4 Reasons why I haven't been wearing a bindi

Get the most practical guide to starting your journey in Hinduism! The New Hindu Toolbox smile.amazon.com/New-Hindu-To...
When you convert to Judaism, there are classes. Same with Catholicism. In fact, most religions have a course to get you started. With Hinduism, you just have to muddle through yourself. You'll hear the vague "There are no converts to Hinduism" (which can mean either that the person considers you to already be Hindu if you're living a Hindu life or that you can't be no matter what you do).
But that's not true. A large segment of Americans began practicing Hinduism in the 1960s and 70s. Areas around India such as Bali have native Hindu populations that had to have been converted at some point.
This booklet is here to hold your hand through the process of beginning your Hindu life. If you don't know where to get started, this booklet will guide you. If you have questions that a native Hindu has never experienced, you may find answers here.
The first part is an easy six-week guide to easing you into a local Hindu community and the second part is FAQs that converts have.
Who am I to write this guide? I am a non-Indian, American Hindu. I began identifying as a Hindu in 2004 and I've run a blog about the experience of being a non-Indian Hindu since 2009.
The Table of Contents for this booklet is as follows:
Easing In
Week One: A trip to the bookstore
Week Two: Bringing the Gods Home
Week Three: Learning to Pray
Week Four: Make Friends
Week Five: Enjoy a Festival
Week Six: Going to the temple

Cultural Tidbits
Forehead Marks: Bindi and Tilak

If you feel too self conscious and not comfortable to wear all these, it totally makes sense. Also having to also explain why you wear these to people, being the centre of attention, having people staring at you can be exhausting. If someone asks you, just say that im a hindu and it symbolises my faith, thats it. No need to go in details. Its great that you are posting regularly.

So nice to hear other people talk about these issues. I am a white person that wears bindi and also that has a Sanskrit name and often wears Indian clothing styles. Of course the kumkum powder has spiritual properties that are important for me and I wear it whether or not anyone sees me. BUT I do wear the bindi specifically because I want to show solidarity with my Hindu siblings with racialized features that can't step out of their skin. Especially with all the hate and attacks that are happening. Now is not the time to hide. Hinduism is beautiful and I am not afraid.

Hello, i was the one asking about bindi, sindoor and mangalsutra. ive been following you since your early videos where you used to wear it so thats why i found it weird that you just stopped wearing all these. I didnt mean to offend you, i was just curious. Its totally up to you to wear these symbols or not, in hinduism nobody is forced to do anything they dont want to. Knowing what all these symbolise might bring back your confidence to wear it. The bindi(Made of turmeric and other natural stuffs, not the chemical one) helps to detoxify the pineal gland and activate the third eye(ajna chakra). It helps to remove fluorine from the pineal gland. It helps to improve focus/concentration and helps to regulate blood pressure. It is also said to attract positive energy, etc... The sindoor isnt just a mere symbol of marriage, it symbolises the divine feminine energy. It helps to activate the crown chakra,etc... The mangalsutra symbols the oneness of the relationship between the husband and wife. The gold beard represent parvati and the wife also and attracts positive energy and black beard represent shiva and husband and it destroys negative energy.

I am so happy you made this video. I was the one who asked you about the bindi on your last video in comment. Again i was just curious I didnt mean to be rude. I totally understand. Sanatan Dharma sets you free and not force things on someone...its fine if you dont wear a bindi that doesnt define you as a hindu.

It's part of your faith though. You don't have to worry about that, and if anyone asks, just say "it's for religious reasons" and if anyone else has something to say, just walk away.

I’m on the spectrum too so I totally understand the obsessions coming and going. Sometimes it’s very frustrating. I’m a little disheartened about wearing a bindi, I won’t lie. I want to wear one so badly due to loving Hinduism so much, but I don’t want to ruffle feathers. But not wearing one also makes me feel bad. So I am right there with you (I am a white westerner but I look very white and have light brown/blonde hair)

There are multiple festivals every single day of the year. 21) You are a working person. Don't have time for religion. Its okay. You will still be a Hindu. 22) You like to go to temples. Devotion is loved. 23) You don't like to go to temples - no problem. You are still a Hindu! 24) You know that Hinduism ☺ is a way of life, with considerable freedom. 25) You believe that everything has God in it. So you worship your mother, father, guru, tree, River, Prani-matra, Earth, Universe! 26) And If you don't believe that everything has GOD in it - No problems. Respect your viewpoint. 27) "Sarve jana sukhino bhavantu " (May you all live happily) You represent this! You're free to choose, my dear Hindu! This is exactly the essence of Hinduism, all inclusive .. That is why it has withstood the test of time inspite of repeated onslaught both from within and outside, and assimilated every good aspects from everything . That is why it is eternal !!! There is a saying in Rigveda , the first book ever known to mankind which depicts the Hinduism philosophy in a Nutshell -" Ano bhadrah Krathavo Yanthu Vishwathah"- Let the knowledge come to us from every direction.

A plastic isn't important, but the tilak is important for a hindu, isn't obligatory but it is important. If Indian women don't do it, isn't our problem. I know a lot indians don't even know good a large mantra, or any hindu shastras but their title. We should not take a nacionality as an example.

I want to also add that when I’m on the waning slope of my obsessions I get very plain and don’t do much of anything so I also tend to not wear anything specific. Doing otherwise feels insincere. Being on the spectrum is hard.

Wearing a bindi is a cultural practice and not a Vedic religious practice. What is more important is to wear tilak (for Vaishnavas) or tripundra (for Shaivites and shaktas) at least when performing sacred functions or when representing Hinduism in some way.

