Me too. Although I'm a Kenyan I can sing this anthem offhead in Swahili. In the 80s we were taught in Kenyan schools as a moral support and solidarity with our South African brethren during the Apartheid era. We sang it every Monday and Friday during school assembly. Years later in 2012 at the London Olympics, a Kenyan friend in the Olympics team cheering squad said they bemused other foreign spectators during Caster Semenya's win medal ceremony! Waving Kenyan flag but singing along to South African national anthem was a spectacle. To them S.African win was an African win! Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika Mungu Ibariki Afrika God Bless Africa

21st century and you still say "white people". Well that's dumb...
@zitchellmufelt
@zitchellmufelt 9 жыл бұрын
Derson Tveloso His usage of the term "white people" was not intended as a racist one, but rather as an observance of the brilliant cultural diversity and fellowship of our time that simply did not exist even 30 years ago. Under the strict regime of South African apartheid, this song became an anthem of the opressed black African people; the notion that a white person would ever sing it was, quite frankly, ridiculous. Such was the divisive racism brought to pass by apartheid. Through the hard work and long-suffering of many courageous individuals, such as Nelson Mandela, apartheid was ended and through the years people of all color, both in South Africa and around the globe, have come to embrace racial amd cultural. Thus, it is truly remarkable and a blessing to live in a world where white people can, and do, sing this song. Hardly dumb, if you ask me.

fyi young angry people, I learnt Nkosi Sikelele Afrika in 1977 at a multiracial school in the heart of Zululand, where I've lived for 40 of my 46 years... It was a beautiful hymn (1897) long before it was "claimed" by the ANC. I think it is a sad and undignified that you use this hymn to encourage more conflict...The very same hymn that is asking God to bless us and if you are tempted to send this old whitey back to where she comes from, be warned...that place in my heart that I hold dear is Zululand! My ancestors arrived in KZN in 1820 AD, Shaka's ancestors arrived in about 1500 AD.... and they stayed because it was worth it. We are all here because of the choices made by our ancestors, the Nguni just got here first! So before you lash out, sing it in your heart, spread the love and the blessing.
