I taught myself to mix via the crossfader, so I decided to use this demonstration and practice; it is much better using the faders. The crossfader is usually for scratching and cutting. Well explained.

Funny as the crossfader was meant for that exact reason back in the day when uising turntables. It was a bit more full on back then so you could then mix just with one hand and use the mic in the other or use your othe hand to contoll the deck ect. Totaly different to todays purpose as time has eveolved mixers entirely. Great vid :)

Very true. The original DJ mixer from Boxak didn’t have a crossfader, or even channel faders. It had rotary knobs for the channels and that was it. The era of the popularity of crossfaders I would say was in the 1980s to the mid 1990s. But the channel fader/knobs for mixing were actually the original way to mix back in the 1970s. (Though the crossfader was also introduced in the mid 1970s)

i use the cross fader and whlie in doing that my free hand is doing the EQ.On some tracks i might chop back and forth but i have always used the cross fader as it gave me one free hand and when using vinyl that meant i could pitch bend the deck coming in making small adjustments especially on older track with irregular beats .Having a free hand to use eq effects scratch pitch bend etc is why we have cross faders.Lazy mixing just from one to the other with the cross fader i understand is not so great but i have always mixed with the cross fader and the up faders left where they are so i can do more with my free hand.

NICE BUT I’LL ALWAYS BE A CROSSFADER GUY! Back when us old schoolers learned to mix, we learned to drop that beat at the beginning of the mix or at least the first snare after the the first bass note. It sounded better and still does to me. It had that feel to where you didn’t know if it was the same Song or not. The whole gradually raising the track on the channel fader sounds weak to me and in most cases you can tell when it’s coming in. Like a scared attempt to drop it on the one. But that’s just my take. Oh, AND you can still transform the sound with the up-channels. You don’t really need a sharp fader.

I was thinking the same, they call beginners, when actually you need more practice to master the crossfader use, the crossfader range volume goes all the way up from one side to the other not just from the middle, so the range is wider than most DJ think, also when you are using the volume channels you are not leveling correctly, I don't see the DJ's using the master either correctly, but it is true that in newer consoles the crossfader is shorter so this lead us to change our mixing style a lil bit.

When i started DJing back in 2008 the crossfaders were a lot wider and I got used to that workflow. Time and tech has changed and I now love the channel fader mix instead. Also with a 4 channel mixer this really makes even more sense

This might be use useful, because i have a Denon Prime 4 controller. Though i LOVE it, it can be pretty frustrating/confusing used to workflow of using 4 channels in two decks, getting the most out of it. I make alot of mistakes when cueing and such while practicing, mistakes that i definitely don't want to make when playing out. Using channel faders may simplify things. Will give it a try.

Phil is a great guy. He actually asked me about specific features he wanted to use with the CDJ-3000 that it worked out better for him to use the DJM-900NXS2. Those features were Touch Cue and Touch Preview which utilize the Pro DJ Link. It really depends what you’re preferences are for the mixer and configuration you want. I like using the DJM-V10, DJM-S11, and DJM-S7 with it.

If you are looking to learn how to mix with channel faders, I'd recommend turning off the crossfader when you start. Having it on may only complicate things when you're trying to learn a new skill. You can always turn it back on when you're ready for more advanced stuff.

On paper the crossfader is the best method; hand free to make any adjustments, perfectly balanced mix level as long as the Ch faders are set correctly (for dipped or dipless /some at halfway some about 3/4s). & Easily replaced after heavy use. I use the channel faders as I do long blends & you can also shut & open them quickly if you choose. But beginners I can understand crossfader use as they might need to make more corrections using the free hand. I started on an old Kam mixer with no trims/gains. VU level was set with upfaders, could only mix with crossfader (unless you remembered where to bring the up fader to). We used both back in the day. Upfaders would crackle after time so used the crossfader & vice versa. Even xfaders were not as easy to get no online like today, so you would use either until a spare came.

Also the crossfader can be used as a lock precisely to prevent errors while mixing, it is just up to the style or whatever you are doing, sometimes there's no intro or outro or you are dealing with a radio edit so in that case you need looping cutting and playing with the eqs to make the mix interesting and you need both channels vol faders to be equal and just using the crossfader

That was an amazingly helpful video my friend, good stuff homeslice... I think you literally just upped my game with mixing and scratching on a technical point of view, and on a game changing point of view! This is one of the best videos, and one of the most important things I've learned to date when it comes to mixing for myself at least. I've been practicing my scratching on my portable turntables, my regular turntable, and my Denon motorized media player as well. But for some reason I love scratching on my portables, like personally myself. But when I want to mix and scratch, I'll use my Audio Technica atlp140 XP with my Pioneer DJ djm250 MK2. But I'm really not super impressed with the Magvel fader honestly my friend, which is weird, because there was a lot of hype behind the Magvel fader🔥💯👍💪🙏🎶🌎 I think as soon as I'm able to put an innovator in my Pioneer djm250mk2 mixer hopefully sometime in the near future, I'm thinking that should really up my game when it comes to me doing the whole mixing and scratching scenario. I've spent the later half of the last year basically collecting 12-in vinyl, and 7-in vinyl for scratching, with an occasional 7-in vinyl or 45s for music, as well too! But as soon as I'm able to get that Innofader put inside of my mixer, and then practice my scratching and mixing with the technique that you just laid out for me. I think I'll start the dominate on this bitch! Lol... Bahahahaha... Lol .. Just messn around man, but yeah bro, that was an extremely helpful video, and I can't wait to utilize those scratch techniques once I get a better fader, thank you again for your help with the DJ shit.... Keep it rockn 👍💪🙏🎶🌎🔥💯☠️💀🛸👽👾😎🔙

I remember set it and forget it was our concept and saying for finding the pitch precisely and then dropping the mix and let it ride. Nowadays, DJs are chasing the mix the whole way through. If you can catch a beat, you shouldn’t have to be chasing the beat while in the mix and if you do, it should be very minimal. Man! And this was done back in the day with just vinyl and waiting for that break beat

(Also, I’m sure that you don’t think your Japanese caricature video isn’t racist…I mean you are speaking Japanese right? It doesn’t matter that you are white! It isn’t racist if you have good pronunciation!) I guess it depends if you want to rock the record or just mix/blend..If you're just miixing/blending,then you're probably better off with the rotary mixers..If you're skilled your can bring the fader over with whatever curves..if you fader is moving to the beat,the mixer is cheap/broken..
@priyonjoni

Cheaper mixers typically have more friction. Professional scratch mixers with tension control have such little friction at low tension; that they can in fact move. That is because scratch DJs prefer less friction.

@@priyonjoni That's makes no sense logically,and I have a Rane with a fader. It's one of the REAL Ranes before they got bought out/merged,or whatever mess they made.Despite the bass,the faders do not move by themselves.If there's that much vibration the records would skip before the faders move themselves.Anyone with audio skills knows to isolate both the decks and the mixer by decoupling them from bass vibrations.I skate and have bearings which have little friction yet the wheels do not roll by themselves without lateral movement.
