would it take to play through?
@DravenSwiftbow
@DravenSwiftbow 6 жыл бұрын
It depends on a number of things, like how often you run (weekly, bi-weekly or monthly) how many players are in the group, how long each session is etc. I typically run either bi-weekly or monthly for about 3-4 hours each session. I feel like I could get 8-12 months of gameplay out of these campaigns.

I've been playing this campaign for a few months now and although I'm not an experienced master in fifth edition I was a DM yaers ago with AD&D. I am finding this campaign hard to master: the whole sandbox open world "do what you want" concept is nice but translated in actual gameplay fails; if the PC choose to things in the "wrong" order the will end up in a section of the adventure not designed for their level and either find it way too easy o just die. Second and I think worse is the fact that the book is full of names of people, backgrounds and other information which is nearly impossible to keep in mind but information the master really needs.. well he'll have to make up. the point is that these cults aren't doing anything dangerous for all chapter 3. Why should a party of adventurers want to go after them? The book hints to "monsters appearing in the valley (Faerun is crawling with monsters what makes the Dessarin valley different?) and some "elemental apocalypse" getting nearer but actually for all chapter 3 it's the PC that are attacking the cults wile the cults are doing nothing at all to deserve this attention. Yes, some peasants go missing, some monster appear here and there.. hardly the stuf for heroes. So why should the characters go after these harmless cults? For example in "hoard of the dragon queen" character knew that the cult wanted to summon tiamat on the prime material and that that was indeed dangerous. Here we don't really know what these cult's aims are and what they are doing to achieve these aims. They are just there, posing no real threat to anybody. There is no sense of epic struggle in this campaign, no sense of threat or evidence of impending evil. Masters have to make up something to get the PCs engaged with the campaign. I think the book could be a bit more specific on what the characters need to prevent other than fight a few cults of fanatics as you could find thousands of in Faerun.

Your comments are very accurate!! There's a LOT of stuff/people/names to remember. Many timed the cultists appear harmless or even friendly. This is appropriate. I found a very helpful DM supplement in the Dungeon Masters Guild called Defenders of Dessarin Valley. It was about $10. It has GREAT maps, photographs, handouts etc PLUS it helps organize the information as to whats really important, and what isn't. When the party doesn't know the cultists are evil, let the cultists manipulate the party into attacking either monsters or rivals. If the party go toward an area that will get them killed, give them in-game cues (corpsrs of dangerous beasts, fleeing NPC's etc) to ler them know. If they choose to continue, LET THEM! There might be good stories in those TPK's...

We have 2 DMs. My friend won the toss and got "Hoard". I went to buy it. We are currently playing through his, and reading this book almost felt to me like cheating. I am not sure how close they truly are , but it was close enough for me not to purchase it. That is a sad fact for me, I looked forward to this book for a while.

Damaged Dice The overall experiences are different, however it is another campaign battling cultists so if you're running for the same group that completed the Tyranny of Dragons it could feel like more of the same. I think the Elemental Cults are overall more interesting and I think the role-playing aspects of uncovering the cults in the early stages of the campaign will be a lot of fun. Once you get past that point however it might become something of a grind

With your review, I may still buy it for the information it gives, but Wizards is going to have dig a bit deeper. Now that they have shown that they can make great products, they cannot dip back into the same well twice, back to back.

I'm approximately halfway through running this adventure (the party are 7th level). This review is very accurate. This is NOTHING LIKE Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat. The villainous cults are different in flavor, but mostly the sandbox nature sets this one apart. My players sometimes feel unsure of which direction to go in, but that's because there are MANY things happening. They get paralyzed into inaction out of fear of doing the 'wrong' thing. There is a lot to do and they can't save everyone!!

I like the adventure BUT I also had a great many issues. SPOILERS BEWARE: 1. I didn't like the the Elemental Evil isn't gone into. There is more detail on the evil emental Eye in the conversion for alternate settings than in the actual campaign adventure. WTF? 2. faction leaders etc, aren't detailed, 3. friendly NPCs are really only given name/race/class descriptions. That's not good enough. 4. I didn't like that the adventure spent all of its end portion in a big megadungeon with everyone thrown together. That's LAME. I don't see parties enjoying going back and forth to the dungeon numerous times. If you have a big playground like the Realms USE IT! Don't keep things confined to this small boring area. 5. If at the end you have chance of fighting one of Elemental Princes on their own plane WOTC should have included details on that not hand waved it.
