As a POD seller for the past two years, can confirm that everything said in this video is true 😅. It’s not passive, it’s not simple. The steps are simple, growing the business to be profitable (making it a full time income) is not so simple. I want to open a Shopify store but feel lost in terms of getting customers to that store. Etsy has the benefit of having those customers already so I feel like it’s a good place up get started. Now that I’ve done that with over 14,000 sales, I’d love up build a Shopify store for more control over my business and hopefully more profit. My Etsy store is general (many niches). Do you recommend picking one of those successful niches for a Shopify store rather than having multiple niches? I’m wondering what makes more sense since I’ll have to have a different marketing strategy.

I agree with most of what you say, except about Etsy being a matter of chance. I put a lot of work into my listings, from product research to design to SEO optimization. There are some great tools out there to help with all these things. I also use tools to track the performance of my listings, just like I would with ads. So it's definitely not a matter of 'spray and pray' or luck! I would never blindly design and list a hundred designs. Another thing: I can never understand why people think that listing on Etsy is any more competitive than putting your modest ads out into the Metaverse, where you're effectively bidding for attention against big brands. What could be harder than that? Don't forget, Etsy doesn't just show your listings on Etsy - they're on Google too. The biggest difference between the platforms, imho, is that Etsy is mostly 'pay as you succeed' whereas Shopify/ads is mostly 'pay as you go', whether you succeed or not. The latter can be tough for beginners.
@shimmymorris1
@shimmymorris1 Ай бұрын
At the end of the day, all the seo and all the hard work with etsy and it's still upto the algorithm. That's what i was getting at. I'm in no way bashing etsy, I think etsy is a good choice for sure! just a very different one to shopify. With FB ads, i have found i'm not really competing much with similar stores as not that many people are doing this. I'm definitely not competing with big brands as it's a totally different product. The main difference is, i'm paying for people to come to my website, if i pay, they'll come. That i can be sure of. I do see etsy as pay as you succeed, but i don't see shopify as pay as you go, because you're building more than just quick sales. We now have over 1000 customers that we could email and get sales without any ad cost. So i think shopify is more, pay to grow in a way. but again, i don't have anything against etsy :D

My main concern has been quality control. I’ve been back and forth with Printify for weeks. My designs are not uploading. I’ve tried everything they suggested and am still waiting on the tech team to get back to me. Printify on the other hand the designs published and uploaded to my website immediately. I like having control so I’ve decided to just upload all my designs manually to my website and then purchasing the requested product through Printify until we can figure out why the designs aren’t publishing. Printify keeps getting great reviews over Printful so I’ll work around them. Long story short I got even more excited when I realized I didn’t have to deal with Amazon, Etsy or anyone else. My customer is MY customer. Who could potentially become a fan!?! That’s worth the work to me.

For Aussies it is about $59/month and if you pay for the full year it is about $525 for the year. Not cheap. I agree about reviews. I will shop on a website without reviews if they have everything else filled out properly. Eg their about page, contacts, etc. A lot can be said for a well put together website even without reviews. There is a lot of trust in that. Often reviews can be faked anyway.

@@shimmymorris1 We pay practically double to what the UK and US do. So if you are paying per month at $39 USD it would be: GBP approximately $31/month. @@SalunyaKayell i totally hear you. It should all be the same in USD though. I really don't see it being a big cost in the grand scheme of things. I only recommend signing up once you're fully ready to go live, i.e. all designs are done, all mockups, everything. You say Shopify is $29/month, but how much do you spend (or would you spend if you weren't a partner) for Shopify extensions (add-ons)? I'll guess about $150 to $200/mo for a simple store. A lot more to get fancy. It may be much less than what it'd take to start a brick-and-mortar store, but people are looking at starting online businesses because of the relatively inexpensive startup cost.

What would be the benefit/difference between a Shopify where your only traffic efforts are ads, and an Etsy shop where you advertise via their Promoted Listings and Offsite Ads? I would assume Etsy is better; you only pay per sale on OSA, promoted are PPC but enables a v small budget, you still get insight into your keywords, and the bonus of organic traffic, plus Etsy's position in Google. I don't know much about Shopify or ads, I assumed the best traffic for that would be Social feed? The lies mentioned : 1) Shopify is expensive - your response, well yeah sortof but $39/$29 a month shouldn't be expensive to you if you are running a good business, if that's expensive do something else. 2) There's no Traffic - your response: well, yeah that's true, but I mean, it's your business, not Etsy so it's your traffic 3) Shopify is too complex - your response, well yeah, that's fair it is more complicated -- I stopped watching here. Shimmy, I think you have valid information -- but a question: Isn't using a clickbait line like "Print on Demand Gurus are lying to you" and then it turns out in the video that you say to each "lie": Well, yeah that's true, but .... then I guess it's not really a lie, is it? And I guess it means that your title is technically ...... a lie. Like you say in other Print on Demand videos about other youtube content makers, I like your content Shimmy, I just don't like lies.. seem familiar?

Sorry but you have put words in my mouth in your comment. And quite honestly, there’s nothing I dislike more than someone saying I said something when I didn’t. I didn’t say “well yea sort of” for Shopify being expensive. I said. Let me put that into perspective. It’s just 2 sales. So no. Shopify is not expensive. In fact I’d argue it’s very cheap for what you get. The same goes for the rest. I can’t be bothered to get into a debate here. But the idea of this video was to share common myths and lies surrounding Shopify. It’s not expensive. You do need your own traffic but that’s not a bad thing like others say it is. And it is complex, again I’m breaking the myth that it’s not a negative that it’s complex. Despite others saying it is… THanks for watching 😊
