Just keep on doin' what you do the way you do it....Honesty is a very rare thing on YT and way to many people, using editing, would lead folks to think everything was a slice of Grandmothers peach pie rather than a learning process....

I agree. I have since downloaded some editing software that will allow me to set up different angles and/or positions (such as alternating between me shooting and the targets...and movements between places in one video), but you'll still get the goofs and the misses....I promise that.

Howdy plowboy.......just found your channel per Hickok .45 and I became a new sub! You are beyond words fantastic and a true blue southerner. Been shootin' muzzleloaders for 30 years and just can't get enough of it. Y'alls vids bring a lot of joy to us black powder nuts. Do you have an update on the links for the NOE bullet molds and the Companion to the New Rifle Musket pages as the links are shown as an error. Stay well, stay safe and have a blessed day. Thanks.....from deep in the heart of Texas, John

Wow! You are both kind and generous. Thank you, very much. I really am glad to have you as a viewer and a subscriber to my little hobby channel. I plan to make a video or two this coming week. www.noebulletmolds.com/site/product-category/566 They have changed the bullet mold from the one's in Hickok's video. Looks like they eliminated the deep cavity base pins and that brings the weight up to 674-grains (!). The plug mould is on that page, too. www.archive.org/details/acompaniontonew00compgoog

Great video Plowboy, I am definitely interested to see how they load and above all the accuracy. My P53 Pedersoli has never had any accuracy using the three band minnie, and it is not without trying. Like yourself I also use 3FFF powder, and changed the nipple to use #11 caps. My hunting rifle is the Lyman trade rifle in .50 cal, using a patched round ball and 80 grains of 3FFF, it is dead nuts accurate and a real game getter. Richard from the great white north, "Canada"

There's videos of me shooting these cartridges in my P53 and my JP Murray from nearly a couple years ago on my channel. I plan to do another shooting video with these soon. My P53 shoots 8" high at 25-yards with .575-500 Lee Minies, and about 4-5" high with these, using 68-grains of 3F Goex in both loads. To me, that suggests that these are moving faster and thusly may be fitting the bore better. The .575-500 fits my bore loose, anyway....so much so that when hunting with that Minie I put the ramrod down the barrel periodically to make sure it was still seated (which it was....probably due to the dried SPG). I have no such worries with these paper patched Pritchetts. They still load easy (first shot or 25th shot...they load the same), but there's a much better seal that with naked lubed Lee Minies. The skirts of the cavity on the NOE Pritchetts are pretty thick. They could probably use a heavier charge and yield better obturation and accuracy.

I have never made cartridges, but, did you put the bullet the wrong way round into the cartridge ?
@plowboysghost
@plowboysghost 3 жыл бұрын
Nope. I've demonstrated it in an earlier video and maybe a later one....as well as Hickok45 did in two of his videos with these cartridge he got from me. The bullet faces the center of the cartridge in this style, unlike the federal (U.S.) style cartridge. In the federal style, the cartridge paper is nothing more than a container for the powder and the bullet. With that style you tear it open, dump the powder and then remove the bullet and load it. With the British/C.S. pattern, the cartridge paper is an integral and necessary part of the projectile in that it is effectively a paper patch. You tear open the powder chamber, invert the cartridge, and insert the (now facing UP) paper patched/still wrapped/lubed bullet in the muzzle.

Quick question: Why were the .577 bullets loaded into the cartridges upside down?
@plowboysghost
@plowboysghost 5 жыл бұрын
In this British Pattern 1855 cartridge for the .577 rifle-musket, the bullet diameter (in my reproduction) is .566 and paper patched with the paper dipped in lube. The bullet nose is toward the center so that it may be inserted with the un-torn end of the cartridge paper as one piece. This is different than the federal "Burton" style, grooved, lubed Minie that is introduced to the bore naked/without paper. I find (as the British and Confederate government did) that bore fouling is kept to a very minimum in the British pattern cartridge use since each loading effectively swabs the bore...which is much different than the Federal pattern. The effect of these British pattern cartridges is a sustained fire capability with almost no degradation in accuracy and loading ease from one shot to as many as one could put through it. Confederate tests ended after thousands of rounds through one rifle without cleaning and no issues. They gave up trying to force a failure.

Finally got my mold and started casting. The link for the onion paper takes me to 10lb onion paper rather than 9, is there much of a difference?
@plowboysghost
@plowboysghost 5 жыл бұрын
That's a question I don't have an answer for. When I posted that link it was to 9lb, so someone has changed it on Amazon. I went back into my old bookmarks and it now leads to this 10lb. I don't see much 9lb in a quick google search, so I hope 10lb works. I figure it probably will.

Could you suggest cartridge dimensions for a .50 cal Hawkins rifle, I just finished a St. Louis Hawkins rifle kit and would like to use cartridge for field hunting. Making my own cartridges seems a fun way to improve the experience and my time in the field.
@plowboysghost
@plowboysghost 4 жыл бұрын
It's something i would have to just go through trial and error if I were to develop one from scratch. With this one, I was following a pattern. I would be easier to adapt the federal pattern cartridge construction to yours unless you're running a bullet undersized enough to be paper patched. With this British pattern, the cartridge is a function, integral part of the load...where as a federal pattern cartridge is really just a carrier that is completely discarded after loading.
