The hate Kyla got while in Pristin still angers me to this day. You can never win as a female idol in Korea. If you're a normal weight you get called fat, if you're too skinny they call you a skeleton. I'm just glad that she's happy and living her best life away from the toxicity that is the idol world.

@@xa1239 Yes, that's true, but I was specifically referring to the girls that are on the ends of each of the spectrums (either too "fat" or too "skinny" according to netizens), not the idols that get praised for having the "ideal" figure. Even if you have a great body, netizens love to pick on other features (adittude, personality, etc).

It's extra ridiculous whenever I see kpop fans, especially k-netz fatshame girls who clearly are a healthy weight or AT BEST a few kgs overweight and slightly chubby (normal at that age), whilst one of the most loved and famous male kpop idols out there is Shindong, a morbidly obese man who even talked himself about how badly he needs to lose weight for his heath. Yet he has never gotten as much hate as female idols get for just gaining even the SLIGHTEST amount of weight! Just looks as Jeongyeon from TWICE and all the hate she got and still gets, though in her case the stylists also don't give her properly fitted outfits and make it all worse. Either way it says a lot about Korea and their two-faced mindset, where male idols can often get away with way more then female idols. Not very shocking though in a country where streamers end their lives cause they got accused of being feminists by male streamers and got death threats for it (happened this year, she was named Cho Jangmi, very sad). Misogyny at it again.

The fact that a kind, morally strong, disciplined and principled teenager girl who was never rude to her bullies and had the strength to move on from all this isn't considered a real "idol". Well, you're right. SHE IS A QUEEN. Sincerely, someone who isn't even a kpop fan.

Honestly a lot of korean "idols" aren't really idols in the sense of the word. She is a great idol for anyone. Love yourself, doesn't matter what anyone thinks. I wish she hadn't left than she could have been a role model for how to stand up to bullies but I guess that's to much to ask in the Kpop industry. At least she didn't go on starvation diets.

So it seems to me like complaining that an athletic swimmer needs to be thin to be fast in water, if you didn't want to have that responsibility, why would you pick a vocation that demands you be built that way.

@Muraki Chiyo You're right. You're just generally fatphobic. I assumed you were overweight yourself since you stated you were "thicker." Turns out you just hate fat people. Hunny, you're watching a video about a K-pop idol. If you're into K-pop, then you're already an active participant of toxic internet culture. This isn't really relevant at all, and I didn't ask for your advice over how and were I spend my time. You're just trying to deflect/move the goalpost, eapecially seeing how much your ramble turns into an entire brick of diatribe. You seem triggered. You know that the Haitian guy above said he would consider Kayla skinny? Maybe he's right. Ever consider that your idea of thinness might be rooted in white supremacy?? A black person told you that your opinion of fatness is subjective and you just blow him off to reiterate your SUBJECTIVE opinion on a LITERAL 15 YEAR OLD GIRL'S WEIGHT. (Also weird that you're so concerned with a child's weight). You should be more considerate when conversation pertains to culture, because you look silly when you speak over BLPOC. Also, not true. As long as you're not morbidly obese, which can be measured with a method rooted in science, carrying "extra weight," isn't necessarily unhealthy. In fact, recent studies show that a thin person who practises an unhealthy lifestyle will have more health problems compared to an overweight individual who lives a healthy lifestyle. Please do your research before speak!

I think with the big push for Kpop now has a viable possibility to be successful internationally (and lets face it a lot more fans and money to be made just by sheer population from the United States alone (example California pop. is est 38 mil, South Korea is 51 mil, that's just one state of 50.) ) I think the beauty standard with loosen up, not go away completely, but it would be in there best interest to not force diets or bully people out of the industry because it can have major repercussions on deals and fans in other countries and how they support either the group or the company. Lets face it money talks and will probably be the only thing to really get different looks from idols as a whole. Kyla was such an asset with her skill set that could have been a major hit with international fans, I hope the next generation of girls have a bit more freedom in their appearance.

It’s sad that people lack the basic humanity and, frankly speaking, the class to think it’s okay to bully someone. Clearly this was not restricted to the web since her own production co and the media did some of this as well as the live audience. Bullying is common in kdrama, the U.S., and I suspect it’s universal. That doesn’t make it okay. It’s actually disturbing and a turn off. I was once disgusted by how fans of a U.S. soap opera trash-talked a teen actress because she was portrayed as a villain for the moment (she turned out to be good). This was worse … So called adults attacking her appearance and voice, because they didn’t like her character … This was a teenage actor. I definitely said something about it. We have to do better. Then when she killed herself, it became big news, there were many people mourning and feel sorry for her, they say they will do more to prevent something like it happening again. But people are still attacking her even when she passed away and they are still bullying other idols! The scary thing is that they are able to get away with it and they treat it as norm even they know its not right.

I love the fact that her story didn't change for better because she lost weight, but because she was able to find her own happiness. Your body does not define your value and I think that we need more Idols with natural bodies (doesn't matter thinner or thicker) or the bodies that THEY want to have, so some K-pop fans finally realice that what it's important is not the appearance but the talent and hard work.

