love your videos have fixed my car by myself three times and have now saved about 2500 dollars ,,,, keep them coming !!!!
@theycallmekenny7 жыл бұрын
this fixed my problem. I followed the video exactly disassembled the parts, ran 12v directly to blower motor, put everything back together, and it's working flawlessly. thanks so much! I'm sure this would have set me back a couple hundred bucks to replace the whole part at a mechanic.

Hello Kenny, Pls could U explain how U ran 12V directly to the motor blower. I did the same thing but the motor is now constantly ON & I can't power it OFF through the Temp control

Thank you for posting this video Brian. My local Toyota dealer quoted me a price of $575 to replace the blower fan assy. When I asked for a breakdown, was told $175 for the part and $300 labor. The labor on this repair took 20 minutes and the part was $78 total. I expect the dealer to make a profit but nobody wants to get ripped off. I'm done with my local Toyota dealership.

Thank you for this. The Corolla started using this same part in 2014. I took it apart, tested it hooking up several ways, cleaned and reassembled it. It is working like a charm.
@MichaelMantion11 жыл бұрын
So it fixed itself when you took it apart? I hate it when that happens because more times then not the problem returns. I like it when things stay broken long enough for me to properly diagnose the problem.
@scottfromoahu28966 жыл бұрын
Hey, Brian. Thanks for the video. This is great. Can you link to the resistor part that you diagnosed the problem to on Amazon or put the name in the video's description? Or do you have to buy a complete blower? I could use this for my '08. Mine is intermittent now.
@spelunkerd11 жыл бұрын
You see those PWM circuits all over the place in new vehicles -- they must be more efficient. In this case it's disconcerting you didn't find a problem. Maybe it's one of those solder connections that goes bad as it heats up. Great video, Brian.
@markselle13877 жыл бұрын
This fixed my problem on a 2014 Prius. The fan and resistor are the same. I also experienced the same fix. After detaching the resistor, disassembling it a bit, and reassembling it, it worked again. Go figure. Somehow that thing stops working and giving it some attention gets it working again. I do think I would like to replace the resistor, though, so the video would benefit from providing a part number or link to buy one. If I find that, I'll come back and post the information.
@tommee1053311 жыл бұрын
I believe the signal that controlls it is called PWN or pulse width modulation. It is a much more efficiant way of controlling the speed of a DC motor, the old days it would of been controlled bt a resistor of sort, it means no matter the speed the motor will draw the same and the rest is wasted as heat coming off the resistor. My rad fans in my car is controlled by a PWM signal. Good video Brian

Thank you for creating such an extremely thorough video. Would I take the same steps to replace on a 2008 prius?
@roastlambpie11 жыл бұрын
Hey Brain, Had one on a brand new hybrid Camry with about 10km on the clock it was running on high with key off and away from the vehicle and running the battery flat. The internals of the resistor made it run the whole time. The small wire the resistor sends 5v to the A/C amplifier and the A/C amplifier pulls it to ground. Power and ground is there all the time to the blower motor.
@daveyt48024 жыл бұрын
Just helped a coworker. Same deal. No one had a replacement blower assembly! Wondering if the amplifier assembly could be the problem too. $580 bucks! Seems like it's a PWM controller. Too bad you can't just replace that only. Boneyard may have one.
@kathybaum62352 жыл бұрын
the pulsing is to make the fan speed up or slow down , it's called a [plus width modulator] thats how a DC motor is vaired in speed. A PWM's.are also used to dim or brighten your interior lites.

Thanks for this video. 2018, dealer charged $375 to replace blower motor for a 2007 Prius. Symptom was blower wouldn't stay on, but would cut off and on. Said he replaced the blower motor. I assume this piece is considered a part of the motor, and so I'm still not 100% sure what was wrong, but suspect the motor might have been fine. Loose connection? Next time, gonna ask to get the removed part.

I DO like to find the problem when at all possible, and I'm aware of bulls eye solder failures, (I've done many vids related to those as culprits) but this was NOT working COLD as it came in and hadn't been for 8 months. Weird. Thanks!

Are all the electrical components on the Prius wired up to that same signal channel? In other words, are there different signals to turn on the headlights, etc.

Great video, Brian, thank you for showing us the inside of the fan controller. Just two questions: 1. Why did the customer come to you instead of the dealer? Shouldn't they still be under warranty? 2. At 5:01, you can see an Ethernet port in the passenger dash section. What's that for?