You don't need to answer anyones questions about it. Why do you wear the bindi? Because you like to. Your idea of privilege is misguided. Nobody will be looking at an Indian person as if they are "wierd", for wearing indian clothes. Youre the one thats in a challenging position because people may look at you as if you are being racist for so caled "cultural appropriation", which I think is so wrong. We should all live authentically. If a white person wants to be Hindu, then they should be allowed to, with no judgement. I found your channel because I am a white girl that loves hinduism. .

Hey there .. feel free to correct me .. maybe you don’t mean it that way may be your words came off wrong. you “wear” and “use” Hinduism as per your needs, obsession and convenience and you call it privilege !! mam .. a person not of that culture wearing somebody’s traditional clothes and “Hinduism” because they are obsessed with and then have the “option” to remove it whilst a native of that heritage lives with racism and discrimination their whole life for their skin color & religious practices .. is not called privilege but cultural appropriation and insensitivity. as of now & this year, at least 7-8 Indians have been killed in USA for their skin color and religion. But you have the liberty to “wear” Hinduism and “remove” it, come off as non-Hindu and never face such consequences but mam I cannot remove my brown skin, keep on shelf and do the same. I cannot choose to be of my religion today and not be that tom because we do not “wear” religion we “practice” religion. Our culture, heritage and religion is not just some periods of obsession for us. We have to learn to accept appreciate & embrace ourselves with the ongoing slew of racism & discrimination. Bindi for us is not “bejeweled forehead” or “fashion statement” rather its entrenched deeply in our cultural aspects .. from our god-goddesses to indigenous & tribal communities of India. I don’t mean to be rude, just keeping another perspective, I’m writing it all with respect. Wish you a good day … Namaskaram 🙏

My religion is an intregal part of who I am. Hinduism is the core of my being. I will never be and could not ever be not Hindu. I don't know quite how to reconcile that I have advantages from not always being percieved as Hindu. I wrestle with that every day. Wearing a bindi is not a fashion statement for me at all, but a way to indicate that I stand with my Hindu brothers and sisters and do my best not to use my light skin as an advantage. I am not obsessed with it or wearing it for a time, it is my life and it has been forever. I was born and raised in a family that practiced Hindu philosophy.

@@thewhitehindu Hey. Apologies if I sounded aggressive with my comment, I did not mean to. This one will be bit longer, I want to give context for misunderstanding your words. Firstly, appreciate you for responding respectfully rather than getting offended because some social media people delete Indian comments when we keep our views on their white platform when it does not align with their insensitive mindset towards other ethnicities. I respect your views and your beliefs. I stand with you when you talk about solidarity. But you must have seen on social media platforms how loosely solidarity word is being thrown around and how people not of south Asian decent are using it to define their blatant disrespect and appropriation of Indian heritage and religions. Indian heritage is rich and complex yet it had been reduced into global to-do ‘desi aesthetic’ trend by white influencers. These people wear sari, Bindi, suit and mimic how ‘desi people’ act without understanding what they are doing is cosplaying observations of racist stereotypes of Indians that they have never lived / experienced and are presenting it to the world. when Indians make such videos it’s to express ‘how it felt’ and never ‘how we act’ - that’s the difference. These white influencers are normalizing ‘cosplaying’ Indians globally that my heritage has been reduced to mockery. This leads to other people viewing it as such, they see views and engagement and they start doing it. WHEN DID MY ETHNICITY BECAME A TREND or JOB? how is this acceptable or even humorous? There are white youtubers who are making videos validating Indian culture appropriation by western celebrities while themselves wearing Indian clothes and religions aspects and are actively deleting Indian comments when we keep our concerns. They make Indian heritage available to the world in wrong manners without the inclusion of us people of heritage. And then these people go ‘we gate keep our culture’. We shared our teachings and see how they have exploited yoga & mediation. They have made spiritualism into some bohemian aesthetic. Western - European world is literally claiming Indian heritage be it clothes, jewelry and religious aspects, our teachings w.r.t health, skin - hair care [naming just a few] as theirs, changing the names, white-washing it, representing it as some original exotic accessory & monetizing it. POC are not favored by algorithm, all the world sees is this white person cosplaying Indians, using our traditional clothes as costumes, them wearing saree and giving history lessons, trying to be our ‘voice’ or ‘savior’ and explaining Indian culture when we have been talking about it since ages but since a white person is doing it, it’s making all sense. These influencers take so much from Indian heritage, they have reduced my ethnicity to their social media ‘desi aesthetics’. This blurs the line between appropriation and appreciation. That is why I misunderstood you as white-coating religious & cultural aspects that has Indian origins. There are people who say ‘culture appropriation is BS and wear whatever you want’, to them I want to ask “to your white skin every other religion and ethnicity is ‘available’ as ‘options’.. pick-choose-wear-use-remove-keep on shelf-walk away, all from the comfort of your place, with never lived experience and zero consequences. Its all fun and games - costume aesthetics for you but for us natives of the heritage this equation does not even exist. We are born into it and we live with it and everything that comes alongside; good & bad … so how is this fair?” My ethnicity is not anybody’s cosplay, my culture is not an aesthetic, my heritage is not for these influencers to treat as fashion statement props for views. my religion is not a fashion accessory, my country is not some exotic Bollywood concept for white platform. My ethnicity is not their cash source. I am not a concept. MY ETHICITY IS NOT A THEME. If you want to talk about it on your platform, you can use this comment. Don’t feel burdened though only do if you are comfortable because social media is rough terrain. I just want to have an Indians perspective on how much its hurts to see my Indian heritage be mocked globally. Also, I know this does not define everyone because I have myself met some amazing people from other countries genuinely enjoying & experiencing our culture. We are NOT against SHARING & EXPERIENCING but “STEALING & EXPLOITING”. Wish you a good day. Namaskaram🙏.