As ruthless as it may seem now, back then it was survival of the fittest. ex. Blackpinks Jennie 2018-2019. She had a great figure, an amazing personality, and was a very talented girl who even released her own solo debut! But unfortunately was also a MAJOR kpop punching bag back then because "she looked mean" 😐. Came up with every possible excuse to hate on her after that one online statement by a net. "she dances lazily" "is she glaring??" Knetz- no. Netz in general. They dont care about talent. They dont care about personality or body type! They hate whoever they want and try to justify it with a surface level reason. (Ex. Literally half of momoland.) Times have changed, so it isnt as bad. But back then I can only imagine how hard it must have been to be an idol in korea.

But if every type gets to be a kpop star, then what's so special about being a kpop star? I don't think standards should be lowered. Look at all the successful groups (BP, STAYC, ASSPhuh?, TWICE)- they are all uniformally thin and trim and feminine. None of them are "thicc."
@cookiescream5716

@@stannnleee3440 [be warned, this is a pretty long rant..] so being thin is the only special thing about being a kpop star? I think I may understand what you were trying to say, but you worded it COMPLETELY wrong. (Or i'm wrong and you are actually as blunt as your comment). I understand that kpop isnt just about music. And its not about dance or talent either. Its never been. Idols get surgery upon surgery just to look the part. Im not asking to lower the beauty standard, but to (maybe) be more accepting, not turn idols into ghosts with EDs who only eat ice for lunch, and not to ruin their self esteem because they have a minor muffin top. Its sad. An example is Momo, Jihyo, and jungyeon from twice. Momo- as a trainee (though already particularly skinny) refused to eat normal food. Heard from one of her reality shows she chose to only eat ice for all meals of the day. Jihyo- was told she was too curvy and weird looking to be in the shot, and was asked to step out of it. she hid behind a member after hearing the harsh words. Jungyeon, which happened recently gained weight after coming back from her mental heath hiatus. Instead of coming back to the same warm and loving audience who supported her 7 months ago, she came back to a disgusted one. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kNyajNyDsrqxY3U.html Notice anything about these three girls? None of them are fat, overweight, OR have their guts spilling out of their shirts. They were skinny, but not as skinny as everyone else was. And that was what they got. Im not asking for any standard to be lowered. Im asking for people to stop acting like A-holes and projecting themselves onto their idol.

for me, the worst part of it all is that even in the "we like" and "wee-woo" promotions, kyla was being criticized and yet she went to all the music promotions (stages) and had a beautiful smile, a great stage presence. I can imagine how much she must have suffered, but she was still smiling in all the pristin videos you put in this video. in the pictures too, she was smiling. she went to the fansigns, even though she got all the hate and being ignored, she was still smiling, looked happy/satisfied and did what they asked. i remember when TWICE tzuyu got ignored/badly talked about her at a fansign (I'M NOT COMPARING THEM, JUST COMMENTING), she just lowered the mic and walked away, standing in the corner. Kyla stayed ahead, was happy and faced it. she was so strong. she was only 15, this hurt me A LOT, people can't even think that MAYBE she is so young and can loose a lot of weigh fast, just wait a bit. no, people kept commenting badly, calling her fat, stopped supporting her, and her weight was NORMAL, only the other idols and group members were underweight.

That's disgusting. She was of average weight. In order to lose more weight, she would've had to go into a caloric deficit. If her nutrient intake was average and that's just her body type, this would require starving herself and heavy exercise to get her down to "typical" idol girl group proportions. For a 15 y/o whose brain and body are still in the development process, it could've severely impacted her growth and health. Edit: wow so many triggered people. Yeah I'ma say it, not like a fraction of idols today can sing or rap *they are CASTED FOR THEIR BODIES/ FACE. They're just going to lip sync their whole life anyways* Not like the most talented vocalists Luna, Wendy, Ailee, CL, Wheein & Suhyun are all forgotten and underrated because they're seen as chubby and not pretty/ basic. -Yall know lots of idols are dropouts right? Some idols also got caught fabricating/ cheating on their tests. -Most idols come from rich parents and privileged special idol schools that allow them to study easier than normal students. -Most idols don't qualify for college and have to get in by their reputation or buy their way in. That's why all the flopped idols default to "beauty influencer" after disbandment. -Ntm EVERY idol to date has said their training years were the hardest. Actual idol life is really slow and not difficult (unless you have 50 comebacks a year like twice), so yeah it gets easier after debut and most the things they learned they forget once casted as a visual. *- Idols don't ever say the singing or dancing or long concerts are the hardest part. Every one says dieting is the hardest part or always having to be dressed up bc of paparazzi. LOOKS ARE ALL THAT THEY HAVE TO WORK ON*

in kpop i often feel like, people completely forgot that idols were originally ment to be musicians in the first place. Within the last two decades or so the image of idols shifted from crating music and being an actuall artist to basically prioritysing good choreography and looking pretty and showing off a perfect and flawless image far from realistic standards. It is heartbreaking but not surprising, that lots of kpop fans nowadays can't wrap their head around the fact, that an idol would actually debut for MAKING AND PERFORMING MUSIC as their carreer, to show off talent in music and being a creator of musical art. Cause NO, the job of idols was not ment, to make money of their looks, as many malicous comments sad in the video. Guess what, haters, some idols actually joined into the MUSIC industry to persue crearing and performing music and to make music their live and job. Like, go get a fan of the model industry to see unhealthy beautystandards and cheer for people looking pretty. But can we please make kpop a place again, where some interest at least goes to the music and singing/rapping/composing itself, where musicians are actually ment to make music. That is so sad and so wrong.