I have an '05 Prius. I always turn off my AC before powering the car off. I used a sunshade. I don't turn on the AC for about a minute after starting the car and and/or getting up to normal speed. (about 35-40). The AC will power on more reliably if on MAX. It will start to blow cold and stay on for about 45 seconds. Then, it starts to fade out and turns all the way off. If I allow it to wind all the way down, I can't turn it back on for about 10 minutes or longer. If I turn it off manually when it first starts to fade, the AC will allow me to turn it back on and get more cold air. (The problem is, I'd have to turn the AC on and off every 20 seconds or so to maintain cold air, and I'm not sure that's good for the car or battery...but I've done it before on my way to a wedding...didn't wanna be soaking wet for photos...and the air blew cold the entire 20 minute ride.) Any advice?

You're exactly right about less power use due to less heat dissipation. it's called pulse width modulation as opposed to resistive circuits. You're dead on man... if you didn't already know that and you just assumed it, you ought to be doing bigger things in life!

No codes, heat works but heats slowly. I have new pump new thermostat, new head gasket new coolant that has been blead.takes about 15 min to get the air to heat up on max setting. Also, when the air is blowing hot finally, when I turn on the ac button but still keep heat on high, the air becomes room temperature. I cant figure it out.

It looks like the fan control unit is using PWM (pulse width modulation) to control the proportion of time that the motor is on for. PWM creates much less heat than using a resistor box, and also uses less power, but creates a lot of electrical noise, which is why it has that honking big inductor and the capacitors.

Using PWM lets them control it more precisely (and digitally, since they feel everything needs to be controlled by a computer nowadays). And particularly, as you mentioned, it'll save some power, too. But when you use low/mediocre-quality Chinese components, it ends up being just as unreliable, if not more so, as the old-fashioned variable resistor method.

Question question questions, what type of problem was fixed in the video? Does this have the same structure including screws, bolts and vice versa as the Prius 04? My problem is the AC sometimes is low and other times it's good, but most of the time it doesn't really reach the back seats.

It's just a pulse configuration. You would need a 4th wire to a speed sensor so it could calculate how to modulate the pulsation.

My 2010 showed a check Hybrid System warning light. It operated normally, charged normally, etc. This happened the day after I had the engine compartment detailed and cleaned by one of those mobile services. I took the vehicle in to a Toyota dealership, this is now day 3, they just called moments ago and said they finally figured it out, they informed me the A/C compressor went out and that the repair cost will total $4,100....REALLY NOW,..holy moly. Anyway, I told them hell no and to put it all back together and I would pick it up since it drove and operated normally. It only has 57K miles on it. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Just curious, does that blower have set speeds, or is it continuously variable. Yes, lots of PWM stuff these days, and they can be a PITA to those not up on them... some of those speed modules cost big bucks. Think they're more revenue boosters than anything, and not all that reliable. Hate that stuff, no need for it. They always remind me of old time Rube Goldburg cartoons. More: Scanner Danner recently put up video on continuously variable radiator fans... and as in his example, some of them are so wired that a failed module can/will leave the fan funning high long as the battery is connected! Who need that? I'm not even fully comfortable with electric fans, let alone the variable ones...

Today my blower wasn't working at all, on none of the speeds. (2007 Prius) It was about -10 degrees Fahrenheit. After driving 30 minutes, it suddenly came on and worked for the remainder of my 2 hr commute. I have never had an issue with my blower motor before. Any idea what could have happened? I would have expected intermittent problems before losing it 100% off and then working perfectly again.

1. It's out of warranty due to miles. 2. That looks like an Ethernet port, but there's nothing behind it. Yet. That won't be available till 2018 or so. Still working out the means of metering the billing. I'm just kidding. It's just shaped like a port. There's nothing there. Good question.

Cannot use resistors anymore in a green car, you can't waste you precious fuel you have saved driving like and Old lady in that Snail. Just imagine dropping a few watts over a series resistor for the blower, that would be a tragedy, even a polar bear would die and bla bla blaaaa prius smoke vending machine. The real green concerned people should have never played the C4C game to start with. But, let the automakers make money !!. Love Toyotas, but I'd stand away of that thing. Nice vid. Cheers.

@@amuroford985 the amount of information I gathered from your previous comment was one of simple observation, and what I observed was the type of behavior that is seen in almost 65-70% of individuals that are considered to be late millennials, or generation Z throughout The United States of America. Examples would consist of young people that go about their day just waiting for any possible chance to go a social justice warrior rant about how this or that offends them, or about how another persons beliefs are hurtful and somehow make you feel like you are in danger or one thing or another to throw a temper tantrum, just hoping that their is another sjw around to give you the confidence to continue your tyrant about the patriarchy and how you are not given the same opportunities as everyone else.
