In today’s episode Dr. Becky speaks with Lauren Windle, a recovered cocaine addict, who started using cocaine during her time at University.
Lauren became addicted after a toxic break up at the age of 22 after which she decided she was going to become a 'party girl' and used alcohol and cocaine to numb emotions such as; loneliness and social anxiety. Lauren got clean at the age of 25 after she reached out to her sister and admitted she needed help, this began Lauren’s recovery process.
This is Lauren's story where she discusses what she experienced and what her life looks like now. It is not a therapy session, however, it does cover the Psychological impact of what Lauren experienced. Some people may find the content of this interview distressing.
Dr. Becky Spelman is a top Psychologist in London, Becky is the Clinic Director for Private Therapy Clinic which has clinic's based all around central London including; Harley Street, Wigmore Street, Bank, Earls Court & Canary Wharf. Becky uses Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness to treat a range of difficulties with a particular interest in Borderline Personality Disorder and the difficulties that go with this condition such as relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, low-self esteem, social anxiety, fear of public speaking, fear of intimacy, interpersonal difficulties, anger, body image issues, eating disorders and addictions.

thank you for the video. Her words like "i didn't want to but i had to take it" illustrate how much social pressure there is under this addiction, all she wanted was to be accepted and although went through a horrible road she does realize that this way is an obstacle that ruins lives.

Get rid of all your user friends, delete and block your dealers. Don’t go to places where you know you can score. Fill your time with other things. This is very important don’t have empty time when you usually would be doing blow. Make sure that time is filled with something else. Then when you’re ready try mushrooms. I know that sounds like druggie alternative talk but when your ready mushrooms can begin to rewire your brain and also give you insight into how better to quit. You don’t need to do mushrooms more than once or twice. It’s a long path to get away. It takes time. Relapse it’s part of the process but it’s also not an excuse to stop. Good luck Brandon.

@@User-5amk1m0 hello and thanks for reaching out. You can definitely crack this, and here is what I would do. You need to make some changes. Your girlfriend is your motivation and you are saying right here and now that you want to change. Do not forget that. Stay away from the triggers. Friends and pubs and parties etc that will put you in difficult situations. Try NA. There are meeting’s everywhere and I found them very useful. Can seem a bit weird at first but if it keeps you clean, it’s got to be good. It’s also good to be working towards something as well as running away from something. I would suggest starting the Couch25k and/or joining a gym. New priorities will definitely help. Save the money you would have spent, and watch it mount up. Maybe put it towards a weekend away with your girl. Goals are good. I hope that helps and if I can assist in any way, let me know. Good luck and God bless.

I totally empathise .kudos and good on you for getting out early. Its not a moralistic failing ,the need for anxiety to go away is extremely addictive itself .for some people having anxiety is horrible .It destroys your quality of life ,then we find a substance to self medicate and its bliss at times but never worth it for a second long term . It took me years before i realised why i was self medicating with substances . .a good few years sober myself ,i have PTSD and flashbacks from my carry on and self hatred . These substances are never going away ,its up to governments to think outside the box for solutions ,,the criminal element involved makes the problem far worse. Thank god ive got the rest of my life away from the world of Alcohol and substances . Great interview . Thanks.

Just made a call to a counselor for help myself. Something i wanted to do for a long time, but something made act on it after years of my addiction. It was that or completely crumble. Can relate to a many parts of your experience said here except I spent most my time doing it alone. Best advice I can give to anyone in a similar situation whether it's drugs, drink, gambling, depression or anything is to talk to someone. Anyone you can. I'm only on the start of this journey (35yo) but I've been on this path before in my mid 20s after a breakdown with a gambling addiction which is why I'm acting now before it's too late. I have suffered with trauma, but it just goes to show that this can affect anyone regardless.of trauma. Thank you for sharing this. I believe in myself and feel deeply this is the start of a new path in Ive deeply needed.

@@garethoconnell4894 are you cravings a result of alcohol or do you face temptation throughout your sober everyday life? It alcohol is a contributing factor, you need to realize that the socially accepted drug that is alcohol is the most toxic factor and contributor to your addiction problem. Contrary to popular belief, alcohol is the number one gateway drug. It aids in convincing the mind that bad decisions can be suppressed and that the temporary euphoria of drug use is more important than the Emirates psychological after effects such as anxiety, depression, lack of self worth, and disassociation from the real world. Life is so much better from a Sober, appreciative outlook on the magnificence of the natural world devoid of an impaired, artificial state of mind. Heed me words and appreciate the gift of life and remember that drugs are man made solutions to unexplainable conditions of the human mind. Mindfulness and self healing are possible for any individual strong enough to face the greatest of our existence. This is coming from a non drug user who sympathizes the with power of addition and hopes to aid in the strengthening of the human condition through science and a love and interest of the natural world

