I'm a '90s punk kids too and I'm definitely not in the scene anymore, but I've brought my kids to plenty of shows, and it's changed a lot. Metal has gotten even more exclusionary over time, but some of the edges of the punk scene have softened while other parts have sharpened or hardened. Just wanted to share my experience from the Seattle area scene.

Hmmmm, you should probably watch The Decline of Western Civilization. The early LA punk scene was just as bad or worse. They had an entire crew dedicated to beating up "posers" and specifically targeted dudes with long hair, they did the exact same shit. Violence and rape were VERY common back then in the scene. Look up the Suicidal Cycos gang. Maybe where you're from it was different or you came along after things got toned down, but in all the big scenes like LA and NY it was definitely NOT all lovey-dovey and acceptance. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the fact you've had nothing but positive experiences, but your comment is coming from a very...uninformed point of view when you consider the scene on a larger scale than your own personal experience.

So Fear, with their homophobic songs (I'm not familiar with the band), that was acceptable because of the times, but not Skrewdriver? Or Sex Pistols (along with many like Motorhead(Lemme was friends with ISD btw)) they can wear swastikas because they're just "being annoying." Right. The hypocrisy is deep. Good call on that Good Charlotte induction, the most mainstream/attention seeking band outside of Avril Livegne in the early to mid 2000s. But, she's probably on the wall next to them.

The point I always bring up when people start to gatekeep punk rock is this: Before the music industry and radio stations wanted to make it more commercially viable and distance themselves from the "punk stigma" by relabeling some of it as "New Wave", bands like Blondie and The Talking Heads were considered punk bands. Punk rock in its infancy didn't have a specific "sound" or a "look", and was much more diverse and inclusive than it became after that initial first wave of bands. Yes, there were bands like The Clash, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, The Dead Boys, etc., but they weren't solely what punk rock was, and when people try to say "x" band isn't punk rock based on some arbitrary criteria that wasn't even present when punk rock was arguably at its commercial peak, I point them back to the history of punk rock itself.

I wouldn't frame it so much as "You can't cancel bands for what their views were when it was somewhat acceptable" so much as "If they aren't truly hateful and grew past it" kind of deal. Remember, in their early years a lot of these bands were 14, 15. 16 year old dudes and gals. Idk about you all, but I said and did some pretty shitty things at that age that I've regretted for a very long time.

Right wingers are trying their best to cancel everything under the sun, wouldn't surprise me if they try to cancel punk all together because it is "non-conformist" which is what they hate the most....

He meant retroactively, its in the context of his statement. If people do fked up stuff now you can stop support and shun but if you get into an old band you cant hold them to today’s standards

Uhhh, did you not hear him? He does cancel bands he doesn’t agree with. The part how it was a “private company” and he can do what he wants. Totally ignoring a large part of the punk culture in 80’s + and acting like it didn’t exist. Doesn’t sound like something a “museum” should do.

I agree with him on skrewdriver, thing is the most public former member is mark radcliffe is a British national treasure quit the band due to their politics later went to work for factory records and radio one. I applaud the guy because he actually became one of the most ardent anti nazi's in the uk punk scene worked with bands like chumbawumba(worked with), Magazine (worked with), cardiacs (worked with) and white town(championed them on his radio show) etc. apparently it was really heavy for him because the boneheads used to send him death threats for years etc.

I used to be a gatekeeper of music, and then I realized good music is good music. Nowadays, people are considering bad religion and NOFX "pop punk." People called The Clash punk...in my opinion they were WAY more than punk( if even punk at all aside from their views and "style." From what I've gathered punk, it's a modified version of what Spicoli said "Well Stu I'll tell you, being "punk" is not a sport, it's a way of life, it's no hobby. It's a way of looking at life and saying, "Hey bud, let's party!"

I LOVED the song First Call at a certain time in my life that i can't really speak all that much about, other than I was doing a lot of cocaine and spending weekday mornings at the bar with crusty bastards watching the price is right. One could argue that that was both the lowest or highest time of my life depending on how much you weigh nihilistic hedonism. I haven't done drugs in years and would absolutely not do that now, but there's a part of me that's glad i did it. You only appreciate the boring life of a square if you've lived the alternative.

@@MikeP2055 hell yeah brother. I'll never forget the times of coming down from the cocaine high while chilling with ol' Gus and the boys at 9am at the dive bar watching Drew Carey. At the end of the day I think the line should’ve been drawn at it’s a private museum and we can put whoever we want in there. Don’t get me wrong, I understand and actually agree with everything he said lol. But it does feel like cherry picking and trying to justify the decisions to take some bands but deny others makes it worse because it never really cleared anything up, at least to me. I should preface though, I have no idea who screwdriver is or what they did. So with that said, yes but no. Mad respect tho. Love fat Mike.
