Toyota Prius Air Compressor Replacement

2009 Toyota Prius Hybrid that needs a compressor. This seems to be a pretty common issue with these cars from what I read online. It really is not a big job as it only calls for 2 hours for the removal and install with 1 hour for the recharge. The biggest factor is that you need to know that this takes ND-11 compressor oil which was $217 from Toyota and that was the only place that had it other than online. So this was not a cheap job with a $700 compress, $217 oil, and then the freon and labor.

Why didn’t you show how you put the Freon in do you connect the bottle to the blue tube with the pump on ???

You connect a can tap to the yellow line and fill it through the gauges on the blue line. I can send you a link to another one of my videos if you would like

Didn't the new compressor come with oil in it?

According to Toyota sale rep he said that the footnotes said it ships with no oil in them and needs to be added

@@operationoverhaul very interesting. Toyota’s service procedure actually says to drain oil from the new compressor. Thanks for sharing your experience. It will help me appropriately price the job. Any chance you can you tell me the entire cost including labor? My dealership just told me it would cost nearly $6,000 to replace my compressor on my 2005 Prius.

I think the full job on this one including parts and labor were between 1500 and 2000 dollars. The factory ac compressor may be a bit higher but still I do not see it being a 4k dollar difference.

Do I need to get rid of freon before replacing the compressor? how and when to add oil thanks

You do need to remove the freon before removing the compressor. A shop can do that for you if you are unable to do so yourself. I typically add the oil into one of the line ports before installing the compressor. Just put the plugs back on the ports when installing so the oil does not drain back out.

but if i add oil before fit new compressor and i vacuum system i will vacuum oil too from the system

It will not vacuum the oil out. The oil will stay in the compressor. But if you are worried about it, there is a kit to inject the oil in with your gauges. Here is a link if you want to check it out: amzn.to/3JRKtyX