You are wrong though. K-pop was originally inspired by the popularity of J-pop and the main job of an idol singer in Japan was to bring happiness to the people, acting cute and being funny. That's why they called idols - because people idolize them. Some of the Japanese idols didn't even had musical/dance abilities and yet they were and are still idols. It's just Koreans took it to the extreme level around 2 generations of idols. The Korean beauty standards got harsher, the training period got harder and the music quality has gotten better. But still, idols were never meant to be musicians and artists but because of K-pop's sudden popularity many companies are trying to outsold one another at certain field. They took the word idol to the extreme level.

Not gonna lie, I was always hopeful that Kyla might potentially change the game for idols. She literally proved what lots of people always try to deny, to this day, that one can perform properly no matter if they are skinny or normal-sized (or even chubby!) and I loved seeing that as a bigger person myself so so much... Seeing how she was basically cursed out of the business is simply heartbreaking considering that true talent is so rare to find in many people nowadays because we are so focused on overperforming at school, at work, etc. and therefore have very little time to explore what's possible...

I remember people saying Kyla looked super unhealthy but now we know she was injured during their 2nd comeback and thats probably why she gained weight resting or possibly because of meds. People say the same thing about skinny idols like Rose claiming she's sick when she shows no signs? Literally idols like Kyla, Rosie, Ailee and Somi can dance and sing just fine with energy, it's not like their weight is stopping them from living their daily lives but fans just LOVE the drama.

Blackpink are the last idols I would really worry about as far as weight. Theyve said they don't diet except mentioning avoiding foods that make them bloated right before doing something, which is normal and fine they're still eating something. Plus, only 3/4 are super super thin. Jisoo is in no way at ALL fat, but I think if YG was pushing them to be stick thin, Jisoo would also be their size. I think Jennie Rosé and Lisa are just all naturally super thin, not because they're starving themselves. I'm not a doctor, so I can't say if they're healthy or not or need to change diet or not. But I don't think they are being mistreated or mistreating themselves.

@@ameliarose47 Jisoo would never be as 'thin' as they are because Jisoo's torso and waist are naturally wider than the other girls' structure-wise. Idk, Jisoo is VERY skinny, her arms are thin and so are her calves, her torso is also skinny, there is essentially no visible fat around it, but her wider bone structure trick people into thinking she's 'thick' when she's honestly about as skinny and around the same weight as the rest of the girls. I went off-topic. But as someone who was a similar body type as Jisoo but a bit more thicker, this always has kind of bugged me when whenever I see her she's just as skinny as the rest but fans call her 'healthy' and 'thick' just to put the other members down. I'm having a harder and harder time seeing the appeal in K-pop. They don't really get famous for their talent or creativity, they get famous when their managers hire good songwriters and choreographers, and have careful marketing. People like them for the image they project: usually a group of talented perfect friends who sing and dance together, and have a perfect life. Usually they have character archetypes and sometimes they go through a period of growth (ie having their first solo) so the fans can be proud of them and get hype. The dark side of kpop is kids being trapped in a company from a young age due to debt, the plastic surgery they pretty much have no choice but to go through with, the mandatory starvation, the dancing until you faint, the no leaving the facility rules, the no forms of outside communication rules, the no dating rules, the like 16 hour plus workday, the fact that they have next to no autonomy in their life at all... almost everyone agrees that it's bad and should stop but the MOMENT someone doesn't do all those things, all the kpop fans just dogpile on them. Everyone knows they're not perfect people and that they don't have perfect lives, but if they ever do anything normal (like having a normal BMI) they get dragged so hard for it. Not so perfect anymore, they're almost like regular people or something! Can't have that. They have to be happy and pretty beyond anything we could ever hope to achieve ourselves

It’s because kpop is a marketing tool for fans to live vicariously through. In South Korea life is very strict and regimented with enormous pressure, so they nitpick as an out. For international fans they’re usually using the group as an emotional outlet of some kind hence all the stan wars. An attack on their group is an attack on their identity. It’s not really gonna change until this current gen that’s into kpop grows up and gets busy with life

This is so sad, a lot of people forget that weight gain isn't always linked to an accessive unhealthy lifestyle. She's obviously worked hard. There is a number of reasons why someone could gain weight. I have worked out every day and changed up my lifestyle to the point of unhappiness all in the name of "losing weight" dispite having healthy habits. Recently, I was diagnosed with a hormonal disorder and it really helped me understand that sometimes these things aren't entirely about dieting or overeating. The most important thing is how good you treat your body, not how skinny you are. Bodies are made different. To have to go through so much body shaming as a teen when your body is still developing and changing is extremely traumatic.
