Princess Alice of the United Kingdoms (1843-1878) was the second daughter of Queen Victoria, who was known to aspire to follow Florence Nightingale as a nurse.
Her first tragedy struck six months before her marriage when Prince Albert fell fatally ill and died in December 1861.
Princess Alice married Louis IV, the Grand Duke of Hesse and By Rhine. Her life in Darmstadt was relatively impoverished, but they had six beautiful children.
When Hesse became involved in the Austro-Prussian War, the heavily pregnant Alice devoted much of her time to managing field hospitals and treating soldiers in Darmstadt.
In 1573, her second tragedy struck when her youngest son, Fredrich, fell from a window and died as he could not heal due to Hemophilia.
Then in 1578, all her children contracted Diphtheria during an outbreak in Darmstadt, when her youngest daughter Princess Marie choked to Death on 16th November 1878.
Princess Alice nursed and consoled her other children after they learned of Marie’s Death. She kissed her son, Ernest Louis, to calm and comfort him.
A few days later, Princess Alice began showing signs of Diphtheria infection and died at 35 on 14th December 1878, exactly 17 years after Albert’s Death.
