I went down the rabbit whole of paper patching in the 1980,S and I used news paper. It worked great.

Eagle Eye, Awesome video. You did a great job of keeping things going but not going to fast for the information. Thank you Nathan

Thanks to you and your uncle for sharing these ideas. I have a 2-groove rifled Lee Enfield with particularly deep rifling grooves. I'm hoping that I will get reasonable accuracy using paper patches. Best wishes from New Zealand.

I know exactly what you mean about kick! I worked a cast 250 grain 2,040FPS PC'd 8mm last year and was glad to be done with the ladder. I'm still looking forward to working it further this year but...dang...that sucker kicks, especially with the skull crusher steel but plate. I've cast a pile of Lyman 311299's, 202 grain for my 06 but haven't started with that one yet.

The old timers (of which I find myself rapidly approaching) used graphite to lube their paper patches. You can get powdered graphite from the lock section of Home Depot used for lubricating the door locks on the house. Hope this helps.

I'm learning on a .338 win mag a 30 06 and 7mm 08. the paper acts as a wedge during sizing and reduces bullet diameter. Therefore the thickness and type of psper is a factor. Another important factor is the numerical difference between your bore and groove and how that affects the ability of the paper to prevent gas cutting. I don't have it dialed by any means but I have found gas cutting to be the single biggest issue against accuracy with cast bullets. At this point I have a 10 shot 4" group at 110 yrd with 220 lee .338 pp .003 x2 wraps. As cast is out-of-round .338 so I paper patch it and size it to .339. IMR 3031 39 grains Winchester large rifle primer. About 2000fps. I only size the enough of the neck to hold the first two driving bands and bell slightly. By reading the size of paper cuttings on the ground in front of your shooting bench u can also learn about your sizing and paper performance. The size of the pieces and how burnt or not and also if the rifling is cutting the paper.

I messed around with paper patching years ago. I just don't have the patience to wrap them anymore. However, you are on to something many crafters overlook, Paper patching can and will improve the accuracy of cast lead bullets if done correctly. it takes a lot of practice, testing, and desire. I started with the age-old Beeswax and Vasolene formula, That work well,, smoked a bit though. I changed to using Rooster Jacket as the final lubricant and paper seal, That stuff worked flawlessly every time. I tried Lee liquid Alox and found that the paper wasn't separating from the bullet and was causing flyers. (I believe) that in theory, the heat needed to realize the paper to come off wasn't happening every time. as soon as I switched to Rooster Jacket all of that went away and shot to shot accuracy improved. That was my experience, Maybe not yours, as people have different techniques in this craft. Good shooting to ya, Dave.

Hey Thor's Axe. Thanks very much for sharing. Great info! I may have to try to setup a slomo camera to capture the muzzle end in how the paper detaches. It seems to confetti about 3 feet infront. Id be happy with MOA then work on this variable. Thanks for letting me know about Rooster Jacket

Hopefully its doing something similar to this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bb6EbKaW0NfGj4E.html

That would be interesting to see. I recovered bullets in the impact area that still had parts of paper on them. That's how I came to that conclusion in my experience. I also was not thinning the Lee Alox out with mineral spirits. So Good shooting and hope things work out. Dave.

Good video, any thoughts on putting a little bit of white glue on the sponge so the patch stays together once it dries?

Can you paper patch jacketed bullets? The movie they did, but everything I've seen is about patching cast bullets. I'm looking to patch .308 to .311

Wow . What a pain in the arse . I know I don’t have the patience for it .

I have used a cigarette roller. One of those that has the belt where you put the tobacco and then roll your cigarette paper in it the I took my papered bullet and put it on a smooth piece of birch board and used another birch wood board to roll it nice and tight. Maybe I was doing it wrong but it works for me. And I used a lot of job rolling papers to make my paper cartridge for my Sharpe's rifle . And my replica colt walker dragoon 44 cal. The man at the store thought I was smoking a lot of weed until I showed him my paper cartridge's . I would buy a whole box of job rolling papers or ez-wider papers . The man thought I was smoking a lot of weed. I told him I'm smoking them all right with triple 7 black powder and lead bullets. I did show him my bullets and my Sharpe's rifle and colt walker dragoon 44 cal and he like to have flipped out.

Do you use 30 cal bullets or a smaller caliber to allow for paper?

They are 30 cal bullets that are sized down to .301. Hoping NOE will do another .301 mold run
