First and the most important thing you need to know when you move from dj controller to the turntables is that you dont need to move from dj controller to the turntables

Its like riding a bike with stabilizers then having to remove them. If you have a BPM counter in view its basically playing air guitar unless you are scratching beat juggling and incorporating a whole range of tricks into your set. Straight mixing you may as well stare at paint drying until you press a button to que in the next record. I've tried both and found BPM counting machines boring as hell. If I was learning on BPM counting machines I'd give up on DJing in a year because there's no challenge once you learn the timings/math of how two records go together and EQing. Once you "master" that you just stand there looking dumb. Thats why so many DJs on feel like they have to put on a show by going nuts on the EQ as if they are creating the song on the mixer, faking the EQ twists because you cannot hear it, and dancing, posing behind the decks. They have plenty of time to practice throwing love hearts with their hands.

For me, at least, it is very easy to mix on both controllers and turntables, simply because I keep them in their native domain. If I choose to mix on controller I mix on digital domain and if I choose to mix on turntables I keep it all in analog domain. A turntable it is what it is, an analog and imperfect playback equipment, but the beauty of mixing on turntables comes from the simplicity of the mix. I don't have to do something fancy or complicated to keep the mix going. Just choose my tracks carefully, know them very well and do not "touch" them too much during the mix.

I had a challenging experience this past weekend using a turntable controller for only the second time at a gig and had to learn a few of these lessons on the go, but your vid really explains these things and even brings up other points too. Thankful honestly. !

Gr8 run down, I learned on 1200’s so while the things missing totally make sense, the main one missing from all CDJs and most controllers, is any sense of a tactile spinning platter and as a result analog style mixing. This is what you get with the turntable and this can be the biggest factor in what you enjoy about mixing. Certainly is for me. Also gives you something to do (Mix) if your not feeling the button life. Anyway, that’s the thing you didn’t really hit on (you definitely highlight some issues) in terms of someone deciding why they might really enjoy turntables. Like all those anomalies can make mixing fun, cause you actually have something to do. Keep it poppin’ friend.

Great video! you did forgot one point tho, Turntable users like myself will need to,eventually buy extra neddles plus keep cleaning them to keep the timecode signal clean! When i bought my turntables i had no clue what was waiting for me ..... then the smartest thing i did was to switch to Phase! For sure, turntables are so much fun and it feels much better than using CDJs! Great points overall! thanks for the video

This seems to be a comparison between a CDJ controller and a Vinyl controller. It would be interesting to compare controller vs analog vinyl. Vinyl had issues such as warped vinyl, convex or concave warping, loose or tight centers, thin vinyl, thick vinyl, cue burns, scratched surface, drifting bpms because of manual edits. All this actually helped develop a lot of nuance skill for old school vinyl DJs.

Man such a great video. I am using Rane 12 and a Rane 72 from a DDJ 1000 Srt and I thought there was something wrong with my tables because of the drift!

Turntable advocate chiming in... One thing you gain with turntables and lose with CDJs/controller is the ability to beat juggle using record rotation. IMO beat juggling on a static wheel device (CDJ/controller) is inferior. Great video as always tho! 👍

I we t from turntables to Rane 12/Cdj cause I need moving platters. The biggest downside to TT is the wow and flutter, if you use DVS you’ll have to deal with dust and needles, if you go with phase you have to charge, trust the hardware and it’s more to deal with. The rane 12 is the perfect unit if you want to feel turntables but want precision.

In regards to number 6, the screen and info lags but the audio stays real time. So it’s the analog equivalent of using your ear with a real record. Just can’t 100% rely on your eyes when matching with vinyl in this case.

My vestax PDX 2000s have brakes and can stop as fast as a controller! The only thing that I think you’ve got wrong.I’ve checked this out with my vestax CD-R put as a controller on . But good advice for people who have never used records before or timecode.

Yo man I’ve been playing with turntables for a little over 2 years now and I’ve used a controller a few times but for me it’s just too much going on at once in my face. With vinyl it’s more straightforward, you put the record on and match the snares then mix in. With a controller I get lost in the screen. Got a lot of respect for those controller djs but I would 10 times over prefer vinyl. You hear raw technique and talent rather than a machine doing all the hard work… most of the time

I just bought the reloop rp 8000 mk2 and found out no mater what slipmat I use the vinyl still doesn't want to stop spinning without slowing down the plater!

I wonder what turntable or cdj has the least amount of latency or if it even matters if you switch anti drift on for beat juggling & scratching. But still curious I want to run some experiments with multiple different setups

Does the controller (for example a XDJ XZ or DDJ 1000) show the BPM of the turntable on the controller itself?

I’ve been using vinyl & turntables for 20 years, never used digital. I’m not a purist though, I just can’t afford to go digital (yet). I’m not sure I’d consider it an upgrade going from a controller or cdj’s to turntables though. I mean turntables might look or “feel” more professional, but they’re actually quite basic & limited technology in this day & age… also just look what can be done on controllers. Hot cues, samples, rolls, pad fx etc! I’d love to have a go them some time 👍

Can you tell me, is this a trick for when your cue lines up you still have sound behind it intentionally or is this to give you the sticker offset for lining up at the play head vs 12 o’clock?

I have been thinking of changing my controller for a pair of rane twelve mkII with a Pioneer S7 mixer which from what I have read is almost the same as using a controller but in the form of turntables I don't know what opinion you can give me about that configuration will it be good or not? Use a proper Technics SL1200 MK2 original setup with no digital assistants and non digital Serato/Traktor etc. turntables. That would be interesting just using your ears instead of just looking at a screen on the mixer (albeit I think you are showing the difference for younger generations)

Another point to mention is the timecode vinyls have an audible high pitched sound to them that can be heard when playing at low volume or with the volume completely lowered. This is due to the actual needle in the groove of the vinyl physically picking up the sound of the timecode signal. This phenomenon also happens with regular vinyl however it is less noticeable as the sound the needle would pick up on regular vinyl would match the music coming from your speakers as opposed to the timecode signal being a continuous high pitched hum that is distinctly different to whatever music would be playing along with it. Using phase would be an option to eliminate this issue but using traditional needles it’s unavoidable. At normal mixing volumes the issue is not really a problem as only noticeable when mixing or listening to tunes at low volumes but still a “feature” of timecode vinyl that should be considered.