Even after talking to friends and family, and feeling those ways about it, I still do it. Almost feels like I'm subconsciously sabotaging myself. Cocaine is a nightmare drug because it's so moorish. Luckily for me it never got out of hand, but because of my moral compass I exaggerated my dilemma, which always made me keep a check on things. I had an habit and was not addicted, but there were times like, this is gonna get a grip if not careful PARANOIA springs to mind. I'm from a council estate in Manchester, 80s was our time weed, e, acid, etc but to us it was just part of life, but coke that's a creeper. Even now I avoid old haunts and people.Keep fit, eat well, read, and own what you've been through, it's a battle but we will win the war.❤️ You're very welcome. ⭐☀️😀👋🏾🙏🏾🎊👍🏾

I just admitted to my sister that I am an addict. I hate this term as there are so many stereotypes associated with it, but I think my resistance to identifying with this label reinforced why it applies to me. At the end of the day, I was using, I was unhappy and I wanted to change but didnt know how. If that makes me an addict, then so be it. This video helped humanize this label. I need help and I am currently looking for help, but dont know how to move forward. If someone can help, that would be great.

I find this so hard to understand. Lost my husband to drugs. Before we got married (5 months) wants divorce had affairs and I’m also pregnant with our second child which is due in 9 days. Very true, there’s a common overlooked problem within household alcohol addiction. Of course men have always lead statistically when it comes to domestic problems with addiction but more recently in America, alcoholism amongst married women has increased 100 percent. Can anyone shed light on what their theory is on why this might be?

Actually I can add that the counsellor is very elegant, but I can't help imagining her living in the Middle Ages perhaps in Hever Castle married to Henry 8th? Or rather as a muse in the ornamental gardens of the castle playing a viola for the pleasure of the king? (This might look like an insult but is in fact some kind of demented compliment). OK I am nuts. My final more relevant edit is that I also had a similar history so I am not just here to make stupid comments

I was lucky... I never got addicted to cocaine. That's the drug that really takes you to the poor house... because there's no ceiling. With heroin... eventually you nod out and fall asleep. You get your fill, so to speak. With cocaine... you're never satisfied. Then there's me... A dumb MF'er that tried and tried cocaine 100 times. Crack, too. I just never experienced this high everyone else speaks of. And I'd be there smoking crack and watching everyone around me ascend in to euphoria... but me... 'Huh, what's so pleasurable about this?' I literally never felt a high off cocaine once... and I used it so many times. I used it because I was a compulsive addict and was desperately LOOKING for something pleasurable. I was a heroin addict for 10 years. Loved that. But eventually heroin gets really boring. The 'high' isn't even an issue eventually... you just need it to stop withdrawals. It's not how fun or good heroin is.. it's how bad it is when you DON'T have it. But with cocaine, luckily there's no physical withdrawal or dependence... and luckily for me.... there wasn't even any mental dependence because I never could feel any 'high' from cocaine. And I always got great quality coke, too. My gf would love it. My friends would love it. But I never felt a 'high' from cocaine. And thank god. Because I never went broke thanks to that. I only did it here and there when others had it. I never spent a dime on it. For some reason, my brain and my body's receptors just never reacted to cocaine. It always did nothing to me. Nothing bad, nothing good. I never could feel cocaine. I wish I knew the science behind why my brain was immune to cocaine. It's interesting. And it saved my life. Everyone I used cocaine with eventually succumbed to it... and went broke for a bit... except me. Because cocaine addiction is like burning your money. It's the habit that breaks you, financially speaking. So I thank my lucky stars, that for whatever reason, I never felt a cocaine 'high'. I mean I'd feel a boost of energy. Sure. But pleasure or euphoria... I never felt even the slightest bit of that from cocaine. And I tried well over 100 times... 50 of them smoking crack.

@@sharynjohnston530 Never took them. I'm lucky I never needed them. But I wouldn't take them even if I did need them. The overwhelming majority of people that are convinced to take them and get on those shit pills.... they aren't depressed for any 'chemical imbalance'. They're depressed.... because their lives suck. There are very good reasons they're depressed. It's healthy, actually. Because it's the body screaming from within.... this sucks, you need to make changes... For instance, just being single is shit. You meet someone amazing... you're dancing. Because being alone sucks. Of course anyone would eventually be sad as hell alone. Same with career/job/money/friends etc. If these things are crappy.... who the hell wouldn't be depressed? Everyone would be. You'd be a nut if you were happy with a lousy or just unfulfilled life. So...... That's why I'd never take anti-depressants. And I think they're way over prescribed. Sure, some need them. But tens of millions of scripts in the USA annually is just absurd. But to each his own. That was a ramble. Sorry. Nm.

You sound like a highly motivated person naturally. You suffered from FOMO. You're in fact the lucky few who doesn't have physical addiction but obviously it's psychological. I think you may need to look at your circle, who are the people you're trying to keep up with? What is this high and why? What you're running from. Maybe sitting in the feeling, there really isn't anything you can take extrinsically and it is inside you
